I do not mean by 'pit' the visible world, but truly the darkness of sin, to a wicked pit, to a gloomy pit, to a pit and grave terribly in the lowest depths, which the sun is not accustomed to illuminate. For the night of sin is outside the visible world and the world to come, and it both holds now those who foolishly fall into it and likewise will hold them as prisoners when they die for ages of ages; of whom I, O my Christ, am the first, who was seized and brought down into it, and finding myself in its lowest depths, cried out: Have mercy on me! Having come to the knowledge of my evils - for I knew where I was brought down by them, for which reason I also wept, I brought down showers of tears from my eyes with effort, I repented with all my heart (196) and cried out with unutterable groanings. And you heard from the ineffable height me who was lying in the lowest depths, of infinite darkness, endless in its end, and leaving the powers around you, passing by all visible things, you came down there where I was lying. You shone immediately, you drove away the darkness, you raised me up by your divine inspiration, you set me on the feet of your commandments, you charmed me with your beauty, and wounded me with love, you changed me completely. I saw Your face and was afraid, although it appeared to me benevolent and approachable, but your loveliness amazed me and astonished me, O Trinity, my God! For the character of the three is one in each, and the three are one person, my God, who is called Spirit, the God of all. You then appeared to me, the all-wretched one; how was I not to shudder and sink and become lower than I was and be covered again by the darkness,
