But Philippicus, being sick, arrived in Constantinople, and the troops returned unharmed to their own territories. But the general exhorted the Romans not to ruin the labors of the farmers, so that the justice of God, which hates evil, might not transfer the victory to the barbarians. So on the following day the general sent two phylarchs of the Saracens, and they captured Persians alive, through whom they learned the movements of the enemy; who said that the barbarians wanted to attack the Romans on the Lord's day. And Philippicus, having drawn up the Romans in three phalanxes from early morning, went forth to war. And he himself, taking up the theandric image, which the Romans glorify as not made by human hands, running through the
