entwining yourself, as it were, with their soul and offering your whole self to them with intention through love, being assured that from serving them you will reap sanctification.
But if you also sit down in it with everyone, see what I command you in the Lord, as my beloved father and brother, do not rashly stretch out your hand (333) to the foods set on the table before the older of your brothers have begun to eat, before the blessing is given from on high by the priest. And having begun to eat with your fathers and brothers, attend to yourself alone, sitting in all modesty and silence, not speaking at all to anyone but paying attention to the reading and being nourished, just as the body, so also the soul from the divinely inspired oracles of the Spirit. For it is necessary for you, being twofold, of soul I say and body, to have food and a table in two corresponding ways, and to nourish the body, which is perceptible and earthly, with perceptible foods from the earth, but to nourish the soul, which is intellectual and divine, with the intellectual and divine delicacies of the words.
Therefore do not examine the portions set before you on the table, whether one happens to be larger or very small, but whatever is given to you, receiving it with all thanksgiving, eat, and this with self-control, fleeing from satiety in all things, evidently considering yourself unworthy of the common table of the brothers and considering such things in yourself and saying to yourself: "Who am I, the insignificant and unworthy one, that I have become a fellow-sitter and table-companion with these holy men?" and so saying these things to yourself, have yourself only in your soul as a sinner, and just as some poor man in ragged clothes, if he is found in the midst of rulers and rich men wearing splendid and costly robes, is ashamed and shrinks back and does not dare even to approach or draw near to any of them, so also should you be disposed towards all of them, always choosing the last place and being ashamed to be seen sitting above any of them (334), since they are all rich in virtues, while you are poor and naked and unworthy even to be with them and see them at all. But when you are about to touch the food, again consider these things, remembering your sins, and say to yourself: "Will it not truly be to my judgment and condemnation, if I touch any of the things set before me? For the God who made these things and gave them to us for food, Him I have disobeyed from childhood and have not kept His holy commandments; and how shall I, being unworthy and condemned, partake of His good things, like these holy fathers? With what face, being out of the sight of my Master, shall I, the wicked, ungrateful, and unthankful servant, before I have repented and fully received forgiveness from the man-loving God, like those who have not sinned or who, having sinned, have repented and received forgiveness from Him, shall I myself also eat and drink and rejoice with the holy ones? By no means! But only in order to live shall I eat and drink, and I will waste away and grieve and condemn myself, so that God, looking down from on high and seeing my distress and my voluntary affliction, may have mercy and forgive me my many evils." Therefore, consider these things, remember these things continually!
In addition to this, make it a rule to eat only so much bread as not to be satisfied, but much less than what is needed and as much as you can bear; likewise also to drink one or two cups, and this at one appointed hour of the day. And while you are eating, do not (335) obey the thought that suggests to you to choose one of the things set before you and partake of it; but take care not to eat anything that seemed good to you, but eat only the things lying in front of you; but also if among these there should happen to be fruit or some other edible things and one of them seems pleasing to you and the thought says to you: "That one is good, take it and eat it," strive not to be defeated

Εἰ δέ καθεσθῇς ἐν αὐτῇ μετά πάντων καί σύ, ὅρα τί σοι ἐν Κυρίῳ ἐντέλλομαι, ὡς ἀγαπητῷ πατρί μου καί ἀδελφῷ, μή προπετῶς ἐκτείνῃς τήν χείρά σου (333) ἐπί τοῖς παρακειμένοις βρώμασι τῇ τραπέζῃ πρό τοῦ ἐνάρξασθαι τούς παλαιοτέρους ἐσθίειν τῶν ἀδελφῶν σου, πρό τοῦ δοθῆναι τήν εὐλογίαν ἄνωθεν παρά τοῦ ἱερέως. Καί ἀρξάμενος συνεσθίειν τοῖς πατράσι καί ἀδελφοῖς σου, πρόσεχε σεαυτῷ καί μόνῳ ἐν συστολῇ πάσῃ καί σιωπῇ καθεζόμενος, μή ὁμιλῶν καθόλου τινί ἀλλά προσέχων τῇ ἀναγνώσει καί τρεφόμενος, ὥσπερ τό σῶμα, οὕτω καί τήν ψυχήν ἐκ τῶν θεοπνεύστων λογίων τοῦ Πνεύματος. ∆εῖ γάρ σε διπλοῦν ὄντα, ἐκ ψυχῆς λέγω καί σώματος, δισσῶς καί καταλλήλως ἔχειν τήν τροφήν καί τήν τράπεζαν, καί τό μέν σῶμα αἰσθητόν ἔχοντα καί γήϊνον αἰσθητοῖς καί τοῖς ἀπό γῆς τρέφειν βρώμασι, τήν δέ ψυχήν νοεράν καί θείαν ἐπιφερόμενον νοητοῖς τρέφειν καί θείοις τῶν λόγων ἐδέσμασι.
