Eliakim, interpreted as "resurrection of God," became a symbol of the new and renewed priesthood, which the resurrection of our Savior established in his own Church throughout the whole world. For Christ is called high priest in place of those others, as Eliakim was in place of Somnas. For according to the Apostle. "No one takes the honor for himself, but he who is called by God. Just as Christ did not glorify himself to become high priest, but he who said to him, "You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek." And he is said to receive also the Glory of David, that is, the rule and kingdom over the spiritual Israel; "For not all," he says, "who are descended from Israel are Israel," and what follows. But to Christ having become high priest, there will be, he says, no one to speak against him. "For an enemy shall not prevail against him, and a lawless son shall not proceed to afflict him." And in another way, even if Israel spoke against him, the nations at least submitted. Therefore, concerning that one he says: "Deliver me from the contentions of the people." But concerning these: "You will make me the head of the nations. A people whom I had not known served me. As soon as they heard, they obeyed me;" and again concerning those others, "Foreign sons have been false to me." And: "Because they have grown old and limp from their paths." For they have grown old, and have come near to destruction; for a time they have kept a broken mind, having become foreign sons. For Israel, having long been the firstborn, when they were false to Christ, they became foreigners, henceforth being called 2181 children of perdition and of hell; in place of whom he showed us Eliakim. Who also says. "Because of the oppression of the poor and the groaning of the needy, now I will arise, says the Lord." But in the Church, the house of his father, everyone who trusts in him, he says, will be both glorious and small, I mean, according to the world. For the God of all is not a respecter of persons. But you will understand this also according to the measure of spiritual age. CHAPTER 23. THE VISION OF TYRE. aiē'. 9Wail, ships of Carthage, for it is destroyed, and they come no more. But now they do not only prophesy concerning the nations, but also through each one is conveyed a way of life befitting piety; as in foretelling the destruction of Babylon, he spoke about the universal judgment of God. And the oracle concerning Egypt says there will be an altar to God in it and a multitude of pious men. And the one concerning Moab, that a Church and a throne of God will be in it, when idolatry has ceased in it as in Egypt. And the one concerning Damascus, says there will be a conversion of those who formerly did not know God. And the present one concerning Tyre, in addition to its sufferings, foretells that offerings will be made to the Lord in it. And you might say in