words, that this man must immediately be dragged and burned. 6.41.9 And for a long time this flourished in this manner, but sedition and civil war succeeding turned their cruelty against us toward one another, and we breathed again a little, as they found themselves occupied from their rage against us, but immediately the change of that more kindly rule was announced to us, and the great fear of the threat against us was intensified. 6.41.10 "And then the edict arrived, almost that very thing, the most terrible, which was foretold by our Lord, so as, if possible, to cause even the elect to stumble. 6.41.11 But all were terrified; and immediately many of the more prominent, some came forward out of fear, others in public life were led by their duties, and others were dragged forth by those around them; and being called by name, they approached the profane and unholy sacrifices, some pale and trembling, as if they were not about to sacrifice, but to be themselves victims and sacrifices to the idols, so that they were mocked by the great crowd standing around, and were clearly shown to be cowards in everything, both in respect to dying and in respect to sacrificing; 6.41.12 but some ran more readily to the altars, asserting by their boldness that they had not even been Christians before, concerning whom the Lord’s prophecy is most true that they will be saved with difficulty. Of the rest, some followed both these groups, others fled; 6.41.13 others were captured, and of these some went as far as bonds and imprisonment, and some having been confined for several days, then, even before coming to trial, recanted, while others, having endured tortures for a time, gave up at the next stage. 6.41.14 "But the firm and blessed pillars of the Lord, being strengthened by him and having received power and endurance worthy of and corresponding to the strong faith within them, became wonderful witnesses of his kingdom; 6.41.15 of whom the first was Julianus, a man afflicted with gout, unable to stand or walk, who was brought forward with two others who were carrying him; of whom the one immediately denied, but the other, Cronion by name, surnamed Eunous, and the aged Julianus himself, having confessed the Lord, were carried on camels through the whole city, which is very great as you know, and were scourged high up, and finally were consumed in quicklime, with all the people crowded around. 6.41.16 And a soldier who stood by them as they were led away and opposed those who were insulting them, when they cried out, was brought forward, the most courageous soldier of God, Besas, and having distinguished himself in the great war for piety, was beheaded. 6.41.17 And another, a Libyan by race, and in name as well as in blessing a true Macar, though much urged by the judge to deny, was not persuaded and was burned alive.
