not in day or night, not in food or drink, nor even in sleep or on a journey or in a change of place, but just as when living, so also when dead, or rather, more clearly, the soul is with Him completely and eternally. For how shall the bride be separated from the bridegroom, or the husband from the wife to whom he has once been joined? Will the Lawgiver, tell me, not keep the law? He who said, "And the two shall be one flesh," (213) how shall He not become altogether one spirit with her? For the woman is in the man, and the man in the woman, and the soul in God and God in the soul is united and made known in all the saints. Thus are united to God those who through repentance purify their souls in this world, and they become monks, being apart from others, who receive the mind of Christ, which is also a mouth and a truly unfailing tongue, with which they converse with the Father Almighty, with which they ever cry out: "O Father, O all-sovereign King, O Creator of all things!" Of these the cell is heaven, and they are the sun, and the light is in them, the unsetting and divine, which enlightens every man coming into the world and born of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, there is no night in them; how to tell you, I do not know, for I shudder writing these things to you and tremble thinking of them, but I teach you how and in what manner live those who serve God and have loved Him alone instead of all things, and have been united to the Only One and have become monks as alone with the Alone, even if they are encompassed by a vast crowd. For these are truly monks and solitary ones, naked of both meditations and all kinds of thoughts, seeing God alone in a thought-free mind, fixed in light, like an arrow in a wall, or as a star in heaven, or how to say it I do not know. Nevertheless, they inhabit their cells as another luminous bridal chamber and they think they are living in heaven, or rather they truly are living there, see that you do not disbelieve! (214) For they are not upon the earth, even if they are held by the earth, but they live in the light of the age to come, in which angels dwell, upon which they walk, by which principalities and powers are carried away, all thrones and dominions are empowered. For even if God rests in the saints, yet in God the saints live and move, walking in the light as if on solid ground. O wonder, as angels and as sons of the Most High they will be after death, gods co-existing with God, those made like by grace to Him who is God by nature.

οὐκ ἐν ἡμέρᾳ ἤ νυκτί, οὐκ ἐν τροφῇ ἤ πόσει, ἀλλ᾿ οὐδ᾿ ἐν ὕπνῳ ἤ ὁδῷ ἤ μεταβάσει τόπου, ἀλλ᾿ ὥσπερ ζῶν οὕτω θανών, μᾶλλον δέ τρανοτέρως ὅλως ἐκείνῳ σύνεστι τῇ ψυχῇ αἰωνίως. Πῶς γάρ καί χωρισθήσεται ἡ νύμφη τοῦ νυμφίου, ἤ ὁ ἀνήρ τῆς γυναικός, ᾗ συνηρμόσθη ἅπαξ; Ὁ νομοθέντης, λέγε μοι, τόν νόμον οὐ φυλάξει; Ὁ εἰρηκώς˙ Καί ἔσονται οἱ δύο εἰς μίαν σάρκα, (213) πῶς οὐ γενήσεται αὐτός σύν αὐτῇ πνεῦμα ὅλως; Ἐν τῷ ἀνδρί γάρ ἡ γυνή, ἐν γυναικί ἀνήρ δέ, καί ἡ ψυχή ἐν τῷ Θεῷ καί Θεός ἐν ψυχῇ δέ ἑνοῦται καί γνωρίζεται ἐν τοῖς ἁγίοις πᾶσιν. Οὕτως ἑνοῦνται τῷ Θεῷ οἱ διά μετανοίας τάς ἑαυτῶν καθαίροντες ψυχάς ἐν κόσμῳ τῷδε, καί μοναχοί καθίστανται τῶν ἄλλων ὄντες δίχα, οἵ νοῦν Χριστοῦ λαμβάνουσιν, ὅπερ καί στόμα ἔστι καί γλῶσσα ὄντως ἀψευδής, μεθ᾿ ἧς προσομιλοῦσι Πατρί τῷ παντοκράτορι, μεθ᾿ ἧς ἀεί βοῶσιν˙ Ὦ πάτερ, ὦ παμβασιλεῦ, ὦ κτίστα τῶν ἁπάντων! Τούτων ἡ κέλλα οὐρανός, ἥλιος δέ ἐκεῖνοι, καί τό φῶς ἐστιν ἐν αὐτοῖς, τό ἄδυτον καί θεῖον, ὅ καί φωτίζει ἅπαντα ἐρχόμενον ἐν κόσμῳ ἄνθρωπον καί γενόμενον ἐκ Πνεύματος Ἁγίου. Νύξ οὖν οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν αὐτοῖς˙ πῶς εἰπεῖν σοι οὐκ ἔχω, φρίττω γάρ ταῦτα γράφων σοι καί ἐννοῶν δέ τρέμω, ἀλλά διδάσκω σε τό πῶς ζῶσι καί ποίῳ τρόπῳ οἱ τῷ Θεῷ δουλεύοντες κἀκεῖνον ἀντί πάντων μόνον καί ἀγαπήσαντες, μόνῳ καί ἑνωθέντες καί γεγονότες μοναχοί ὡς μετά μόνου μόνοι, εἰ καί ἐν δήμῳ παμπληθεῖ εἰσίν ἀπειλημένοι. Οὗτοι γάρ ὄντως μοναχοί καί μονάζοντες μόνοι, γυμνοί καί ἐνθυμήσεων καί λογισμῶν παντοίων, μόνον ὁρῶντες τόν Θεόν ἐν νοΐ ἀνεννοίῳ, ἐμπεπηγμένῳ ἐν φωτί, ὥσπερ ἐν τοίχῳ βέλος, ἤ ὡς ἀστήρ ἐν οὐρανῷ, ἤ πῶς εἰπεῖν οὐκ ἔχω. Ὅμως ὡς ἄλλον φωτεινόν νυμφῶνα κατοικοῦσι τάς κέλλας καί ἐν οὐρανῷ νομίζουσι διάγειν ἤ ἀληθῶς διάγουσι, βλέπε, μή ἀπιστήσῃς! (214) Οὐ γάρ εἰσίν ἐπί τῆς γῆς, εἰ καί τῇ γῇ κρατοῦνται, ἀλλ᾿ ἐν φωτί διάγουσι τοῦ μέλλοντος αἰῶνος, ᾧ κατοικοῦσιν ἄγγελοι, ἐφ᾿ ᾧ περιπατοῦσιν, ὑφ᾿ οὗπερ διαρπάζονται ἀρχαί καί ἐξουσίαι, θρόνοι καί κυριότητες πᾶσαι ἐνδυναμοῦνται. Εἰ γάρ καί ἐπαναπαύεται Θεός ἐν τοῖς ἁγίοις, ἀλλ᾿ ἐν Θεῷ οἱ ἅγιοι ζῶσί τε καί κινοῦνται, βαδίζοντες ἐν τῷ φωτί ὥσπερ ἐπί ἐδάφους. Ὤ θαύματος, ὡς ἄγγελοι καί ὡς υἱοί ὑψίστου ἔσονται μετά θάνατον, θεοί Θεῷ συνόντες, τῷ φύσει ὄντι οἱ αὐτῷ θέσει ὁμοιωθέντες.
