O woman, great is your faith. The woman has died, and her encomium remains more brilliant than a diadem over as much of the earth as the sun looks upon. You hear Christ saying: O woman, great is your faith; let it be to you as you desire. And the demon went out, and her daughter was healed. When? From that hour. Not from when her mother came, but from when she heard from our Savior, O woman, great is your faith; let it be to you as you desire. And so she came expecting to find her possessed by a demon, and found her healthy, having been cured according to her wish by the command of the Master. One must always pray, both before the struggles, and in the struggles themselves, and ask for help from above. For the common salvation of men, it is necessary to pray first, and then for ourselves. For we have been made for fellowship, and he who prefers this to his own private interest would be most pleasing to God. The Lord has commanded that you call upon him in the day of affliction. Therefore one must not hesitate, but at every time call upon God, and especially in times of affliction, that we may show our enemies that we have been swallowed up by circumstances, but with confidence we look up to God. Having prayed many times, and having failed, do not grow weary, nor despair, but having renewed your petitions to God, approach the master again shamelessly. For in times of need, shamelessness is preferred to modesty. For because of his shamelessness it will be given to him as much as he wants, as the Lord said. Just as breathing is never untimely, so too is asking mystical requests from the Lord never untimely, until the last breath. By day, he says, I have cried out, and in the night before you, O Lord my God. Do you see how the divine David becomes a model for you for praying unceasingly, and not falling into despondency. 95.1453 If we have often been benefited by meeting a good man, how much will we gain by conversing daily and nightly through prayer and psalmody with the Master of all! Not a chance good, but a very great one, to always commend ourselves through supplication to the stronger one. It is not a small thing for the least ones even to ascend one step of the ladder of virtues, and for a time to be above the earth. Dare to approach with weeping the heavenly chief physician Jesus, and to lay bare all the wounds of the soul. For there would be no passion, which the most philanthropic Christ is not able to heal. Hasten to destroy the worms of the mind through prayer, and fasting, and vigorous vigil. Know well, we have known some who have reached old age itself, who through prayer and hope have received the greatest heavenly gift. Absolutely nothing can oppose the Lord, not time, not place, not thing, not the roaring devil, not warring demons, not weakness of soul or body, not barrenness of thoughts, not the law of the members of flesh and blood, of which Satan and the dragon boast, he who has his strength in his loins, and his power, which is full of abomination, in the navel of his belly; not a most evil, passion-filled habit; not a custom of many years and long-standing. We must not preserve the thoughts that are pleasing to the devil, but must destroy them with the dagger of the divine word. Our soul, he says, like a sparrow has been delivered from the snare of the hunting demons. For just as sparrows through the movement of their wings are lifted up above the earth, so also the God-fearing man through prayers transfers himself from earthly things to heavenly things. Fulfill the power of prayer. For whether you eat, he says, or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. Sitting at table, pray; offering the bread, render thanks to the one who gave the grace. Has the need for food passed? Yet let not the memory of the benefactor pass. Putting on your tunic, give thanks to the giver. Putting on your cloak, increase your love for God, who has graciously given us suitable coverings for both winter and summer, preserving our life and covering our nakedness.

