phylarch of the Saracens, to bring dues to the emperor, which of his children ought to hold his phylarchy after his death, and concerning the things being done by Ambrus, the son of Alamundar, in his territories. In the month of December a great fire occurred, and the hospice of Samson was completely burned and the dwellings in front of the house of Rufus and the courtyard, which is near the great church, the one called the Garsonostasion, and the two hermitages near Saint Irene along with its courtyard and part of its narthex. ληʹ. μʹ. δʹ. ιγʹ. κʹ. ιϛʹ. ϛʹ. In this year, in the month of March, in the 13th indiction, Belisarius the patrician died in Byzantium, and his property went to the imperial house of Marina. In the same 13th indiction, on the 12th of the month of April, Eutychius, the patriarch of Constantinople, was deposed and exiled in Amaseia by Justinian. And in his place was appointed John, an ex-scholasticus, who was the apocrisiarius of Antioch the Great and presbyter of the same church. In the same year Justinian the emperor, having raised the dogma concerning the corruptible 241 and incorruptible and having sent an edict everywhere foreign to piety, by God's providence, died on the 14th of the month of November of the following 14th indiction, having reigned 38 years, 7 months, and 13 days. And his successor became his nephew, Justin the curopalates. In the same year the Theodosians and Gaianites in Alexandria began to build meeting-places, and the Gaianites, acting on their own authority, ordained for themselves as bishop Elpidius, their archdeacon; whom the emperor ordered to be brought in chains. But on his way, near Sigris, he died. The Theodosians, however, secretly by night ordained for themselves Dorotheus as bishop. And having come together as one, both the Gaianites and the Theodosians enthroned a common bishop for themselves. But a certain monk John, * whom the Gaianites, believing he had practiced deceit, flayed the abbot's beard with the skin and the flesh. Years of the world ϛνηʹ. Years of the divine incarnation φνηʹ. In this year, on the 14th of the month of November, of the 14th indiction, Justin, the nephew of Justinian, began his reign, having been crowned by John the patriarch, the ex-scholasticus. He was a Thracian by birth, magnanimous and skillful in all things, a lover of building. He also had a wife named Sophia, whom he also crowned augusta. Being pious he adorned 242 the churches built by Justinian, both the great church and the Holy Apostles and other churches and monasteries, bestowing upon them treasures and all their revenue. And he was very orthodox. And he sent the abbas Photeinus, the stepson of Belisarius the patrician, giving him authority over every person and matter to bring peace to all the churches of Egypt and Alexandria. βʹ. μβʹ. ϛʹ. βʹ. βʹ. ιηʹ. ηʹ. In this year Aetherius and Audius and the physician with them plotted against the emperor Justin and having been discovered died by the sword. He held a consulship and threw much money, so as to enrich many. In the same year the abbas Agathon, brother of Apollinaris the bishop of Alexandria, having come to Alexandria and while demanding an account from Eustochius the monk, who was then the great oikonomos of Alexandria, for the sake of the administration imprisoned him; who, having fled through the roof, came to Byzantium, Macarius at that time having been expelled from the church through a plot; and Eustochius was ordained bishop of Jerusalem in place of Macarius.
