nor touch it. For Adam was cast out of paradise for no other reason than that the fruit of the plant appeared beautiful and good for eating, and he ate of it; and for this he was rejected and cast out and condemned to death and corruption. Therefore, those who wish to return to that paradise—or rather, to the kingdom of heaven—ought to maintain self-control without any transgression even in these matters, so that they do not gradually fall into greater and harmful desires. If the brothers sitting with you urge you to eat or drink something extra, answer no one anything else, but folding your hands and rising slightly and bowing your head, say in a gentle voice: "Forgive me," and thus always answer in all things and neither offer anyone your leftovers, nor take anything from anyone. If you do not drink wine, do not seek at all to receive it, nor give it to any other of the brothers, unless perhaps he is a guest and has come to you for some need. Never consent to eat a morning meal with anyone, nor to eat or drink or have supper in the evening; for all evils are born from these things, and these are the snares of the devil and his traps, which are seen as good, (336) but have the poison of death hidden in them, which he who believes us will flee, and he who keeps our words, by the cooperation of the grace of God, remains unwounded and unharmed by them, but the rest, as they do not know, choose to live a worldly life in the monastic habit, and falling into chasms and over cliffs, they do not perceive it.
You therefore, most desired brother, be willing to keep these things, even if you must die; for otherwise you will not be able to escape the demon of gluttony. But know that as you keep these things, the devil, unable to bear seeing you, will stir up all the slothful against you, and they will revile you and laugh and envy and mock you and bring countless afflictions upon you, so that they might turn you away from your good intention and your saving deeds; which if you endure, beloved, you will find great help and comfort from our God and Savior. Therefore, when others are sitting and eating at supper, but you are not eating but either serving or not, do not forget to say these things to yourself: "If I myself had certainly repented and my sins had been forgiven, I too would be rejoicing and eating with my brothers. But since I, wretched one, have made myself unworthy through my shameful deeds, let me receive here according to my works!" and saying these things, control your stomach with all your might. Never seek nor desire the first seat, but hate it from your soul as being the cause and agent of pride. For your humility will exalt you, and being last of all will make you first, since it is written: "Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted".
(337) So then, after you have risen up with the whole brotherhood and given thanks to God and been dismissed by the priest, run in silence to your cell, and having closed the door, take up your book. And having read a little, if it is the days of summer, lie down on your mat and take a very short sleep—for abstaining from satiety and using a simple table with bread and a measured amount of water and vegetables or legumes, you will sleep less and rise up more quickly—but if it is winter, after reading a little, take up your handiwork and persevere in it until the wood signals the hymnody of the lamp-lighting service.
Then entering again into the assembly, stand in fear and attention before God, chanting to him and confessing, and speaking to no one at all. And when the lamp-lighting service is finished, if you are able to restrain yourself from eating or drinking the