Ὦ γύναι, μεγάλη σου ἡ πίστις. Ἀπέθανεν ἡ γυνὴ, καὶ τὸ ἐγκώμιον αὐτῆς μένει διαδήματος λαμπρότερον εἰς ὅσην ἥλιος ἐφορᾷ γῆν. Ἀκούεις τοῦ Χριστοῦ λέγοντος· Ὦ γύναι, Μεγάλη σου ἡ πίστις γενηθήτω σοι ὡς θέλεις σύ. Καὶ ἐξῆλθε τὸ δαιμόνιον, καὶ ἰάθη ἡ θυγάτηρ αὐτῆς. Πότε; ἀπὸ ὥρας ἐκείνης. Οὐκ ἐξ ἧς ἦλθεν ἡ μήτηρ αὐτῆς, ἀλλ' ἐξ ἧς ἤκουσε παρὰ τοῦ Σωτῆρος ἡμῶν, Ὦ γύναι, μεγάλη σου ἡ πίστις· γενηθήτω σοι ὡς θέλεις. Καὶ λοιπὸν ἦλθεν προσδοκοῦσα εὑρεῖν δαιμονιζομένην, καὶ εὗρεν ὑγιαίνουσαν, τῷ θελήματι αὐτῆς θεραπευθεῖσαν κατὰ τὴν κέλευσιν τοῦ ∆εσπότου. Ἀεὶ προσεύχεσθαι δεῖ, καὶ πρὸ τῶν ἀγώνων, καὶ ἐν αὐτοῖς τοῖς ἀγῶσι, καὶ τὴν ἄνωθεν ἐπικουρίαν αἰτεῖν. Ὑπὲρ τῆς κοινῆς τῶν ἀνθρώπων, χρὴ εὔχεσθαι πρότερον σωτηρίας, εἶθ' οὕτως ὑπὲρ ἑαυτῶν. Ἐπὶ γὰρ κοινωνίαν γεγόναμεν, καὶ ταύτην ὁ προτιμῶν τοῦ καθ' ἑαυτὸν ἰδίου, μάλιστα εἴη Θεῷ κεχαρισμένος. Προσέταξε Κύριος, ἵνα ἐπικαλέσῃ αὐτὸν ἐν ἡμέρᾳ θλίψεως. ∆ιὸ οὐ χρὴ κατοκνεῖν, ἀλλὰ παντὶ μὲν καιρῷ ἐπικαλεῖσθαι τὸν Θεὸν, μάλιστα δὲ ἐν τοῖς καιροῖς τῶν θλίψεων, ἵνα δείξωμεν τοῖς ἐχθροῖς, ὅτι κατεπόθημεν ὑπὸ τῶν περιστάσεων, ἀλλὰ μετὰ πεποιθήσεως πρὸς τὸν Θεὸν ἄνω βλέπομεν. Πλειστάκις δεηθεὶς, καὶ ἀποτυχὼν, μὴ ἀποκάμῃς, μηδὲ ἀπελπίσῃς, ἀλλὰ ἀνακαινίσας τοὺς πρὸς τὸν Θεὸν λιβέλλους, πάλιν πρόσελθε ἀναιδῶς τῷ δεσπότῃ. Προτιμᾶται γὰρ ἐν ταῖς ἀνάγκαις τῆς αἰδοῦς ἡ ἀναίδεια. ∆ιὰ γὰρ τὴν ἀναίδειαν αὐτοῦ δοθήσεται αὐτῷ ὅσον θέλει, καθὼς εἶπεν ὁ Κύριος. Ὥσπερ τὸ ἀναπνεῖν οὐδέποτε ἄκαιρον, οὕτως οὐδὲ τὸ αἰτεῖσθαι παρὰ Κυρίου τὰ αἰτήματα μυστικὰ, μέχρις ἐσχάτης ἀναπνοῆς. Ἡμέρας, φησὶν, ἐκέκραξα, καὶ ἐν νυκτὶ ἐναντίον σου, Κύριε ὁ Θεός μου. Ὁρᾷς πῶς ∆αβὶδ ὁ θεσπέσιος ὑποτύπωσις ὑμῖν γίνεται πρὸς τὸ ἀδιαλείπτως εὔχεσθαι, καὶ μὴ καταφέρεσθαι εἰς ἀκηδίᾳν. 