another way, for the benefit of those from Israel, that the prophecies concerning the nations are foretold, so that they might know, that God is not God of them alone, but that his providence also extends through all, always bringing punishments for impieties to the other nations as well; as also now to the Tyrians, because they also mocked the people of God when they suffered evil, not as suffering for their sins, but as if the God who saves them had become weak. Therefore, along with suffering Jerusalem, all the surrounding nations have suffered, having had the same disposition as the Tyrians, all having been laid waste by the Assyrians. And those who rose up together against his own people, at the time it was being captured, David enumerates, saying thus: 2184 O God, who will be like you? Πεπαλαίωνται γὰρ, καὶ ἐγγὺς γεγόνασιν ἀφανισμοῦ κεκλασμένην τέως περιεσχήκασι τὴν διάνοιαν υἱοὶ γεγονότες ἀλλότριοι. "Ἀπὸ τῆς ταλαιπωρίας τῶν πτωχῶν καὶ τοῦ στεναγμοῦ τῶν πενήτων νῦν ἀναστήσομαι, λέγει Κύριος." Ἐκ γῆς Κιτιαίων ἦκται αἰχμάλωτος· τίνι ὅμοιοι γεγόνασιν οἱ ἐνοικοῦντες ἐν τῇ νήσῳ μετάβολοι Φοινίκης, διαπερῶντες τὴν θάλασσαν ἐν ὕδατι πολλῷ; Σπέρμα μεταβόλων, ὡς ἀμητοῦ εἰσφερομένου, οἱ μετάβολοι τῶν ἐθνῶν9. κ.τ.λ. Οὐ περὶ πραγμάτων μόνον ἤδη λαβόντων τὴν ἔκβασιν τῆς ἐπ' αὐτοῖς προῤῥήσεως, αἱ προφητεῖαί φασιν· οὕτω γὰρ ἂν ἔδοξεν οὐδὲν εἶναι ταῦτα πρὸς ἡμᾶς, εἰ καὶ τὰ μάλιστα διὰ τούτων ἀψευδὲς θαυμάζειν ἐχρῆν τὸν Θεόν. Νυνὶ δὲ οὐ προθεσπίζουσι μόνον ἐπὶ τοῖς ἔθνεσιν, ἀλλὰ καὶ καθ' ἑκάστην διάζων φέρεται τρόπος θεοσεβείᾳ προσήκων· ὡς ἐν τῷ προλέγειν τὴν Βαβυλῶνος καθαίρεσιν, περὶ καθολικῆς τοῦ Θεοῦ διείλεκται κρίσεως. Ὁ περὶ Αἰγύπτου δὲ λόγος θυσιαστήριον ἔσεσθαι Θεοῦ κατ' αὐτήν φησι θεοσεβῶν τε πλῆθος ἀνδρῶν. Ὁ δὲ περὶ Μωὰβ, Ἐκκλησίαν τε καὶ θρόνον ἐν αὐτῇ γενέσθαι Θεοῦ, παυσαμένης ὡς ἐν Αἰγύπτω κἀν ταύτῃ τῆς εἰδωλολατρείας. Ὁ δὲ περὶ ∆αμασκοῦ, ἐπιστροφὴν ἔσεσθαί φησι τῶν πάλαι τὸν Θεὸν ἀγνοούντων. Ὁ δὲ νῦν περὶ Τύρου, πρὸς τοῖς αὐτῆς πάθεσιν, προσφορὰς ἐν αὐτῇ προαγορεύει Κυρίῳ γενήσεσθαι. Εἴποις δ' ἂν καὶ ἄλλως, ὠφελείας ἕνεκα τῶν ἐξ Ἰσραὴλ, τὰς περὶ τῶν ἐθνῶν προλέγεσθαι προφητείας, ὡς ἂν γνοῖεν, ὡς οὐ μόνων αὐτῶν Θεός ἐστιν ὁ Θεὸς, ἀλλ' ὅτι καὶ διὰ πάντων ἡ τούτου διέρχεται πρόνοια, ποινὰς ἀεὶ τὰς ἐπὶ ταῖς ἀσεβείαις καὶ τοῖς ἔθνεσιν παροῦσα τοῖς λοιποῖς· ὡς καὶ νῦν Τυρίοις, ὄτι καὶ τῷ τοῦ Θεοῦ λαῷ παθόντι κακῶς ἐπετώθαζον, οὐχ ὡς δι' ἁμαρτίας παθοῦσιν, ἀλλ' ὡς τοῦ σώζοντος αὐτοὺς ἠσθενηκότος Θεοῦ. ∆ιὸ σὺν Ἱερουσαλὴμ παθούσῃ, πάντες οἱ κύκλῳ πεπόνθασιν ἐθνικοὶ τὴν αὐτὴν Τυρίοις, ἐσχηκότες προαίρεσιν, ἀνάστατοι πάντες ὑπ' Ἀσσυρίων γενόμενοι. Τοὺς συνεπαναστάντας δὲ τῷ ἰδίῳ λαῷ, καθ' ὃν ἡλίσκετο χρόνον, ἀπαριθμεῖται ∆αβὶδ οὕτως εἰπών· 2184 Ὁ Θεὸς, τίς ὁμοιωθήσεταί σοι; μὴ σιγήσῃς, μηδὲ καταπραΰνῃς, ὁ Θεός· ὅτι ἰδοὺ οἱ ἐχθροί σου ἤχησαν, καὶ οἱ μισοῦντές σε ἦραν κεφαλήν· ἐπὶ τὸν λαόν σου κατεπανουργεύσαντο γνώμην, καὶ ἐβουλεύσαντο κατὰ τῶν ὁσίων σου· Εἶπαν·
