he has been revealed as such for all who have ever been called righteous; therefore he alone might properly be called righteous, so that the prophecy might speak about him, "Behold how the righteous one is taken away;" but from what he is taken away it adds in this: "For the righteous one has been taken away from the face of iniquity;" and who it is that takes him away, it is possible to hear from him when he says, "No one takes my life from me; I have authority to lay it down, and again I have authority to take it up." Then it says, "His burial is in peace;" here it should be noted that the prophetic scripture signifies not only the things concerning his death, but also the things concerning his burial, whence also the holy apostle writing to the Corinthians says, "For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received, that Christ died 227 for our sins according to the scriptures, and that he was buried." And what scriptures, if not those saying "he was led to death for the iniquities of my people," and "his burial is in peace"? But not only is the aforementioned righteous one taken away from the midst of iniquity, but also "righteous men," it says, "are taken away," who would also be the holy apostles of Christ, and his wonderful martyrs, who themselves are also called righteous by participation in his righteousness; but when these things were being accomplished, "no one," it says, "was looking," and "no one understood," clearly those whose heart had been made dull and who had closed their eyes that they might not see, to whom the following parts of the prophecy are said, beginning with, "But you, come here, you lawless sons, seed of adulterers and a prostitute." Ps. 30. And those from the west will fear the name of the Lord, and those from the rising of the sun the glorious name; for the wrath from the Lord will come like a violent river, it will come with anger. And the redeemer will come for the sake of Zion, and will turn away ungodliness from Jacob, said the Lord. And this is my covenant with them: my spirit which is upon you, and the words which I have put in your mouth, shall not fail from your mouth, nor from the mouth of your seed, said the Lord, from now and for ever. Again, through these things the word prophesies of the calling of the church from the Gentiles established through our Savior; for who else would be those said to be "from the west," or through whom did the diverse nations fear the name 228 of the Lord, those who through the teaching of Jesus abandoned the former error of darkness that comes from ignorance, and fled for refuge to the God of all; and who is the one prophesied to come from Zion, to redeem and turn Jacob from his former ungodliness, if not he who came to save the lost sheep of the house of Israel who were in ungodliness, to whom he says the Spirit of God in Christ will covenant the words of eternal life, which the Father has given into the mouth of the Son; which he also says will fail neither from him, nor from the mouth of his seed from now and for eternal time? These would be the words of the gospel of the new covenant, which, although so many have plotted against them both long ago and still plot now, have not failed nor will they fail from the mouth of the church established from the rational and intelligible seed of Christ; for the Lord has spoken and declared that he will not blot them out from now and for ever; wherefore also according to John the gospel of Christ is seen as an eternal gospel. Ps. 31. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for which reason he has anointed me; the Lord has sent me to preach good news to the poor, to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim release to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to call the acceptable year of the Lord, and a day of recompense for our God; to comfort all who mourn, to give 229 to those who mourn in Zion glory instead of ashes, an ointment of gladness to those who mourn, a garment of glory instead of a spirit of despair; and they will be called generations of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for glory. Jesus the Christ of God, who came forth from the root of Jesse, upon whom the seven spirits of God have rested, having loved righteousness and hated iniquity, was anointed by his God and Father with the so-called spiritual
