And hearing these things, the emperor Zeno arrested the patrician Pelagius, from the silentiaries, who had completed his service and attained the rank of patrician, a wise man; having confiscated his property, he ordered him to be guarded; whom the guards strangled at night and threw his remains into the sea, by order of the emperor. And hearing this, the praetorian prefect Arcadius reviled the emperor Zeno because of Pelagius; and it came to the ears of Zeno, and he ordered him to be slaughtered upon entering the palace. But Arcadius, learning this, when he was summoned by the emperor, passing by the church, pretended that he wanted to pray; and getting down from his carriage, he entered the great church of Constantinople; and he remained inside, and was saved from death. And while he was there, the emperor Zeno confiscated his property. 391 After a short time, the same emperor Zeno, seized by dysentery, died, being 60 years and 9 months old, on the 9th of the month Xanthicus, in the year 539 according to the Antiochene era, of the 14th indiction. And after the reign of Zeno, the most divine Anastasius, the one with different-colored pupils, the Dyrrachian, from New Epirus, from the silentiaries, reigned, during the consulship of Olybrius, the son of Areobindus; who reigned for 27 years and 3 months, being crowned in the month of April on the holy fifth day of the great week. And he married Ariadne, who had been the wife of Zeno who had reigned before him.
