and let us seek the unshaken glory; which may we all attain by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom and with whom to the Father be the glory, together with the Holy Spirit, now and always, and unto the endless ages of ages. Amen.
59.171 HOMILY 30. He that comes from above is above all; he that is of
the earth, is of the earth, and speaks of the earth. 1. Terrible is the love of glory, terrible and full of many evils; it is a kind of thorn
difficult to pull out, and an untamable, many-headed beast, arming itself against those who nourish it. For just as the worm eats through the wood from which it is born, and rust consumes the iron whence it comes, and moths the wool; so too does vainglory destroy the soul that nourishes it. Therefore we need much diligence, in order to destroy this passion. See, at least, here how many things John chants to his disciples who are suffering from this, and with difficulty calms them. For after the things said before, he also pours other words upon them. What words are these? "He that comes from above," he says, "is above all; he that is of the earth is of the earth, and speaks of the earth." Since, he says, you turn my testimony upside down, and by this you say that I am more worthy of belief, it is necessary for you to know this, that it is not possible for the one who comes from heaven to become worthy of belief from one who dwells on the earth. But the phrase, "Above all," what can it be, and what does it wish to declare? It is this. For by this he shows that he needs nothing, but is sufficient unto himself, and that he is incomparably greater than all. And he calls himself "of the earth" and "speaking" of the earth, not because he spoke from his own mind, but just as Christ said, "If I have told you earthly things, and you do not believe"; thus calling the baptism, not 59.172 is vain, having a name empty of substance; but that one is true, the one from heaven, having not men, but angels and archangels, and the Lord of archangels, or rather with him also men as praisers. If you look to that theater, if you learn of the crowns there, if you transfer yourself to the applause from there, the things here will never be able to hold you, nor will you consider things that happen here to be great, nor will you seek them when they are absent. For indeed in these royal courts no one of the spearmen standing by the king, ceasing to please the one who wears the diadem and sits upon the throne, busies himself with the voices of jackdaws, or the noise of flies and gnats flying about and buzzing; for in no way better than these are the praises of men disposed. Knowing therefore the worthlessness of human things, let us gather everything into the inviolable treasuries, and let us seek the abiding and unshaken glory; which may we all attain by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom and with whom to the Father be the glory, together with the Holy Spirit, now and always, and unto the endless ages of ages. Amen. 59.171 HOMILY 30. He that comes from above is above all; he that is of the earth is of the earth, and speaks of the earth. 1.
