the seats of those who sold doves. And he said to them: It is written, 'My house shall be called a house of prayer'; but you have made it a den of thieves. Do you not have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the Church of God? Shall I praise you? In this I do not praise you. A sign of piety is to make continuous remembrance of the more divine places, and to propitiate God with frequent supplications. For God wills that men should be anchored in the harbors of the holy houses. The altar is a heavenly table, receiving things from earth, and sending them to heaven; receiving things from heaven, and bestowing them on the earth; established on earth, and set beside the throne above. For the altar is awesome to the angels themselves, who fly over the heavenly vault. From his side, therefore, Christ created the Church, just as from Adam's side he made Eve. For this reason Paul says: 'We are of his flesh and of his bones,' alluding to the side. For just as then God took the side, and formed the woman, so he gave us blood and water from his side, and reformed the Church. And just as then he took the side while Adam was sleeping in a trance, so also now after death he has given the blood and the water, and what was then a trance, is now death. Just as harbors in the sea, so God has established the churches in the cities, so that fleeing here from the storm of worldly affairs, we may enjoy calm. For having taken refuge here, there is no need to fear an onslaught of waves, nor an attack of evildoers, nor the violence of winds, nor the assaults of wild beasts. For it is a harbor free from all these things. The Church, therefore, is a harbor of souls. For through 95.1436 this all the wild beasts were subdued, as by some divine incantation, the hearing of the divine Scriptures entering through the ear of each to the soul, and calming these irrational passions. Do not stay away from the Church; nothing is stronger than the Church. It is stronger than the rock, it is higher than heaven, it is broader than the earth. For he whom the things above and the things below did not contain, a womb was not straitened to contain. It never grows old, but is always flourishing. Why did the Scripture call it a mountain? Because of its immovability. And it calls it a rock, because of its incorruptibility.

TITLE. 7. -Concerning prayer; and how many things are accomplished for you through prayer. Moses went out from Pharaoh, outside the city, and stretched out his hands

to the Lord, and the thunder and the hail ceased. Samson cried to the Lord and said: Lord, remember me just this once, and I will take one revenge for my two eyes on the Philistines. And Samson took hold of the two middle pillars on which the house was supported, and said: Let my soul die with the Philistines. And the house fell, and he killed more than he had killed in his life. Hezekiah the king prayed, and the Lord sent an angel, and wiped out every mighty man, and warrior, and commander, and general in the camp of the king of Assyria. The Lord spoke against Manasseh, and they captured Manasseh, and bound him in fetters, and brought him to Babylon. And he prayed to him, and he heard his cry. Schol. It is related by Africanus that while Manasseh was singing a hymn, his bonds, being of iron, burst, and he escaped. Elijah cried to heaven and said: Lord God of Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, hear me by fire; and fire fell from the Lord out of heaven, and consumed the burnt offering and the pieces of wood, and the stones, and the dust, and the fire licked up the water that was in the sea. The servant of Elisha rose early, and behold, a force was surrounding the city, both horses and chariots. And the young man said to him: What shall we do? And Elisha said: Do not be afraid, because those who are with us are more. And Elisha prayed and said: Lord, open the eyes of the young man; and
