remained with the poor. But a certain Ishmael, after two months, being persuaded by the king of the Ammonites, along with some others, came to Mizpah, and killed Gedaliah and the Chaldeans and Jews who were with him; among them he also killed 80 men from Samaria and the rest of Judea who were mourning the capture of the temple and bringing offerings; But a certain Johanan, taking the remnant of the Jews, though Jeremiah tried to prevent him, and Jeremiah against his will, fled with them to Vaphres, the king of the Egyptians; where again Jeremiah prophesies to them the things concerning the final capture and destruction that would come upon them along with the Egyptians by the Chaldeans, which also happened in the 28th year of Nebuchadnezzar, from which to the first year of Cyrus 40 years are completed, according to the prophecy of Ezekiel. These, having practiced idolatry in Egypt and being reproved by the great Jeremiah, stoned him. The years of this complete captivity and burning are numbered from this point, that is, from the 11th year of Zedekiah, and of the world 4003. And according to the precise account, from the 20th year of Nebuchadnezzar until the 269 1st year of the reign of Cyrus, the years are as follows: Nebuchadnezzar, the remaining 24 years; for he reigned 43 years in all over the Chaldeans, and from his 19th year he also reigned over the Jews; the remaining years are 24. After him his son, called Evil-Merodach, reigned for 2 years after the death of his father Nebuchadnezzar, as Alexander and Abydenus, who wrote the Chaldean histories, testify, whom Josephus and all others follow in these matters, with which the divine scripture also agrees. This Evil-Merodach, because of his great lawlessness and licentiousness in his affairs, was killed by Neriglissar, his brother-in-law, who succeeded him and reigned for 4 years over the Chaldeans and Jews and the rest. After him they say his son Laborosoarchod held power for 9 months, and was conspired against by his friends because of his evil ways. But the divine scriptures make no mention of him, nor do most place him in the chronological canons; others count his time together with the years of his father Neriglissar, summing them up to 5 instead of 4. After him, those who conspired against him, by common consent, gave the kingdom to one of their conspiracy, Nabonnedus, who was called Assuerus Darius and also Astyages, in whose 17th year of his reign, Cyrus, having come out of Persia with a great force and having seized all the rest of the empire by war, besieged Astyages himself, who after a fierce battle had fled to Babylon, which had been fortified by him with much baked brick and asphalt, captured him and tore down the walls, treating him humanely and giving him the land of Carmania as a dwelling place. These things, says Josephus, also have the truth in agreement with our books; for it is written in them that Nebuchadnezzar in the 18th year of his reign laid waste our temple, and it was desolate for 50 years. and in the second year of the reign of Cyrus its foundations were laid, and it was completed in the 6th of the reign of Darius. Therefore, from the 19th year of Nebuchadnezzar there are 25 years. Of Evil-Merodach his son, 2 years. Of Neriglissar his son-in-law, 5 years, including the 9 months of his child. 270 Of Nabonnedus, also called Assuerus Darius and Astyages, 17 years. Of Cyrus, 1st year, in which also the first release occurred. Altogether 50 years. Eusebius, however, listed Astyages from this time of Zedekiah as having reigned over the Medes for 38 years, that is from the 12th year of Nebuchadnezzar until the 5th year of Neriglissar; counting this 5th year as the first year of the reign of Cyrus in his canon, and the 31st year of the captivity under Zedekiah, and not at all counting the 17 years of Darius Astyages, which other ecclesiastical historians have also done, then he listed 30 years for Cyrus, and after him 8 years for Cambyses, then 7 months for the 2 Magi brothers, and the 1st year of Darius Hystaspes. This makes a total of 70 years from the 4th year of Zedekiah.
