For you have been commanded to reverence gods, and gods whom all know.” “Dionysius answered: “We worship no other.” 7.11.10 “Aemilianus, who was administering the prefecture, said to them: “I see that you are at once ungrateful and insensible to the clemency of our Augusti; therefore you shall not be in this city, but you shall be sent to the parts of Libya, and to a place called Cephro. For I have chosen this place at the command of our Augusti. And it shall not be permitted to you or to any others to hold assemblies, or to enter into what are called cemeteries. 7.11.11 And if anyone should appear not to have gone to this place which I have commanded, or if he should be found in any assembly, he will bring the peril upon himself. For the necessary chastisement will not be wanting. Depart, therefore, where you have been commanded.” “And although I was sick, he hastened me away, not giving a single day’s delay. What leisure, then, had I for holding an assembly or not holding one?” Then, after other things, he says: 7.11.12 “But we did not hold aloof from the visible assembly with the Lord, but I gathered together those in the city more diligently, as if I were present, absent in the body, as he said, but present in the spirit, and in Cephro also a large church sojourned with us, of the brethren from the city who followed us, and of those who came together from Egypt. 7.11.13 And there God opened for us a door for the word. And at first we were persecuted, we were stoned, but afterward not a few of the heathen, leaving their idols, turned to God. For the word was then first sown among them through us, who had not received it before, 7.11.14 and as if for this purpose God had brought us to them, when we had fulfilled this ministry, he led us away again. For Aemilianus desired to move us to harsher places, as it seemed, and more Libyan, and he commanded those from every direction to flock to the Mareotis, assigning to each district their own villages, but he stationed us more on the road and to be taken first. For it is clear that he was managing and preparing so that whenever he wished to seize us, he might have us all easy to capture. 7.11.15 “But when I was commanded to go to Cephro, I did not even know where the place was, having hardly even heard the name before, yet I went away cheerfully and calmly. But when it was announced to me that I was to move to the district of Colluthion, those who are present know how I was affected—for here I will accuse myself. 