I am all the more delighted, and I am neither sated with seeing nor filled with drinking. For whenever I seem to have drunk my fill, then the beauty of the rays that are sent forth makes me thirst exceedingly and I find myself hungry again; and as much as I strive again to fill my belly, my mouth is burned tenfold and I am set on fire by the thirst and desire for the most transparent drink.
Therefore by this good judgment everyone who is judged will not fear another punishment or torment, nor will he dread the temptations coming upon him. For his thirst will not cease unto eternity and his sweet and bright-white drink will not fail, and the sweetness from the drink and the joy-making splendor coming from the sun drives away all sorrow from his soul and always makes that man rejoice, and no one harming him will prevail against him, nor (309) will there be anyone to prevent him from being filled from the spring of the cup. For the one who rules through the wickedness of the earth, the prince of darkness, who reigns over all the water of the sea and mocks the world as one holding a little sparrow in his hand, with all his host and power will not approach the heel of his foot, nor will he dare to look at him with boldness. For the gleam of the wine and the ray of the sun flashing brightly toward the face of the one drinking pass through to his inward parts and to his hands and feet and to his back parts and, making the drinker all fire, they will strengthen him to burn and melt the enemies who approach him from all sides, and he becomes beloved to the light of the sun and a friend to the sun and to the bright-white wine like a beloved son of the rays poured forth from them; for his drink is nourishment and a cleansing of the filth of his decayed flesh, and the cleansing is whole health to him, and health does not allow him to be fed any other sickening food, but it gives him an infinite and burning desire to drink from the wine and to cleanse himself more and to make the drink his health. For the beauty of health and the delight of loveliness, which comes from health, has no satiety.
So it shall be, then, beloved children, my sons, my cherished ones, who hear my words, for everyone who has sinned before the Lord God Almighty and receives in his heart a sense of the fear of His judgment and turning away. For the fear of the Lord and the sense of His just recompense so melts the flesh and crushes the bones, (310) as a stone suspended by a machine presses and violently squeezes the bunches of grapes being trodden in the winepress. For men first tread the grapes, then they press them under the stone and render them without any moisture, but as for the man who has entered into the fear of God, the fear of God itself makes him become a thing to be trampled on by all other men. And when it has completely smoothed and crushed the proud and vainglorious mind of his flesh, then holy humility, the intelligible stone, most light and good, falling from above, having squeezed out all the moisture of fleshly pleasures and passions, does not show the squeezed-out soul to be useless, but having drenched it with rivers of tears makes it gush forth living water and heals the wounds from sins and washes away their ichor and sores and shows that whole man to be brighter than snow.
Blessed, therefore, is that man, who hears these words and receives them with faith and does them, because having found great goods, which are beyond mind and reason and thought, he will bless my wretched hand, which wrote these things, and he will glorify the merciful and most-merciful Lord, who through a defiled