95.1453 Εἰ πλεονάκις ὠφελήθημεν ἀνδρὶ ἀγαθῷ συντυχόντες, πηλίκα κερδανοῦμεν καθ' ἡμέραν καὶ νύκτωρ προσδιαλεγόμενοι δι' εὐχῆς, καὶ ψαλμῳδίας τῷ ∆εσπότῃ τῶν ὅλων! Οὐ τὸ τυχὸν ἀγαθὸν, ἀλλὰ καὶ ἄγαν μέγα τὸ πάντοτε διὰ τῆς ἱκετείας ἑαυτοὺς τῷ κρείττονι παρατίθεσθαι. Οὐ μικρὸν τοῖς ἐλαχίστοις καὶ τὸ μίαν βαθμίδα τῆς τῶν ἀρετῶν κλίμακος ἀναθῆναι, καὶ τέως ἄνω γενέσθαι τῆς γῆς. Τόλμησον προσελθεῖν μετὰ κλαυθμοῦ τῷ οὐρανίῳ ἀρχιάτρῳ Ἰησοῦ, καὶ πάντα τῆς ψυχῆς ἀπογυμνῶσαι τὰ τραύματα. Οὐδὲν γὰρ ἂν εἴη πάθος, ὅπερ μὴ ἰσχύει θεραπεῦσαι Χριστὸς ὁ φιλανθρωπότατος. Τοὺς σκώληκας τῆς διανοίας ἐξαφανίζειν σπεῦδε δι' εὐχῆς, καὶ νηστείας, καὶ ἀγρυπνίας εὐτόνου. Εὖ ἴσθι, καὶ εἰς τὸ γῆρας αὐτὸ ἐληλακότας τινὰς ἔγνωμεν, δι' εὐχῆς καὶ ἐλπίδος μέγιστον λελογχότας ἐπουρανίου χαρίσματος. Οὐδὲν παντελῶς ἀντιτάξασθαι δύναται τῷ Κυρίῳ, οὐ χρόνος, οὐ τόπος, οὐ πρᾶγμα, οὐ διάβολος βρέμων, οὐ δαίμονες πολεμοῦντες, οὐκ ἀσθένεια ψυχικὴ ἢ σωματικὴ, οὐ λογισμῶν στειρώσεις, οὐ νόμος μελῶν σαρκός τε καὶ αἵματος, ὧν κατακαυχᾶται ὁ Σατανᾶς καὶ δράκων, ὁ τὴν ἰσχὺν ἐπ' ὀσφύος κεκτημένος, τὴν δὲ δύναμιν αὐτοῦ τὴν μεστὴν βδελυγμίας, ἐπ' ὀμφαλοῦ τῆς γαστρός· οὐχ ἕξις κακίστη πολυπαθής· οὐ συνήθεια πολυετής τε καὶ χρόνιος. Οὐ περιποιητέον ἡμῖν τοὺς ἀρέσκοντας τῷ διαβόλῳ λογισμοὺς, ἀλλὰ ἀναιρετέον τῇ τοῦ θείου λόγου παραξιφίδι. Ἡ ψυχὴ ἡμῶν, φησὶν, ὡς στρουθίον ἐῤῥύσθη ἐκ τῆς παγίδος τῶν θηρευόντων δαιμόνων. Ὥσπερ γὰρ τὰ στρουθία διὰ τῆς τῶν πτερῶν κινήσεως μετάρσια γίνεται ἄνω τῆς γῆς, οὕτω καὶ ὁ θεοσεβὴς ἄνθρωπος ἀπὸ τῶν ἐπιγείων πρὸς τὰ ἐπουράνια διὰ προσευχῶν μετατίθησιν ἑαυτόν. Τὴν δύναμιν πληροῦτε τῆς προσευχῆς. Εἴτε γὰρ ἐσθίετε, φησὶν, εἴτε πίνετε, εἴτε τί ποιεῖτε, πάντα εἰς δόξαν Θεοῦ ποιεῖτε. Καθεζόμενος ἐπὶ τραπέζης, προσεύχου· προσφερόμενος τὸν ἄρτον, τῷ δεδωκότι τὴν χάριν ἀποπλήρου. Παρῆλθεν ἡ χρεία τῶν βρωμάτων; ἡ μέντοι μνήμη τοῦ εὐεργέτου μὴ παρερχέσθω. Τὸν χιτῶνα ἐνδυόμενος, εὐχαρίστει τῷ δεδωκότι. Τὸ ἱμάτιον περιβαλλόμενος, αὔξησον τὴν εἰς Θεὸν ἀγάπην, ὃς καὶ χειμῶνι, καὶ θέρει ἐπιτήδεια ἡμῖν σκεπάσματα ἐχαρίσατο, τήν τε ζωὴν ἡμῶν συντηροῦντα, καὶ τὸ ἄσχημον περιστέλλοντα.