7.11.16 At first I was vexed and greatly annoyed. For although the places were better known and more familiar to us, they said the place was destitute of brethren and good men, and exposed to the annoyances of travelers and the incursions of robbers. 7.11.17 But I received comfort when the brethren reminded me that it was nearer the city, and while Cephro brought us much intercourse with the brethren from Egypt, so that we could hold church more widely, there, since the city was nearer, we would enjoy more frequently the sight of those who are truly beloved and our own and most dear. For they will arrive and will rest, and as in more distant suburbs there will be assemblies in different parts. And so it happened.” 7.11.18 And after other matters, concerning what happened to him, he again writes these things: “Germanus prides himself on many confessions, he has much to say that has happened to himself. Can he count as many condemnations against us, confiscations, proscriptions, seizures of goods, depositions from honors, disregard of worldly glory, contempt for the praises of governors and of councils, and their opposites, endurance of threats and outcries and dangers and persecutions and wandering and distress and various afflictions, such as happened to me under Decius and Sabinus, such as up to now under Aemilianus. 7.11.19 But where did Germanus appear? What then about

διέπων τὴν ἡγεμονίαν αὐτοῖς εἶπεν· «τίς γὰρ ὑμᾶς κωλύει καὶ τοῦτον, εἴπερ ἐστὶν θεός, μετὰ τῶν κατὰ φύσιν θεῶν προσκυνεῖν; θεοὺς γὰρ σέβειν ἐκελεύσθητε, καὶ θεοὺς οὓς πάντες ἴσασιν». «∆ιονύσιος ἀπεκρίνατο· «ἡμεῖς οὐδένα ἕτερον προσκυνοῦμεν». 7.11.10 «Αἰμιλιανὸς διέπων τὴν ἡγεμονίαν αὐτοῖς εἶπεν· «ὁρῶ ὑμᾶς ὁμοῦ καὶ ἀχαρίστους ὄντας καὶ ἀναισθήτους τῆς πρᾳότητος τῶν Σεβαστῶν ἡμῶν· δι' ὅπερ οὐκ ἔσεσθε ἐν τῇ πόλει ταύτῃ, ἀλλὰ ἀποσταλήσεσθε εἰς τὰ μέρη τῆς Λιβύης καὶ ἐν τόπῳ λεγομένῳ Κεφρώ· τοῦτον γὰρ τὸν τόπον ἐξελεξάμην ἐκ τῆς κελεύσεως τῶν Σεβαστῶν ἡμῶν. οὐδαμῶς δὲ ἐξέσται οὔτε ὑμῖν οὔτε ἄλλοις τισὶν ἢ συνόδους ποιεῖσθαι ἢ εἰς τὰ καλούμενα κοιμητήρια εἰσιέναι. 7.11.11 εἰ δέ τις φανείη ἢ μὴ γενόμενος εἰς τὸν τόπον τοῦτον ὃν ἐκέλευσα, ἢ ἐν συναγωγῇ τινι εὑρεθείη, ἑαυτῷ τὸν κίνδυνον ἐπαρτήσει· οὐ γὰρ ἐπιλείψει ἡ δέουσα ἐπιστρέφεια. ἀπόστητε οὖν ὅπου ἐκελεύσθητε». «καὶ νοσοῦντα δέ με κατήπειξεν, οὐδὲ μιᾶς ὑπέρθεσιν δοὺς ἡμέρας. ποίαν οὖν ἔτι τοῦ συνάγειν ἢ μὴ συνάγειν εἶχον σχολήν;» εἶτα μεθ' ἕτερά φησιν· 7.11.12 «ἀλλ' οὐδὲ τῆς αἰσθητῆς ἡμεῖς μετὰ τοῦ κυρίου συναγωγῆς ἀπέστημεν, ἀλλὰ τοὺς μὲν ἐν τῇ πόλει σπουδαιότερον συνεκρότουν ὡς συνών, ἀπὼν μὲν τῷ σώματι, ὡς εἶπεν, παρὼν δὲ τῷ πνεύματι, ἐν δὲ τῇ Κεφροῖ καὶ πολλὴ συνεπεδήμησεν ἡμῖν ἐκκλησία, τῶν μὲν ἀπὸ τῆς πόλεως ἀδελφῶν ἑπομένων, τῶν δὲ συνιόντων ἀπ' Αἰγύπτου. 