God who made the heaven and the earth and all things, which I have forgotten to tell you, he himself will put it into your heart." After recounting these things, the emperor filled the assembly with tears. When the assembly was dismissed, Tiberius distributed gifts to his subjects and whatever was customary for imperial acclamations. Year of the world 6071. Year of the divine incarnation 571. Emperor of the Romans, Tiberius, for 4 years. 1st year. Emperor of the Persians, Hormisdas, for 15 years. 6th year. Bishop of Constantinople, Eutychius, for 4 years. 2nd year. Bishop of Jerusalem, John, for 20 years. 7th year. Bishop of Alexandria, John, for 11 years. 11th year. Bishop of Antioch, Gregory, for 24 years. 9th year. In this year, in the month of October, the 12th indiction, Tiberius became emperor, crowned by Eutychius the patriarch, as has been said before. He was also a Thracian by birth. When he became emperor, the factions cried out in the hippodrome: "Let us see, let us see the Augusta of the Romans." And he sent a message saying: "The one opposite the public bath of Dagisteus, which is called a church? The Augusta is her namesake." And the factions cried out: "Anastasia Augusta, tu vincas! Save, O Lord, those whom you have commanded to rule." And when Sophia, the wife of Justin, heard this, she was struck to the soul. For she wanted to take Tiberius and remain Augusta. For she did not know that he had a wife. And some said, 250 that even during Justin's lifetime she had grown fond of him, and she herself persuaded Justin to make him Caesar. But Tiberius sent for and brought Anastasia his wife, and the two daughters he had by her, Charito and Constantina. And he crowned her Augusta and distributed a great consular largesse. Bishop of Alexandria, Eulogius, for 27 years. 2nd. 7th. 3rd. 8th. 1st. 10th. In this year the emperor Tiberius built the palace in the harbor of Julian and named it after Sophia, the wife of Justin; and he installed her in it, having given her also cubicularii for her service, ordering that she be honored as his mother, and building a bath and every provision for her care. And he sent envoys to the king of the Persians according to custom, announcing his proclamation; and the king of the Persians did not accept the peace. Then Tiberius gathered great forces and by distributing the imperial treasures he made many armies, appointing a certain Justinian as general of the east; who, taking command of the forces, arrives at Dara. And the Persians also encamped near them, commanded by Tamchosroes. And when the battle line was drawn up, they came to terms and made a truce with one another, on the condition that for a period of three years both Romans and Persians should not ravage the east; but that the war should be directed toward Armenia. 3rd. 8th. 4th. 9th. 2nd. 11th. In this year the king of the Persians, taking his own forces, proceeds to Armenia. And when the Roman general heard that the king of the Persians was about to wage the war himself, he became unnerved; for fear entered the Roman people. For this reason Justinian, using words to the forces, made the fighting men cease from cowardice. And when the battle was joined, and the archery of the 251 Persians had become so great as to hide the rays of the sun, the Romans, having repelled the shots from the bows with their shields, began the hand-to-hand fight; and as the Roman battle-line was deep, the Persians could not bear it; and the multitude of the Babylonians is turned to flight, and great multitudes are slain. And they also capture the Persian camp and the royal tent and all the baggage, which was glorious. And the Romans also capture the elephants and send those renowned and royal spoils to Tiberius. Therefore the king of the Persians, unable to bear the shame, legislates that no longer should a king of the Persians go out to war. And the Roman army followed up on the Persian disasters and advanced into the interior of Persia and has made many captives and conquests in Persia, having reached
