many are the departures from daily cares. For whatever our pursuits in life may be, such must our dreams also be.
TITLE 5. -Concerning hope; that one must hope in God, and not in the protection of men.
He who trusts in the Lord shall be saved. Let all who hope in you rejoice, forever, and the rest. A defender of all who hope in him. Some in chariots, and some in horses; but we in the name, and the rest. In you our fathers hoped; they hoped, and you delivered them. My eyes are ever toward the Lord, for he, and the rest. 95.1428 Hoping in the Lord I will not be weak. In him my heart trusted, and I was helped. In you, O Lord, I have hoped; let me never be put to shame. Mercy will surround him who hopes in the Lord. Hope in the Lord, and do good, and dwell in the land. Reveal your way to the Lord. Blessed is the man whose hope is the name of the Lord. Cast your care upon the Lord, and he will sustain you. Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me, for in you my soul has trusted. In God I have hoped; I will not fear what man can do to me. He led them in hope, and they were not afraid. It is good to trust in the Lord, rather than to trust in man. Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion. Do not trust in princes, in sons of men; in that day their thoughts will perish. Be confident in the Lord with all your heart. He who trusts in the Lord will be in his care. He who trusts in the Lord is blessed. He who trusts in the Lord will rejoice. The Lord is our judge, the Lord is our ruler, the Lord is our king, the Lord is our savior; he will save us. Behold, God is my savior; I will trust in him, and I will be saved. Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord; and the Lord will be his hope; and he will be like a thriving tree by the waters, and will cast his root toward moisture There is no shame for those who trust in you. Look to the ancient generations, and see: who ever trusted in the Lord, and was put to shame? Or who abided in his fear, and was forsaken? Or who called upon him, and he overlooked him? Because the Lord is compassionate and merciful, and forgives sins. For in hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is not hope. For what a man sees, why does he also hope for? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. Therefore, stand, girding up the loins of your mind, being sober. 95.1429 Hope completely on the grace given to you. Let us persuade ourselves, brothers, in time of temptation, not to run to human hopes, and to seek help for ourselves, but in tears and groans, and diligent prayer, and intense vigilance to make our supplications. For thus he who despises human help as vain receives help from affliction. It is impossible for one who hopes in God with his whole mind, and contributes all he has, to fall from his end; it is impossible for one who uses diligence, and is anxious for his own salvation, and shows all that is in his power, ever to be forsaken by God. When there is no hope of human help for us from anywhere, let us not despair, let us not lose heart, but let us seize the anchor of faith. Let us cast the instrument of hope, not into the sea, but into heaven, and the storm-tossed vessel will be delivered from dangers. Do not trust in rulers; do not be puffed up by the uncertainty of wealth; do not be proud of bodily strength; do not pursue the conspicuousness of human glory. None of these things saves. All are temporary; all are deceitful; God is the one refuge. Cursed is he who has his hope in man When we are in tribulations, we run to everything else rather than God. The child is sick? And you look around for the enchanter, or the one who practices curious arts
