and the things at the synod of Ariminum, whatever was done contrary to this aforementioned faith of the holy synod of the Nicaeans, to which, having been persuaded by deceit and perjury in Constantinople, brought from Nice in Thrace, we subscribed.” 6.11.4 Having confessed these things, they also annexed the faith set forth at Nicaea in the very same words to their own confession; and having received letters from Liberius concerning what had been done, they sailed to Sicily. 6.12.1 A synod having been held there also and the bishops there having decreed the same things, 6.12.2 when they had done these things, they returned. And at that time, while a synod was being held at Tyana by Eusebius the bishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia, and Athanasius of Ancyra, and Pelagius of Laodicea, and Zeno of Tyre, and Paul of Emesa, and Otreius of Melitene, and Gregory of Nazianzus, and many others, who had voted in Antioch during the reign of Jovian to uphold the homoousion, the letters of Liberius and of those throughout the West were read. 6.12.3 And becoming overjoyed at these things, they wrote to all the churches to study the decrees of the bishops throughout Asia and the letters of Liberius and of the Italians and Africans and Gauls of the West and Sicilians (for the envoys from Lampsacus brought their letters too), and to consider the number of them all; for by their great multitude they surpassed the synod at Ariminum; and to become of one mind and fellows with them, and to declare by their own writing that they are of this opinion, and to assemble at Tarsus in Cilicia while it was still spring, on a specified day which they appointed. 6.12.4 And thus they exhorted one another to assemble. But when the synod at Tarsus was about to convene, about thirty-four of the Asian bishops, having met at Antioch in Caria, praised the zeal for the concord of the churches, but they rejected the name homoousion, and insisted that the creed set forth at Antioch and Seleucia ought to hold, as being that of Lucian the martyr and having been tested by those before them with dangers and many toils. 6.12.5 But the emperor, at the instigation of Eudoxius, dissolved the anticipated synod in Cilicia, writing about this and adding a threat. In turn, he ordered the governors of the provinces to drive out from the churches the bishops who had been deposed under Constantius, and who had again taken up the priesthood during the reign of Julian. 6.12.6 From this command, zeal also arose among the authorities throughout Egypt to remove Athanasius from the churches there and to drive him out of the city. For no ordinary penalty was laid down in the emperor's letter, if these things were not done, condemning all alike, both governors and the soldiers under them and the senates, to the payment of much money and threatening bodily tortures. 6.12.7 But the multitude of Christians assembled and begged the prefect not to drive out the bishop recklessly, but to consider more carefully the terms of the emperor's letters, as applying only to those who returned under Julian after their exile under Constantius. 6.12.8 But Athanasius, they said, had fled under Constantius, but had been recalled by him and had received back his episcopate; and Julian, having brought back all, had persecuted him alone; and then again Jovian had recalled him. 6.12. Saying these things, they did not persuade him. Nevertheless they held out and did not permit him to be forced. But as the people were flocking together from all sides, and there was much noise and tumult throughout the city, and sedition was expected, the prefect informed 6.12.10 the emperor of what had happened, allowing him to remain in the city. And when many days had passed and the sedition that had been stirred up seemed to have ceased, in the evening Athanasius secretly went out of the city and hid himself in a certain country-place. 6.12.11 But late that same night the prefect of Egypt and the commander of the troops there seized the church, in which the
