For these reasons, on the first of the month Hekatombaion, he summoned the patriarch and called the bishops and clergy, with the members of the senate also present, and with monks and citizens having gathered, the emperor put the despot on trial; standing up to make his defense against him, he said many things and tried to escape the accusation, but in the end he was condemned and was confined in the Great Palace on the thirteenth of Kronios, he and his wife and children, whom he had begotten from the daughter of Terter. But Athanasius of Alexandria, although often urged by the emperor himself, held fast to his opinion and did not yield at all nor consent to the accord. For which reason, and because it seemed that for these reasons he did not even commemorate the emperor himself, they themselves wanted to cut out the commemoration of the Patriarch of Alexandria from the diptychs, considering it a terrible thing if he would not receive them at all, so to speak, while they still thought him worthy and commemorated him. For the time being, alleging many other things out of spite, and thus awaiting a change of his opinion, they for their part considered it improper to proceed immediately with the excision of his name, as it was otherwise absurd, without a worthy cause appearing openly on a point of dogma, to cast out the name of a patriarch, lest some prey might be scared away and they might give 410 handles to the schismatics for condemnation. They thought it wiser to act and to still manage things, with the intention of cutting him out immediately, if he still held out and would not accept the action concerning Athanasius. The arrangement was something like this: that the patriarch himself should not celebrate the liturgy at all, so that, as the deacons would naturally not be co-celebrating, the Patriarch of Alexandria would not be commemorated in the diptychs, and that priests alone should celebrate the holy rites without deacons. And this was done both in the palace and in the greatest church, on other days, but especially on public and feast days, as also on the crowded feast of Orthodoxy, when, the emperor being present and a sufficient crowd having gathered, the patriarch was inactive, while a priest alone, completely without resounding chants and inaudibly, with no one hearing anything because of the noise, performed the sacred rites. And it happened likewise during the Paschal season. But later, on the commemoration of the renowned martyr George, they also cut out the commemoration, having celebrated the liturgy in the church in the Mangana district, which is dedicated to the martyr.
21. And the danger from the Persians increased daily and again, so that the hopes of safety were shut off everywhere. For what of the difficulties was absent? And I omit things far away. But these things were at our door and in the suburbs of the queen of cities. And they were right there for one disembarking from a ship 411 after crossing the straits of the Bosphorus, so that having left the sea one encountered danger. For they ran freely everywhere on the other side, and pitched camp wherever they wished, and this not campaigning in squadrons but in disarray and in small groups, so that the land opposite Byzantium lay a Scythian wasteland, as it is called, with no one daring to appear, except when it happened that some acted more rashly and dared to sally forth, persuaded by some zeal or rather pressed by want, as time was spent and the provisions they had brought from home were consumed by them.
