without falsehood; for whenever in hunger and thirst, in exiles and imprisonments, in irons on the foot and isolations, in seizures of possessions and persecutions, in sojourns in desert dwellings, in mountains and in caves according to what is written (and I do not yet speak of the sheddings of blood through scourgings), how are these things not martyrdoms? How many are the crowned ones? Lift up the eyes of your mind all around, O most blessed one, and see all things and beyond these, and from your own contest confirming the word. But nevertheless, conquering, conquer, O thrice-longed for, whatever things may be brought and will be brought against you, so that the monastic state may have you as a crown, and the whole church of Christ may recognize you as a crowned confessor, and we, the least, may receive an ornament of seemliness. 160 {1To a friend, from a friend}1 There is a season for me to write, but for remembering your good love, every season; and this is not a gift, but according to debt, not only because of the care which you showed to us (which who, having learned of it, would not admire, being a fulfillment of that commandment, that one should lay down his soul for his friend?), but also because of your good character; for as fragrance follows ointment, so also grace and loveliness follow your honor. and this is not an empty word; for who, having seen you, was not pleased, and who, having experienced you, was not wounded with friendship? I learn that even by hearsay you have captivated someone, so that he wishes to become your kinsman by marriage. And indeed what is more remarkable: for they say that having entered a bath naked, he was sought as a son-in-law, nothing else being sought after on account of the great wealth of the one being invited. and reasonably so; for he who is clothed in virtue is richer than all, as they narrate somewhere that Odysseus, having been saved naked from a shipwreck, said these things. See, I have not been mistaken in the things behind; but when I learned that you were also promoted to the office of the comitatus, I rejoiced, but not much (for a tourmarch's command is a small thing for your piety and dexterity), but I was grieved that you are moving far away; nevertheless with the wing of a letter it is possible to fly and be joined to one another. Guard for me, therefore, O good child, if you would not be displeased to hear it, the deposit of the orthodox faith and communion; remembering me equally, may you be saved in the Lord always. 161 {1To the sisters Irene and Kale}1 That your honorable pair has been comforted from your brotherly suffering, thanks be to the God who comforts. For the letter-carrier has made this known, who also brought to us the things sent by you; which, when we saw them, we seemed to behold that blessed man and to speak to him. and so we have them as an unforgettable memorial of him; may God give him rest also with the saints, whose portion he chose while living, and may He also give you the reward, for striving on behalf of a true brother through such beneficence, sending up his due portion in the age to come, who even while still living laid aside the inviolable inheritance. But why is it that you also, having chosen the same life of virginity, leave nothing for the world, treasuring up all things for God, and also holding to orthodoxy? blessed be your trinity, and blessed also the pair that brought you into the light; good is your understanding, blessed is your practice. Pray for me, holy women. 162 {1To Sergius, consul and cousin}1 It is not when I write that I remember your love, my most genuine blood, but also always taking you up in my sinful prayer I do not lie; for I love you not only as a kinsman, but also as one of like mind and above all relatives endeared to my humility, and not only that but also as one who loves conversation, as you yourself can surmise from your own self, since in a way each person possesses in himself a mirror of love for his neighbor. But the time has separated us, as you know; but just as I pray that you be kept unharmed and without part in the Christ-fighting heresy, so also you yourself pray exceedingly, dearest one, that I the sinner be kept safe from all harm. But what do you see in the affairs of Byzantium? Has an orthodox seed been left, or have all turned aside and together become worthless? Does anyone groan over the capture, or is there, as in the time of Noah, an insensible indifference, of those whom heavenly water overwhelmed? Is there then even from
