The Avars came to the regions of the Danube, 247 and when the emperor learned of it, he sent Tiberius, the count of the excubitors, against them; and joining battle with them he was defeated, having been surprised by them, and having lost many men, he returned. But Hormisdas, the king of the Persians, having appointed Ardamanes general, sent him to cross the Euphrates and to ravage the land of the Romans. And he himself, taking his forces, came upon the Romans who were besieging Nisibis. And Martinus, learning this, abandoned Nisibis and withdrew to Roman territory. And Ardamanes, having come to Antioch and having destroyed the suburbs of the city, proceeded into Coele-Syria. Thus, then, Ardamanes, having taken many captives, returned to his own country. But the emperor Justin, greatly distressed at these events, removed Martinus from his command, and appointed Archelaus as general. And Ardamanes took Daras and thus returned. And when Justin learned this, struck by the magnitude of the disaster, he was overcome by a sickness of delirium and asked Hormisdas to make a truce, who agreed to make a one-year truce. Year of the world 6067. Year of the divine incarnation 567. Justin, emperor of the Romans, for 13 years. 10. Hormisdas, king of the Persians, for 15 years. 2. John, bishop of Constantinople, for 12 years. 10. John, bishop of Jerusalem, for 20 years. 3. John, bishop of Alexandria, for 11 years. 7. Gregory, bishop of Antioch, for 24 years. 5. In this year, the emperor Justin, having adopted Tiberius, the count of the excubitors, proclaimed him caesar and made him his colleague on the throne both in the hippodromes and on auspicious days. For the emperor was suffering in his feet and was for the most part bedridden. 248 11. 3. 11. 4. 8. 6. In this year Justin built the great aqueduct of Valens and supplied the city with an abundance of water. 12. 4. 12. 5. 9. 7. In this year the emperor Justin, taking the synagogue of the Jews, which was in the Chalkoprateia, from them, made it a church of our lady the holy Theotokos, which was near the great church. In the same year, on the 31st of the month of August, in the 10th indiction, John, the bishop of Constantinople, died. Eutychius, bishop of Constantinople, again for 4 years. 13. 5. 1. 6. 10. 8. In this year, in the month of October, in the 11th indiction, Eutychius again received the throne of Constantinople. And the emperor, having fallen ill and recovering a little from the sickness, summoned the high priest and the senate and all the priests and magistrates; and bringing forth caesar Tiberius, in the presence of all he proclaimed him emperor, using these words: "Behold, God has favored you, this dignity God has given you, not I. Honor it, so that you may be honored by Him. Honor your mother, who was once your mistress. You know that you were first her slave, but now her son. Do not rejoice in bloodshed. Do not take part in murders. Do not render evil for evil. Do not be like me in enmity; for I, as a man, have erred. For indeed I was fallible and have received according to my sins. But I will have my reckoning with those who did this to me before the judgment seat of Christ. Let not this dignity puff you up, as it did me. So attend to all, as to yourself. Know who you were and who you are now. Do not be arrogant, and you will not sin. You know who I was, and what I became, and what I am. All these are your children and servants. You know that I preferred you before my own kin. These [whom] you see, in them you see the whole state. Take care of your soldier. Do not 249 receive slanderers. Let no one say to you that your predecessor behaved so; for I say these things from what I have suffered. Let those who have possessions enjoy them; but to those who do not have, give." And when a prayer had been made by the patriarch, and after the "Amen" had been said by all, the caesar fell at the feet of the emperor, and the emperor said to him: "If you wish, I am; if you wish, I am not.
