thinking and saying to yourself: "Who am I, the lowly and unworthy one, that I have become one who sits and eats with these saints?" and thus saying these things in yourself, consider yourself from the soul only a sinner, and just as some poor man and one in rags, if he is found in the midst of rulers and rich men wearing splendid and costly robes, is ashamed and shrinks back and does not dare even to approach or draw near to any of them, so also you should be disposed toward all of them, always choosing the last place and being ashamed to be seen sitting above any of them (334), as they are all rich in virtues, while you are poor and naked and unworthy even to be with them and look at them at all. But indeed, when you are about to touch the food, consider these things again, remembering your sins, and say to yourself: "Will it not truly be for my judgment and condemnation, if I touch any of the things set before me? For the God who made these things and provided them for us as food, him have I disobeyed from my infancy and I have not kept his holy commandments; and how shall I, being unworthy and condemned, partake of his good things, like these holy fathers? With what face, being out of the sight of my Master, shall I, the wicked, ignorant, and ungrateful servant, before I repent and receive forgiveness completely from the man-loving God, eat and drink and rejoice with the saints myself, like those who have not sinned, or who have sinned but have repented and received forgiveness from there? By no means! But only that I may live will I both eat and drink, and I will waste myself away and grieve and condemn myself, so that God, looking down from above and seeing my distress and my voluntary affliction, may have mercy and forgive me my many evils." Reflect on these things, therefore, remember them continually!
In addition to this, establish a rule to eat only so much bread that you are not satiated, but much less than what is needed and as much as you can bear; likewise also to drink one or two cups, and these at one appointed hour of the day. And while you are eating, do not (335) listen to the thought that suggests to you to choose something of the things set before you and partake of it; but take care not to eat anything that seemed good to you, but eat only the things lying in front of you; but even from these, if there happens to be some fruit or some other of the edibles, and one of them appears pleasing to you and your thought says to you: "That one is good, take and eat it," strive not to be overcome nor to touch it. For Adam was cast out of paradise for no other reason than that the fruit of the plant appeared beautiful and good for food, and he ate of it; and for this reason he was rejected and cast out and condemned to death and corruption. Those, therefore, who wish to return to that paradise—or rather, to the kingdom of heaven—ought to keep self-control without any transgression even in these matters, so that they may not little by little fall into greater and harmful desires. If the brothers sitting with you urge you to eat or drink anything extra, answer nothing else to anyone, except by binding your hands and rising a little and bowing your head, say in a gentle voice: "Forgive me," and in this way always answer for all things, and neither offer anyone anything from your leftovers, nor take anything from anyone. If you do not drink wine, do not seek to receive it at all, but neither give it to any other of the brothers, unless perhaps he is from another place and has come to you for some need. Never agree to have a snack with anyone, nor to eat or drink in the evening, nor ever to have a late supper; for all evils are born from these, and these are the snares of the devil and his traps, which are seen as good, (336) but have the venom of death hidden in them, which he who trusts us will flee, and he who keeps our words, by the cooperation of the grace of God, remains unwounded and unharmed by them, but the rest, a worldly life, as

Ἀλλά γάρ μέλλων ἅψασθαι τῆς τροφῆς, αὖθις ταῦτα λογίζου μεμνημένος τάς ἁμαρτίας σου καί λέγε πρός ἑαυτόν· "Ἇρα γε οὐκ εἰς κρίμα μου καί κατάκριμα γένηται, εἰ ἅψομαι τῶν προκειμένων τινός; Τόν γάρ πεποιηκότα ταῦτα Θεόν καί εἰς βρῶσιν παρασχόντα ἡμῖν, τοῦτον ἐγώ νηπιόθεν παρήκουσα καί τάς ἁγίας αὐτοῦ ἐντολάς οὐκ ἐφύλαξα· καί πῶς τῶν ἀγαθῶν αὐτοῦ, ὡς οἱ πατέρες οὗτοι οἱ ἅγιοι, κἀγώ ἀνάξιος καί κατάδικος ὦν μεταλάβω; Ποίῳ προσώπῳ, ἀπό ὄψεως ὤν τοῦ ∆εσπότου μου, ὁ πονηρός δοῦλος ἐγώ καί ἀγνώμων καί ἀχάριστος, πρό τοῦ μετανοῆσαί με καί τήν συγχώρησιν παρά τοῦ φιλανθρώπου Θεοῦ τελείως λαβεῖν, ὡς οἱ μή ἁμαρτήσαντες ἤ καί ἡμαρτηκότες μέν, μετανοήσαντες δέ καί τήν συγχώρησιν ἐκεῖθεν λαβόντες, φάγωμαι καί αὐτός καί πίωμαι καί συνευφρανθήσομαι τοῖς ἁγίος; Οὐδαμῶς! Ἀλλά πρός τό ζῆν με μόνον καί φάγομαι καί πίομαι καί ἐμαυτόν ἐκτήξω καί λυπήσω καί κατακρινῶ, ἵνα ἐπιβλέψας ὁ θεός ἄνωθεν καί ἰδών τήν στενοχωρίαν καί τήν ἑκούσιόν μου θλῖψιν ἐλεήσῃ καί συγχωρήσῃ μοι τά πολλά μου κακά". Ταῦτα τοιγαροῦν ἐνθυμοῦ, τούτων διηνεκῶς μέμνησο!
