the salvations of his countenance, according to Aquila. For having become, as it were, in the tent of God, and carried up by holy angels because of its height and its heavenly loftiness, I will stand before the face of God, and I will attain the sight of his salvation; having been deemed worthy of these things, in due time I will offer up the confession and the thanksgiving owed to him. 23.376 These spoken words are what is laid up for me in hope. Meanwhile, in the present, though many things disturbed me, I myself was not so disturbed as to fall away and become manifest to those who disturb me; but just as above, I poured out my soul upon myself, so also here my soul was troubled within me. And according to Symmachus, he says, My soul melts within me when I remember you from the land of Jordan and from Hermoniim, a very small mountain. Deep calls to deep at the sound of your waterfalls. And the meaning of what has been said seems to me to have this sense: After the death of Moses, when Jesus led the people into the promised land, as the priests stepped into the Jordan carrying the ark on their shoulders. And the Jordan, as the Scripture says, was overflowing all its banks, as in the days of the wheat harvest. And the waters coming down from above stood as one heap. And that which came down descended into the sea of salt. And all the sons of Israel crossed over on dry land in the middle of the Jordan, the stream flowing down going into the salt sea; while that which came down from above was miraculously held back by the power of God and went backwards. And so the streams of the Jordan pouring forth from the springs above, having no outlet, swelled up, and became one heap of waters rising up against each other, because their outlet was closed off to them. Then indeed deep called to deep, as the waters were held back and crested. Recalling therefore in memory the grace of the visitation that happened then to the people, it is with reason that in the present I melt away in my soul, since no such providence of God is happening among us. For they miraculously crossed the Jordan and the mountain by it, called Hermoniim, being very small; but upon me who says these things, nothing of the sort has been done; But all your breakers and your waves have passed over me; or according to Symmachus: All your storms and your waves have passed over me. Therefore my soul was rightly troubled within me; or, My soul melts within me when I remember you from the land of Jordan, according to Symmachus, and from Hermoniim, a very small mountain. For in these places long ago deep called to deep at the sound of your waterfalls, as the water was held back so as not to trouble those crossing the Jordan. But then these things happened because of the providence that watched over those at that time; but now all your storms and your waves have passed over me, overwhelming and drowning me, with no one holding them back. The choir of the sons of Kore says these things with reason, prophetically lamenting the final rejection of the nation of the Jews, whose sufferings it was taking upon itself. By day the Lord will command his mercy, and by night his song. Even if, he says, all your storms and your waves have passed over me, yet I know well and am firmly persuaded that there is no time in which you are not merciful; for you are a merciful God, 23.377 yes, and compassionate and long-suffering. Therefore, healing myself with good hopes, knowing that God commands his mercy daily, I continue to spend my nights occupied with his song. For during the day, seeing the deeds of men and the calamities that surround us, both your breakers and your waves, I lament within myself; but being free through the night from the things that trouble me by day,
