of her relatives, and he placed it on the altar, saying, "Show, Lord, whose the virgin shall be." and the rod of Joseph the carpenter sprouted, and they betrothed her to him, he being 80 years old. and he brought her to his house, and she lived 1.327 fasting and secluded with his two daughters. and after six months the archangel Gabriel appeared to her, announcing the salvation of the world. But she announced it to no one, until she gave birth. And these things happened in the first month, that is, March, on the 25th, on the 1st day of the week and the 1st of the moon; for this is also the sixth month of the conception of John. And the Theotokos, when the archangel had departed, went to the hill country, that is, Bethlehem (for this place is higher than Nazareth) and she greeted Elizabeth, who was her cousin, and made known to her the vision of the angel, and that she had conceived a male child, and that Zacharias had seen a vision; for Elizabeth did not know, since Zacharias had fallen silent. and after three months she returned to Galilee. Joseph then, returning from his journey, and finding the virgin with child, and being troubled, wanted to send her away secretly; but, encouraged by the vision of the angel, he kept her. Then, when the neighbors slandered him and bitterly reviled him, as having taken the virgin from the temple not for marriage but for custody, and having secretly married her, they both drank the water of ordeal and were sent to the hill country. After this, when they saw them return having suffered no evil, they released them. And when the census took place, she went up with Joseph to Judea; but not arriving in time, they lodged in a suburb of Bethlehem, which was the property of Salome the midwife, the cousin of the Theotokos. and there she gave birth to Emmanuel, and on the eighth day 1.328 he circumcised the child. and after 40 days she brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord according to the law, and he was received by the righteous Simeon. For this God-receiver Simeon, being a Jew, was one of the 70 who translated the old divine scripture, composed in Hebrew, into the Greek language in the time of Ptolemy Philadelphus, king of Egypt, before the time of Christ's coming, as the divine Chrysostom says in his Hexaemeron. who, having come upon the saying of the prophet Isaiah that says, "behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel," he disbelieved this, saying it was impossible, as far as human nature is concerned, for a virgin to give birth. Thus holding this view, he received a divine revelation to remain in this life until the divine saying of the prophet should be fulfilled; which indeed the divine gospel also clearly teaches us, saying, "the Holy Spirit was upon him, and it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ." Therefore, seeing him in the temple as a forty-day-old infant, and receiving him into his arms, and having said, "Now you are letting your servant depart, O Lord, according to your word, in peace," he departed to him rejoicing. Then Joseph was instructed to flee to Egypt. And after two years, Herod carried out the slaughter of the infants, and he killed Zacharias inside the sanctuary while he was ministering. And Elizabeth, taking John, went out into the wilderness, and was hidden in a cave for forty days, and died. And 1.329 John, led by the angel in the wilderness and brought up in it, remained until the manifestation of the Lord.
And after five years, Joseph returned to Nazareth from Egypt, and Cleopas, his brother by the same father and same mother, took his daughter Mary, and from her he begot Simeon, who after James the brother of the Lord became bishop of Jerusalem and having been martyred under Domitian, was crucified. And Judas his brother begot two sons, Zoker and James.
