it was; but since you have chosen, what you now demand is not in your power but in mine; and it is necessary for you, the subjects, 6.6. to keep quiet, and for me as emperor to consider what must be done.” And having addressed them thus at that time, he did not yield to the soldiers; but not long after, having arrived in Constantinople, he proclaimed his brother emperor, and of the subject territory, he handed over to him the parts towards the rising sun, and he placed under himself the parts from the Illyrians to the western ocean and all the opposite continent as far as 6.6.10 the furthest parts of Libya. Both became Christian in religion, but different in opinion and character. For Valens, having used the bishop Eudoxius as his initiator when he was baptized, zealously followed the faith of Arius, and he considered it a terrible thing not to compel everyone to be of the same opinion as him. But Valentinian, holding the same views as those who had assembled at Nicaea, benefited them, but he did not trouble those who held other opinions. 6.7.1 When he departed from Constantinople for Rome, traveling through Thrace, then the bishops around the Hellespont and Bithynia and all others who deemed it right to say the Son is consubstantial with the Father, put forward Hypatianus, the bishop of Heraclea in Perinthus, to be an envoy on their behalf, 6.7.2 so that they might be permitted to assemble for the correction of the dogma. And after deliberating for two months, they finally decreed that the things done in Constantinople through the efforts of 6.7.4 the party of Eudoxius and Acacius were invalid, and also that the exposition of the faith, which they had brought forward as being from the western bishops and had induced some to sign on the promise of renouncing the "unlike in substance" (which they falsified), should be void, and that the belief that the Son is "like the Father in substance" should prevail; for the addition of "like" was necessary on account of the meaning of the hypostases; 6.7.5 and that the faith confessed at Seleucia, which had been set forth at the dedication of the church in Antioch, should be established throughout every church; and that those who had been deposed by those who say the Son is "unlike the Father" should receive back their own thrones, as having been unlawfully expelled from the churches; 6.7.6 and if anyone wishes to accuse them, he should do so at equal risk; and that the judges should be the bishops of orthodox opinion in the province and from the neighboring provinces, assembling in the church where there are witnesses to the life of each. 6.7.7 Having decreed these things, since they had summoned the party of Eudoxius and had offered them a chance for repentance, but they did not obey, they made known their decisions to the churches everywhere. 6.7.8 And considering that Eudoxius would likely win the palace over to his own party and slander them, they decided to be first and report what had been done at Lampsacus. Which indeed they did, meeting the emperor Valens at Heraclea as he was returning from Thrace; for he had accompanied his brother for a certain distance as he was journeying 6.7. to the elder Rome. But matters concerning the emperor and his court were already being managed according to the mind of Eudoxius. Therefore, when the envoys from Lampsacus approached, he exhorted them not to be at variance with Eudoxius. But when they opposed him and blamed Eudoxius for the deceit that had occurred in Constantinople and for the schemes against the decrees of Seleucia, he was moved to anger and ordered them to live in exile, and the churches to be handed over to the party of Eudoxius. 6.7.10 At this time he took possession of Syria; for he was suspicious that the Persians might break the thirty-year treaty made under Jovian. And since they were making no new moves, he stayed in Antioch, at which time he indeed condemned Meletius the bishop to exile, but respecting the life of Paulinus, he spared him, and the
