of peace in the Lord, I pray.” This also to Novatus. He also wrote an epistle on repentance to those in Egypt, in which he sets forth what he had decided about those who had fallen, having described the classes of offenses. 6.46.2 And to Colon—he was bishop of the parish of Hermopolis—there is a separate writing of his on repentance, and another hortatory letter to his own flock at Alexandria. Among these is also the one written to Origen on martyrdom; and to the brethren in Laodicea, over whom Thelymidres presided as bishop, he likewise writes an epistle on repentance to those in Armenia, whom Meruzanes oversaw as bishop. 6.46.3 In addition to all these, he writes also to Cornelius of Rome, having received his letter against Novatus, to whom he also indicates, declaring that he had been requested by Helenus, the bishop in Tarsus of Cilicia, and the rest with him, Firmilianus in Cappadocia and Theoctistus in Palestine, to come to the synod at Antioch, where some were attempting to establish the schism of Novatus. 6.46.4 In addition to this he writes that it was reported to him that Fabius had fallen asleep, and that Demetrianus had been appointed successor to the episcopate of Antioch; he also writes about the one in Jerusalem, saying in these very words: “For the wonderful Alexander, being in prison, blessedly fell asleep.” 6.46.5 After this, another letter of Dionysius to those in Rome is extant, a diaconal one through Hippolytus. He also composed another for the same people on peace, and likewise on repentance, and again another to the confessors there, who still held to the opinion of Novatus. And he wrote two other letters to these same people after they had returned to the Church. And having communicated in like manner through letters with many others, he has left varied benefits for those who even now take pains with his writings. 7.pin.t G The seventh book of the Ecclesiastical History also contains the following: 7.pin.1 A On the wickedness of Decius and Gallus. B The bishops of the Romans at that time. C How Cyprian with the bishops with him first decreed that those turning from heretical error must be purified by baptism. D How many epistles Dionysius composed on this subject. E On the peace after the persecution. On the heresy of Sabellius. G On the utterly abominable error of the heretics and the God-sent vision of Dionysius and the ecclesiastical canon he received. H On the heterodoxy of Novatus.
