the dog's food. You called me a dog? Give me a crumb. You became an advocate for me in my request, show your consent in the granting. Yes, Lord; for even the little dogs eat from the crumbs that fall from their masters' table. What then says the one who refused, who sent her away, who said: It is not right to take the children's bread and give it to the little dogs? the one who says: I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. What does he say? “O woman.” Have you become her admirer? Do you proclaim the woman, have you not shamed her? Did you not send her away? For this reason I sent her away. For if I had released her from the beginning, you would not have learned of her faith. If she had received it at the outset, she would have departed, and she would not have known her treasure. 95.1449 For this reason I postponed the gift, so that I might show them her faith. “O woman.” God says, “O woman!” Let those who pray with mindlessness hear. When I say, “Call upon God, beseech him, implore him;” he says, “I called once and a second time, a third, a tenth, and I did not receive.” Do not stop until you receive. Then stop when you receive; or rather then; but even then persist. And if you receive, ask; but when you have received, give thanks that you have received. Many enter the Church, and complete ten thousand lines of prayer, and depart. For does God have need of many words? He only needs your prayer. And what, he says, "I knelt and I prayed?" You knelt on your knees, but your mind flew outside. Your body was inside, and your soul outside. Your mouth was speaking, and your mind was counting interest, contracts, transactions, lands, properties. For the devil, being wicked, and knowing that in the time of prayer we accomplish great things, then attacks. Often we lie on our backs, and we think of nothing, and the mind is at rest. We came to pray, and ten thousand thoughts come, so that it may cast us out empty. Knowing these things in your prayers, know the Canaanite woman. But you do not have a daughter possessed by a demon. What did the Canaanite woman say? "Have mercy on me; my daughter is grievously possessed by a demon." A great demon is sin; the one possessed by a demon is pitied, the one who sins is hated. That one has forgiveness, this one is deprived of a defense. "Have mercy on me"; a short phrase, and an ocean of loving-kindness. For where there is mercy, there are all good things. Even if you are outside, cry out and say, "Have mercy on me"; not moving your lips, but shouting with your mind; and God hears those who are silent. A place is not sought, but a way suffices. Jeremiah was in the mud, and he drew God to himself. Daniel was in the lions' den, and he placated God; the three young men were in the furnace, and they prevailed upon God. The thief was crucified, and the cross did not hinder, but opened paradise. Job was on the dunghill, and he made God merciful. Wherever you may be, pray. Even if you stand before a judge, pray. When a judge is angry with you, pray. The sea was in front, behind the Egyptians pursued, Moses was in the middle. Great is prayer in distress; but great is the sea of prayer. Behind the Egyptians pursued, and in the middle was prayer. And Moses said nothing; and God says to him, "Why do you cry out to me?" Even if your mouth is silent, yet your heart cries out. And you, when you stand before a raging and tyrannical judge, even before the executioners themselves, pray to God. And as you pray, the waves are stilled. Is the judge upon you? Flee to God; Is the ruler near you? You call upon the Master. For is He a man? He is always near, and is everywhere, and fills all things. If you wish to call upon a man, and to learn what he is doing, while he is serving he does not answer. But with God there is nothing of the sort. For wherever you go and call, he hears. No doorkeeper, no steward, no mediator, no servant, none of these. Say, "Have mercy on me," and God is present. While you are still speaking he will say, "Behold, I am here." O word full of 95.1452 gentleness, not waiting for the prayer to be finished. You do not yet finish the prayer, and you receive the gift. "Have mercy on me"; let us imitate this Canaanite woman. "Have mercy on me; my daughter is grievously possessed by a demon." And what did she hear? "O woman, great is your faith; let it be to you as you desire." You were at a loss, you were insulted by me. I sent you away, and you did not depart, but you remained. Truly,
