by the word, that he might present the church to himself in glory, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that it might be holy and without blemish. So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself. The governing part does not wish to be harsh to the subject. For this is true rule, that the ruler care for those under him, which has appeared in Christ, who sought not what was fitting for himself, but what was profitable for the Church. For his glory was in immortality, and this was both due and fitting; but the salvation of the Church was in the cleansing of sin, which did not happen simply, unless Christ wrought a transformation of the defiled life, destroying its likeness by death, so that by dying with him we might be released from the life we were living. And the cause of this cleansing is holy baptism. For to that water is added the invocation through the word, rendering it holy. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church. Because we are members of his body, 95.852 of his flesh and of his bones. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. If the wife is the flesh of the husband, let him care for her, it says, as flesh; and if we know Christ as being the husband of the Church, and having made us members of himself through the life in the Spirit, let them imitate the love of Christ toward the Church. This mystery is great; but I speak in reference to Christ and the Church. He joined the spiritual to the carnal, showing this to be a type of that. For thus it becomes a mystery with the truth hidden in the type, that the taking of the woman from the man, and her union with the man, was a type of Christ and the Church. For from Christ we have our being according to holiness, and having been sanctified, we are united to Christ. Nevertheless, let each one of you individually so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she fears her husband. CHAPTER 6. Children, obey your parents in the Lord. For this is right. The saying, therefore, is universal for the whole Church united to Christ. But let the type be perfected in each woman and in each man, in the love of the husband, and the submission of the wife in fear. Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise, that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth. And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord. A second principle, that concerning children, since childbearing is also second after marriage, and he introduces the law as a witness. For all that we do through Christ is witnessed by the law to be both good and just, either being spoken literally or shown typically, and the pedagogical testimony of the perfect teaching is good. But showing that the commandment concerning parents is honorable, he says that it was spoken both first and with a promise, which promise is found in the Decalogue. For the law imitates a type of eternal life with long life. But God joined this promise to the first commandment, introducing four others that pertain to God; because of the honors directed to him, the recompense from the one who is honored is manifest. But the honor toward parents, not having a recompense worthy of mention from them, received this from God through a promise. 95.853 Slaves, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, in simplicity of your heart, as to Christ, not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, with goodwill serving the Lord, and not men. Knowing that whatever good anyone does, this he will receive from the Lord, whether he is a slave or free. And you, masters, do the same things to them, giving up threatening, knowing that your own Master also is in heaven, and