περισσοτέρως μᾶλλον ἡδύνομαι, καί οὔτε τοῦ βλέπειν κορέννυμι οὔτε τοῦ πίνειν ἐμπίπλαμαι. Ὅταν γάρ τοῦ πίνειν χορτασθῆναι δοκήσω, τότε τό κάλλος τῶν ἐκπεμπομένων ἀκτίνων διψᾶν με σφόδρα ποιεῖ καί λιμώττων πάλιν εὑρίσκομαι· καί ὅσῳ πάλιν φιλονεικήσω τήν ἐμήν ἐμπλῆσαι γαστέρα, καίεται τό στόμα μου δεκαπλασίως καί τῇ δίψῃ καί ἐπιθυμίᾳ τοῦ διειδεστάτου πόματος ἐκπυρίζομαι.
Ταύτῃ οὖν τῇ καλῇ κρίσει πᾶς ὁ κρινόμενος ἑτέραν οὐ φοβηθήσεται τιμωρίαν ἤ βάσανον, οὐδέ πειρασμούς δειλιάσει τούς ἐπερχομένους αὐτῷ. Ἡ γάρ δίψα αὐτοῦ οὐ παυθήσεται εἰς τόν αἰῶνα καί τό ἡδύ καί λευκολαμπές αὐτοῦ πόμα οὐκ ἐκλείψει, καί ἡ ἐκ τοῦ ποτοῦ ἡδύτης καί ἡ ἐκ τοῦ ἡλίου ἐξερχομένη χαροποιός αἴγλη πᾶσαν λύπην ἐκ τῆς ψυχῆς αὐτοῦ ἐκδιώκει καί πάντοτε χαίρειν ποιεῖ τόν ἄνθρωπον ἐκεῖνον, καί οὐδείς βλάπτων κατισχύσει αὐτοῦ, οὐδέ (309) ὁ κωλύσων αὐτόν ἔσται ἐκ τῆς πηγῆς τοῦ ποτηρίου μή ἐμφορηθῆναι. Ὁ γάρ κρατῶν τῇ κακίᾳ τῆς γῆς, ὁ ἄρχων τοῦ σκότου, ὁ βασιλεύων ἐπί πᾶν ὕδωρ θαλάσσης καί κόσμον ἐμπαίζων ὡς εἴ τις μικρόν στρουθίον κατέχων ἐν τῇ χειρί αὐτοῦ, μετά πάσης αὐτοῦ τῆς στρατιᾶς καί τῆς δυνάμεως οὐ προσεγγίσει πτέρναν ποδός αὐτοῦ, οὐδέ προσβλέψαι αὐτῷ μετά θάρσους τολμήσει. Ἡ γάρ στίλβα τοῦ οἴνου καί ἡ ἀκτίς τοῦ ἡλίου πρός τό πρόσωπον τοῦ πίνοντος φαιδρῶς ἀπαστράπτουσαι διέρχονται μέχρι τῶν ἐγκάτων αὐτοῦ καί μέχρι τῶν χειρῶν αὐτοῦ καί ποδῶν καί μέχρι τῶν ὀπισθίων αὐτοῦ καί, πῦρ ὅλον ποιοῦσαι τόν πίνοντα, φλέγειν καί τήκειν τούς προσερχομένους αὐτῷ ἐχθρούς ἐκ πάντων τῶν μερῶν ἐνισχύσουσι, καί γίνεται ἀγαπητός τῷ φωτί τοῦ ἡλίου καί τῷ ἡλίῳ φίλος καί τῷ λευκολαμπεῖ οἴνῳ τῶν ἐξ αὐτῶν προεχεομένων ἀκτίνων δίκην υἱός ἠγαπημένος· ἡ γάρ πόσις αὐτοῦ τροφή καί κάθαρσις ῥύπου σεσηπότων σαρκῶν αὐτοῦ, καί ἡ κάθαρσις ὑγεία ὁλόκληρος αὐτῷ, καί ἡ ὑγεία οὐκ ἐᾷ αὐτόν ἕτερόν τι νοσοποιόν βρῶμα τραφῆναι, ἀλλά ἄπειρον καί διακαῆ ἐπιθυμίαν παρέχει αὐτῷ πίνειν ἐκ τοῦ οἴνου καί ἑαυτόν καθαίρειν μᾶλλον καί ὑγείαν ποιεῖσθαι τήν πόσιν. Τό γάρ κάλλος τῆς ὑγείας καί ἡ τερπνότης τῆς ὡραιότητος, τῆς ἐκ τῆς ὑγείας προσγινομένης, κόρον οὐκ ἔχει.
Οὕτως οὖν ἔσται, τέκνα ἠγαπημένα, υἱοί μου, περιποίητοί μου, οἱ ἀκούοντές μου τούς λόγους, πᾶς ὁ ἔναντι Κυρίου Θεοῦ Παντοκράτορος ἁμαρτήσας καί φόβου κρίσεως καί ἀποστροφῆς αὐτοῦ αἴσθησιν ἐν καρδίᾳ λαμβάνων. Φόβος γάρ Κυρίου καί αἴσθησις ἀνταποδόσεως αὐτοῦ δικαίας οὕτω σάρκα ἐκτήκει καί ὀστᾶ συντρίβει, (310) ὡς ἀπῃωρημένος λίθος ὑπό μηχανῆς τούς ἐν τῇ ληνῷ πατουμένους βότρυας ἐκθλίβει καί σφοδρῶς ἐκπιέζει. Τάς μέν γάρ σταφυλάς πρῶτον πατοῦντες οἱ ἄνθρωποι, ὕστερον αὐτάς πιέζουσιν ὑπό τοῦ λίθου καί πάσης ὑγρότητος αὐτάς χωρίς ἀποφαίνουσι, τόν δέ εἰσελθόντα ἄνθρωπον εἰς τόν φόβον τοῦ Θεοῦ αὐτός ὁ τοῦ Θεοῦ φόβος ποιεῖ αὐτόν γενέσθαι πᾶσιν ἀνθρώποις ἄλλοις εἰς καταπάτημα. Καί ὅτε καταλεάνῃ καί συντρίψει τελείως τό ὑπερήφανον καί κενόδοξον τῆς σαρκός αὐτοῦ φρόνημα, τότε ἡ ἁγία ταπείνωσις, ὁ νοητός λίθος ὁ ἐλαφρότατος καί χρηστός, ἐπιπεσών ἄνωθεν, πᾶσαν ὑγρότητα τῶν σαρκικῶν ἡδονῶν καί παθῶν ἐκπιέσασα, οὐκ ἄχρηστον τήν ἐκπιεσθεῖσαν ψυχήν ἀποδείκνυσιν, ἀλλά δάκρυα ποταμηδόν αὐτήν καταντλήσασα τό ζῶν ὕδωρ ἐκβλύζειν ποιεῖ καί τά ἐκ τῶν ἁμαρτημάτων τραύματα ἰᾶται καί τόν ἰχῶρα καί τά ἕλκη αὐτῶν ἀποπλύνει καί χιόνος λαμπρότερον ὅλον ἐκεῖνον ἀποδεικνύει τόν ἄνθρωπον.
Μακάριος οὖν ὁ ἄνθρωπος ἐκεῖνος, ὁ τούς λόγους τούτους ἀκούων καί δεχόμενος αὐτούς μετά πίστεως καί ποιῶν αὐτούς, ὅτι μεγάλα εὑρηκώς ἀγαθά, τά ὑπέρ νοῦν καί λόγον καί διάνοιαν ὄντα, μακαρίσει τήν ἀθλίαν μου χεῖρα, τήν ταῦτα γράψασαν, καί δοξάσει τόν ἐλεήμονα καί πολυέλεον Κύριον, τόν διά ῥυπαρᾶς