Μή οὖν περιεργάζου τά παρατιθέμενά σοι μέρη ἐν τῇ τραπέζῃ, ποῖον τυχόν μεῖζον ἤ βραχύτατόν ἐστιν, ἀλλ᾿ οἷον δοθῇ σοι μετ᾿ εὐχαριστίας πάσης δεξάμενος φάγε, καί τοῦτο μετ᾿ ἐγκρατείας, φεύγων ἐν πᾶσιν τόν κόρον, ἀνάξιον ἑαυτόν δηλονότι λογιζόμενος τῆς κοινῆς τραπέζης τῶν ἀδελφῶν καί τοιαῦτα καθ᾿ ἑαυτόν ἐνθυμούμενος καί λέγων πρός ἑαυτόν· "Τίς εἰμι ἐγώ, ὁ εὐτελής καί ἀνάξιος, ὅτι μετά τῶν ἁγίων τούτων συγκάθεδρος καί συνέστιος γέγονα;" καί οὕτω ταῦτα λέγων ἐν ἑαυτῷ, ἔχε μόνον ἀπό ψυχῆς σεαυτόν ἁμαρτωλόν, καί καθάπερ πτωχός τις καί ῥακενδυτῶν, ἐάν μέσον ἀρχόντων καί πλουσίων λαμπράς καί πολυτελεῖς περιβεβηλημένων στολάς εὑρεθῇ, αἰσχύνεται καί συστέλλεται καί οὐδέ προσεγγίσαι τινί αὐτῶν ἤ πλησιάσαι τολμᾷ, οὕτω καί σύ διάκεισο πρός πάντας αὐτούς, τόν ἔσχατον τόπον ἀεί ἐκλεγόμενος καί αἰσχυνόμενος ἐπάνω τινος αὐτῶν (334) τῶν ὁραθῆναι καθήμενος, ὡς ἐκείνων μέν πάντων πλουσίων ὄντων ταῖς ἀρεταῖς, σοῦ δέ πτωχοῦ καί γυμνοῦ ὑπάρχοντος καί ἀναξίου τοῦ καί ὅλως συνεῖναι καί βλέπειν αὐτούς. Ἀλλά γάρ μέλλων ἅψασθαι τῆς τροφῆς, αὖθις ταῦτα λογίζου μεμνημένος τάς ἁμαρτίας σου καί λέγε πρός ἑαυτόν· "Ἇρα γε οὐκ εἰς κρίμα μου καί κατάκριμα γένηται, εἰ ἅψομαι τῶν προκειμένων τινός; Τόν γάρ πεποιηκότα ταῦτα Θεόν καί εἰς βρῶσιν παρασχόντα ἡμῖν, τοῦτον ἐγώ νηπιόθεν παρήκουσα καί τάς ἁγίας αὐτοῦ ἐντολάς οὐκ ἐφύλαξα· καί πῶς τῶν ἀγαθῶν αὐτοῦ, ὡς οἱ πατέρες οὗτοι οἱ ἅγιοι, κἀγώ ἀνάξιος καί κατάδικος ὦν μεταλάβω; Ποίῳ προσώπῳ, ἀπό ὄψεως ὤν τοῦ ∆εσπότου μου, ὁ πονηρός δοῦλος ἐγώ καί ἀγνώμων καί ἀχάριστος, πρό τοῦ μετανοῆσαί με καί τήν συγχώρησιν παρά τοῦ φιλανθρώπου Θεοῦ τελείως λαβεῖν, ὡς οἱ μή ἁμαρτήσαντες ἤ καί ἡμαρτηκότες μέν, μετανοήσαντες δέ καί τήν συγχώρησιν ἐκεῖθεν λαβόντες, φάγωμαι καί αὐτός καί πίωμαι καί συνευφρανθήσομαι τοῖς ἁγίος; Οὐδαμῶς! Ἀλλά πρός τό ζῆν με μόνον καί φάγομαι καί πίομαι καί ἐμαυτόν ἐκτήξω καί λυπήσω καί κατακρινῶ, ἵνα ἐπιβλέψας ὁ θεός ἄνωθεν καί ἰδών τήν στενοχωρίαν καί τήν ἑκούσιόν μου θλῖψιν ἐλεήσῃ καί συγχωρήσῃ μοι τά πολλά μου κακά". Ταῦτα τοιγαροῦν ἐνθυμοῦ, τούτων διηνεκῶς μέμνησο!
Πρός τούτοις τύπωσον καί ψωμόν τοσοῦτον ἐσθίειν, ὅσον τοῦ μή χορτάζεσθαί σε, ἀλλά κατά πολύ τῆς χρείας ἔλαττον καί ὅσον δύνασαι βαστάσαι· ὡσαύτως καί ἕν ἤ δύο πίνειν καυκάλια καί ταῦτα ἐν μιᾷ τεταγμένῃ τῆς ἡμέρας ὥρᾳ. Ἐσθίοντός σου δέ μή (335) ὑπακούσῃς τῷ ὑποβάλλοντί σου λογισμῷ ἐκλέξασθαί τι τῶν προκειμένων κἀκείνου μεταλαβεῖν· ἀλλά φύλαξον μή φαγεῖν τι ὅπερ καλόν σοι ἐφάνη, μόνα δέ τά ἔμπροσθέν σου κείμενα ἔσθιε· ἀλλά καί ἐξ αὐτῶν ἐάν τύχῃ τυχόν ὀπώρα ἤ ἕτερά τινα τῶν ἐδωδίμων εἶναι καί ἀρεστόν φανῇ σοι ἕν ἐξ αὐτῶν καί εἴπῃ σοι ὁ λογισμός· "Καλόν ἐστιν ἐκεῖνο, λαβών φάγε αὐτό", σπούδασον μή ἡττηθῆναι
