those absurd and wicked deliberations. And just as many of the rich, filling a sponge with balsam, thus wipe their tables, so that if any stain from the 55.158 food should occur, it may be wiped away and show the table clean; so indeed let us also do, instead of balsam filling the mouth with spiritual melody, so that if any stain from gluttony has arisen in the soul, we may wipe it away by that melody, and standing together let us say: You have gladdened us, Lord, in Your work, and in the works of Your hands we will rejoice. And let a prayer be added after the psalmody, so that along with the soul we may also sanctify the house itself. For just as those who bring mimes, and dancers, and harlots into their banquets, call demons and the devil there, and fill their own houses with a thousand wars—from which indeed come jealousies and adulteries and fornications and countless evils—so those who call David with the lyre, call Christ inside through him. But where Christ is, no demon would ever dare to enter, or rather even to peek in; but peace, and love, and all good things will come as from fountains. Those people make their house a theater; you make your room a church. For where there is psalm, and prayer, and a chorus of prophets, and a God-loving mind of those who sing, one would not err in calling this assembly a church. And even if you do not know the power of the words, for the time being at least train your mouth to say the words. For the tongue is sanctified also through the words, when these are spoken with zeal. If we establish ourselves in this habit, we will never abandon this good service, not even willingly or through laziness, as custom will compel us, even against our will, to perform this good worship each day. In this melody, even if one is old, or young, or has a rough voice, or is inexperienced in all rhythm, no offense is committed. For what is sought here is a sober soul, an awakened mind, a contrite heart, a sound reasoning, a purified conscience. If you enter into the holy choir of God having these things, you will be able to stand beside David himself. Here there is no need of a lyre, nor of stretched strings, nor of a plectrum and skill, nor of any instruments; but if you wish, you can make yourself a lyre, by mortifying the members of the flesh, and making a great symphony of the body with the soul. For when the flesh does not desire against the spirit, but yields to its commands, and brings this to conclusion on the best and most wonderful path, thus you will produce a spiritual melody. There is no need here of skill perfected over a long time, but only a noble purpose is needed, and we will receive proficiency in a brief moment of time. There is no need of place, no need of time, but it is possible to sing with the mind in every place and at every time. For whether you are walking in the marketplace, or are on the roads, or sitting with friends, it is possible to stir up the soul, it is possible to cry out while silent. Thus also Moses cried out, and God heard. Even if you are an artisan, sitting and working in a workshop, you will be able to sing psalms. Even if you are a soldier, attending in a court of law, you will be able to do this same thing. 3. It is possible to sing psalms even without a voice, while the mind resounds within. For we do not sing to men, but to God who is able both to hear hearts and to enter into the secret things of our mind. And Paul, indicating these things, cries out, saying: The Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. But He who searches the hearts saw what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to God. And he said this, not because the Spirit groaned, but because spiritual men,