Πρός τούτοις τύπωσον καί ψωμόν τοσοῦτον ἐσθίειν, ὅσον τοῦ μή χορτάζεσθαί σε, ἀλλά κατά πολύ τῆς χρείας ἔλαττον καί ὅσον δύνασαι βαστάσαι· ὡσαύτως καί ἕν ἤ δύο πίνειν καυκάλια καί ταῦτα ἐν μιᾷ τεταγμένῃ τῆς ἡμέρας ὥρᾳ. Ἐσθίοντός σου δέ μή (335) ὑπακούσῃς τῷ ὑποβάλλοντί σου λογισμῷ ἐκλέξασθαί τι τῶν προκειμένων κἀκείνου μεταλαβεῖν· ἀλλά φύλαξον μή φαγεῖν τι ὅπερ καλόν σοι ἐφάνη, μόνα δέ τά ἔμπροσθέν σου κείμενα ἔσθιε· ἀλλά καί ἐξ αὐτῶν ἐάν τύχῃ τυχόν ὀπώρα ἤ ἕτερά τινα τῶν ἐδωδίμων εἶναι καί ἀρεστόν φανῇ σοι ἕν ἐξ αὐτῶν καί εἴπῃ σοι ὁ λογισμός· "Καλόν ἐστιν ἐκεῖνο, λαβών φάγε αὐτό", σπούδασον μή ἡττηθῆναι μηδέ ἅψασθαι αὐτοῦ. ∆ι᾿ οὐδέν γάρ ἕτερον τοῦ παραδείσου ὁ Ἀδάμ ἐξεβλήθη, εἰ μή ὅτι ὡραῖος ἐφάνη καί καλός εἰς βρῶσιν ὁ καρπός τοῦ φυτοῦ, καί ἔφαγεν ἐξ αὐτοῦ· καί διά τοῦτο ἀπερρίφη καί ἐξεβλήθη καί θανάτῳ καί φθορᾷ κατεδικάσθη. Οἱ οὖν βουλόμενοι εἰς ἐκεῖνον τόν παράδεισον - μᾶλλον δέ εἰς τήν βασιλείαν τῶν οὐρανῶν ἐπανελθεῖν, τήν ἐγκράτειαν δίχα παραβάσεως πάσης καί μέχρι τούτων φυλάττειν ὀφείλουσιν, ἵνα μή κατά μικρόν καί εἰς μείζονας ἐπιθυμίας καί βλαβεράς περιπέσωσιν. Ἐάν προτρέπωνταί σε οἱ συγκαθήμενοι ἀδελφοί τοῦ φαγεῖν ἤ πιεῖν περισσόν τι, μηδέν ἕτερον ἀποκριθῇς τινι, εἰ μή τάς χεῖράς σου δήσας καί μικρόν τι διεγερθείς καί κλίνας τήν κεφαλήν, πραείᾳ λέγε φωνῇ· "Συγχώρησον", καί ἐπί πᾶσιν οὕτω πάντοτε ἀποκρίνου καί μήτε προτιμήσῃ τινά ἐκ τῶν περισσευμάτων σου, μήτε λάβῃς ἀπό τινός τι. Μή πίνοντός σου οἶνον, μή ἐπιζητήσῃς ὅλως λαβεῖν αὐτόν, ἀλλά μηδέ ἑτέρῳ τινί ἐκ τῶν ἀδελφῶν ἐπιδώσῃς, εἰ μή που ἀπό ξένης ἐστί καί ἦλθε πρός σέ διά χρείαν τινά. Μή καταδέξῃ ποτέ μετά τινος προγεύσασθαι, μηδέ ἐν δείλῃ φαγεῖν ἤ πιεῖν ἤ ἐπιδειπνῆσαί ποτε· πάντα γάρ τά κακά ἐκ τούτων τίκτονται, καί ταῦτά εἰσι τά ἔνεδρα τοῦ διαβόλου καί αἱ παγίδες αὐτοῦ, αἵτινες καθορῶνται μέν ὡς καλαί, (336) κεκρυμμένον δέ ἔχουσι τόν ἰόν τοῦ θανάτου ἐν αὐταῖς, ἅς ὁ πιστεύων ἡμῖν φεύξεται, καί ὁ φυλάσσων τούς λόγους ἡμῶν, τῇ συνεργείᾳ τῆς τοῦ Θεοῦ χάριτος, ἄτρωτος καί ἀβλαβής διαμένει ἐξ αὐτῶν, οἱ δέ γε λοιποί κοσμικόν βίον, ὡς
