always carrying these on his lips. (313) He carries them, therefore, as in an ark, in the memory of the soul, which holds the commandments of God like precious stones, in which exists eternal life - for the words of Christ are light and are life, as he himself says: "He who disobeys the Son shall not see life," and with the commandments, the virtues as pearls. For from the commandments come the virtues, and from these, the revelation of the mysteries, which are hidden and concealed in the letter. For through the fulfillment of the commandments comes the practice of the virtues, and through the practice of the virtues, the fulfillment of the commandments comes to be, and thus through these is opened to us the door of knowledge, or rather, not through these, but through him who said: "He who loves me will keep my commandments, and my Father will love him, and I will manifest myself to him." When, therefore, God dwells and walks within us and manifests himself to us perceptibly, then we also see with knowledge the divine mysteries hidden in the ark, that is, in the divine Scripture. Otherwise it is not possible, let no one be deceived, for the ark of knowledge to be opened and to enjoy the good things within it or to come into participation and contemplation of them. And what sort of good things do I mean? Perfect love, that is, for God and neighbor, contempt for all visible things, the mortification of the flesh and its members that are on the earth, even to evil desire, so that just as a dead person does not at all reason (314) nor perceive anything, so also we ourselves may never conceive any thought of evil desire or passionate sensation at all, or perceive the evil of tyrannical vexation, but only remember the commandments of the Savior Christ; and further, of immortality, incorruptibility, eternal glory, everlasting life, the kingdom of heaven, adoption through the regeneration of the Holy Spirit, and our becoming gods by position and grace, and being named heirs of God, and co-heirs with Christ, and along with these to acquire the mind of Christ and through it to see God and Christ himself dwelling according to his Divinity and walking perceptibly within us.
Therefore, those who hear the commandments of God and do them are deemed worthy of and richly enjoy all these things and the ineffable and inexpressible things beyond them, through the opening of the ark of which we spoke, that is, through the revelation of the noetic eyes and the vision of the things hidden in the divine Scripture. But the others, having ignorance and inexperience of all that has been said, are without taste of their sweetness, of their immortal life, relying only on the study of the Scriptures; for whom this will be more condemning and judging at their departure than for those who have not heard the Scriptures at all. For some of these, wandering out of ignorance, distort all the divine Scriptures, reinterpreting them according to their own passionate desires, wanting to convince themselves that they are going to be saved even without the (315) strict observance of Christ's commandments, denying altogether the power of the holy Scriptures.
And rightly so; for the things sealed and closed, the things unseen and unknown to all men, but opened by the Holy Spirit alone and thus revealed, becoming visible and known to us, how then will they ever be able to know or understand or even in some way conceive them, those who say they have never known the presence of the Holy Spirit, the illumination, the enlightenment, its indwelling in them? How can they attain comprehension of such mysteries, those who have never at all perceived within themselves the recasting, the renewal, the alteration, the remodeling, the regeneration by him? And those who have not yet been baptized in the Holy Spirit, how can they know the alteration of those baptized in it? Those not
