Solomon king of Israel in the temple of the Lord according to the word of the Lord; and he carried away all Jerusalem and all the princes and the mighty men of valor into captivity, having taken ten thousand captive, and all the children and the craftsman, and none remained except the poor of the land. And he carried Jehoiachin away to Babylon and the mother and the wives of the king and the eunuchs and the mighty of the land he led into captivity from Jerusalem to Babylon, and all the men of might, men of valor, fit for war, 7,000, and the craftsman and the smith, a thousand, all mighty men fit for war, and the king of Babylon led them into exile to Babylon. And the king of Babylon made Mattathias his son king in his stead, and changed his name to Zedekiah. Zedekiah was a son of twenty years when he began to reign and reigned 11 years in Jerusalem.
265 These things written word for word in the 4th of Kings I have set forth, so that readers may know that there have been different captivities of the Hebrew race, and that for this reason the predictions of the prophets who have spoken should not be understood in one manner or time; for 70 years the nation will continue captive in Babylonia; and of these, the beginning is different, and the end of them is also different. Therefore according to the writing of Ezra, in the first year of Cyrus the seventy-year period was fulfilled, having begun from the 4th year of Jehoiakim, at which time the decree of God also went forth through the mouth of Jeremiah, but according to the prophecy of Zechariah the prophet crying out after 42 years: O Lord, how long will you not have mercy on Jerusalem and on the cities of Judah, which you have overlooked this 70th year? From some other point this same 70-year period will have its beginning. And this is found to be taken from the death of Nebuchadnezzar until the complete building of the temple, which, having first begun from the 1st year of Cyrus, was stopped by the same Cyrus when only the foundations had been laid, until the 2nd year of Darius Hystaspes. And in the 2nd year of the same Darius, when complete permission was given to the nation and for the rebuilding of the temple, in the 6th year of Darius the work was completed, as will be shown in order from the holy writing of Ezra. Therefore, the 70 years of the captivity of Judah from the 4th year of Jehoiakim until the first year of Cyrus are these: Jehoiakim from the 4th year to the 11th, 8 years. Of Zedekiah, 11 years. Of Nebuchadnezzar, 25 years. Of Evil-Merodach, 5 years. Of Neriglissar, also called Belshazzar, 3 years. Of Darius Astyages, 17 years. Of Cyrus, 1. Total, 70. And the years from the death of Nebuchadnezzar to the complete building of the temple and the oracles of Zechariah the prophet are again numbered as 70 years, thus: Evil-Merodach, 5 years. Neriglissar, 3 years. Darius Astyages, 17 years. Cyrus, 31. Cambyses, 8. Darius Hystaspes, 6. Completed. Total, 70. From this captivity was Daniel along with those with him, Hananiah, Azariah, Mishael. This Daniel, having been taught the learning, became pleasing to king Nebuchadnezzar. Africanus also testifies these things, that Daniel and the three youths were from the 2nd captivity of Judah.
266 But Panodorus and other historians say from the captivity in Samaria under Shalmaneser. Zedekiah reigned as the 20th of Judah for 11 years. and it was the year of the world 4813. Africanus numbers the 70 years of the captivity from the 1st year of Zedekiah. In the 5th year of Zedekiah, and of the world the 4th, the great prophet Ezekiel began to prophesy. And in the same year of the captivity of Jehoiakim, Zedekiah declared to the captives in Babylon that after 70 years they would return from Babylon according to the prophecy of Jeremiah. Hananiah the false prophet, opposing Jeremiah, dies, at which time Ezekiel is prophesying in Babylon. In Jerusalem there occurred manumissions of slaves. Jeremiah seeing the sons of Jonadab, son of Rechab, who had entered Jerusalem during the siege of Zedekiah, not drinking wine nor dwelling under a roof on account of their father's