7.11.13 κἀκεῖ θύραν ἡμῖν ὁ θεὸς ἀνέῳξεν τοῦ λόγου. καὶ τὸ μὲν πρῶτον ἐδιώχθημεν, ἐλιθοβολήθημεν, ὕστερον δέ τινες οὐκ ὀλίγοι τῶν ἐθνῶν τὰ εἴδωλα καταλιπόντες, ἐπέστρεψαν ἐπὶ τὸν θεόν· οὐ πρότερον δὲ παραδεξαμένοις αὐτοῖς τότε πρῶτον δι' ἡμῶν ὁ λόγος ἐπεσπάρη, 7.11.14 καὶ ὥσπερ τούτου ἕνεκεν ἀπαγαγὼν ἡμᾶς πρὸς αὐτοὺς ὁ θεός, ἐπεὶ τὴν διακονίαν ταύτην ἐπληρώσαμεν, πάλιν ἀπαγήοχεν. ὁ γὰρ Αἰμιλιανὸς εἰς τραχυτέρους μέν, ὡς ἐδόκει, καὶ λιβυκωτέρους ἡμᾶς μεταστῆσαι τόπους ἐβουλήθη, καὶ τοὺς πανταχόσε εἰς τὸν Μαρεώτην ἐκέλευσεν συρρεῖν, κώμας ἑκάστοις τῶν κατὰ χώραν ἀφορίσας, ἡμᾶς δὲ μᾶλλον ἐν ὁδῷ καὶ πρώτους καταληφθησομένους ἔταξεν. ᾠκονόμει γὰρ δῆλον ὅτι καὶ παρεσκεύαζεν ἵνα ὁπόταν βουληθείη συλλαβεῖν, πάντας εὐαλώτους ἔχοι. 7.11.15 «ἐγὼ δὲ ὅτε μὲν εἰς Κεφρὼ κεκελεύσμην ἀπελθεῖν, καὶ τὸν τόπον ἠγνόουν ὅποι ποτὲ οὗτός ἐστιν, οὐδὲ τὸ ὄνομα σχεδὸν πρότερον ἀκηκοώς, καὶ ὅμως εὐθύμως καὶ ἀταράχως ἀπῄειν· ἐπεὶ δὲ μετασκηνώσειν εἰς τὰ Κολλουθίωνος ἀπηγγέλη μοι, ἴσασιν οἱ παρόντες ὅπως διετέθην ἐνταῦθα γὰρ ἐμαυτοῦ κατηγορήσω, 7.11.16 τὸ μὲν πρῶτον ἠχθέσθην καὶ λίαν ἐχαλέπηνα· καὶ γὰρ εἰ γνωριμώτεροι καὶ συνηθέστεροι ἐτύγχανον ἡμῖν οἱ τόποι, ἀλλ' ἔρημον μὲν ἀδελφῶν καὶ σπουδαίων ἀνθρώπων ἔφασκον εἶναι τὸ χωρίον, ταῖς δὲ τῶν ὁδοιπορούντων ἐνοχλήσεσιν καὶ λῃστῶν καταδρομαῖς ἐκκείμενον· 7.11.17 ἔτυχον δὲ παραμυθίας, ὑπομνησάντων με τῶν ἀδελφῶν ὅτι γειτνιῴη μᾶλλον τῇ πόλει καὶ ἡ μὲν Κεφρὼ πολλὴν ἡμῖν ἦγεν ἀδελφῶν τῶν ἀπ' Αἰγύπτου τὴν ἐπιμιξίαν, ὡς πλατύτερον ἐκκλησιάζειν δύνασθαι, ἐκεῖ δέ, πλησιαίτερον οὔσης τῆς πόλεως, συνεχέστερον τῆς τῶν ὄντως ἀγαπητῶν καὶ οἰκειοτάτων καὶ φιλτάτων ὄψεως ἀπολαύσομεν· ἀφίξονται γὰρ καὶ ἀναπαύσονται καὶ ὡς ἐν προαστείοις πορρωτέρω κειμένοις κατὰ μέρος ἔσονται συναγωγαί. καὶ οὕτως ἐγένετο». 7.11.18 καὶ μεθ' ἕτερα περὶ τῶν συμβεβηκότων αὐτῷ αὖθις ταῦτα γράφει· «πολλαῖς γε ταῖς ὁμολογίαις Γερμανὸς σεμνύνεται, πολλά γε εἰπεῖν ἔχει καθ' ἑαυτοῦ γενόμενα· ὅσας ἀριθμῆσαι δύναται περὶ ἡμῶν ἀποφάσεις, δημεύσεις, προγραφάς, ὑπαρχόντων ἁρπαγάς, ἀξιωμάτων ἀποθέσεις, δόξης κοσμικῆς ὀλιγωρίας, ἐπαίνων ἡγεμονικῶν καὶ βουλευτικῶν καταφρονήσεις καὶ τῶν ἐναντίων, ἀπειλῶν καὶ καταβοήσεων καὶ κινδύνων καὶ διωγμῶν καὶ πλάνης καὶ στενοχωρίας καὶ ποικίλης θλίψεως ὑπομονήν, οἷα τὰ ἐπὶ ∆εκίου καὶ Σαβίνου συμβάντα μοι, οἷα μέχρι νῦν Αἰμιλιανοῦ. 7.11.19 ποῦ δὲ Γερμανὸς ἐφάνη; τίς δὲ περὶ
