When the boy came to sole power, he administered the government more prudently, and he immediately put a stop to the persecution against us by means of edicts, commanding by a rescript that the leaders of the word should be at liberty to perform their customary duties, which was of the following tenor: “The Emperor Caesar Publius Licinius Gallienus Pius Felix Augustus to Dionysius and Pinnas and Demetrius and the other bishops. I have ordered the benefit of my bounty to be published throughout the whole world, that they may withdraw from the places of worship, and for this reason you also may use the ordinance of my rescript, so that no one may trouble you. And this, which you are now permitted to carry out, has already long since been conceded by me, and therefore Aurelius Quirinius, who is in charge of the highest office, will observe the ordinance given by me.” Let this be inserted, having been translated from the Roman tongue for the sake of greater clearness. And another ordinance of the same emperor is extant, which he made to other bishops, permitting them to take back the places of the so-called cemeteries. At that time, Xystus was still presiding over the church of the Romans, and over that of Antioch, Demetrianus after Fabius, and Firmilianus over Caesarea in Cappadocia, and in addition to these, Gregory and his brother Athenodorus, acquaintances of Origen, over the churches in Pontus; and over Caesarea in Palestine, after Theoctistus departed this life, Domnus succeeded to the episcopate, and when he had served a short time, Theotecnus, our contemporary, was appointed his successor; he also was of Origen's school. But also in Jerusalem, when Mazabanes had gone to his rest, the throne was succeeded by Hymenaeus, who himself also was distinguished in our time for very many years. During their time, when there was peace everywhere in the churches, in Caesarea of Palestine, Marinus, a man honored with military dignities, distinguished by birth and wealth, was beheaded for his witness to Christ, for the following reason. 7.15.2 There is a certain honor among the Romans, the vine-staff, and they say those who obtain it become centurions. As a place was vacant, the order of his rank called Marinus to this promotion, and when he was about to receive the honor, another came forward before the tribunal, and accused him, saying that it was not lawful for him to share in Roman dignity according to the ancient laws, since he was a Christian and did not sacrifice to the emperors, and that the lot fell to himself. 7.15.3 At this, the judge, who was Achaeus, being moved, first asked Marinus of what opinion he was, and when he saw him steadfastly confessing that he was a Christian, he gave him a space of three hours for consideration. 7.15.4 Then when he had gone outside the court, Theotecnus the bishop there drew him away, approached him for a conversation, and taking him by the hand, led him to the church, and having placed him inside near the sanctuary itself, he lifted his cloak a little and pointed to the sword that was fastened to him, and at the same time he brought forward and placed before him the scripture of the divine gospels, bidding him to choose which of the two he preferred. And when without delay he stretched forth his right hand and took the divine scripture, “Hold fast then, hold fast,” Theotecnus said to him, “to God, and may you obtain what you have chosen, being strengthened by him, and go in peace.” 7.15.5 Immediately upon his return from there a herald cried out, summoning him before the court; for the appointed time had already been fulfilled; and so he stood before the judge and showed a zeal for the faith even greater, and immediately, just as he was, being led away to death, he was perfected. 7.16.1 There also Astyrius is remembered for his God-loving boldness, a man of the senatorial order in Rome, beloved by emperors and known to all for his noble birth and wealth; who, being present when the martyr was being perfected, put his shoulder under, and lifting the body upon a splendid and costly garment, carried it away, and having wrapped it very richly, with the fitting burial

Ἐν τούτῳ δὲ τῆς μὲν Ῥωμαίων ἐκκλησίας εἰς ἔτι τότε καθηγεῖτο Ξύστος, τῆς δ' ἐπ' Ἀντιοχείας μετὰ Φάβιον ∆ημητριανός, Φιρμιλιανὸς δὲ Καισαρείας τῆς Καππαδοκῶν, καὶ ἐπὶ τούτοις τῶν κατὰ Πόντον ἐκκλησιῶν Γρηγόριος καὶ ὁ τούτου ἀδελφὸς Ἀθηνόδωρος, Ὠριγένους γνώριμοι· τῆς δ' ἐπὶ Παλαιστίνης Καισαρείας, Θεοκτίστου μεταλλάξαντος, διαδέχεται τὴν ἐπισκοπὴν ∆όμνος, βραχεῖ δὲ χρόνῳ τούτου διαγενομένου, Θεότεκνος, ὁ καθ' ἡμᾶς, διάδοχος καθίσταται· τῆς δ' Ὠριγένους διατριβῆς καὶ οὗτος ἦν. ἀλλὰ καὶ ἐν Ἱεροσολύμοις ἀναπαυσαμένου Μαζαβάνου, τὸν θρόνον Ὑμέναιος, ὁ καὶ αὐτὸς ἐπὶ πλείστοις τοῖς καθ' ἡμᾶς διαπρέψας ἔτεσιν, διεδέξατο. Κατὰ τούτους εἰρήνης ἁπανταχοῦ τῶν ἐκκλησιῶν οὔσης, ἐν Καισαρείᾳ τῆς Παλαιστίνης Μαρῖνος τῶν ἐν στρατείαις ἀξιώμασι τετιμημένων, γένει τε καὶ πλούτῳ περιφανὴς ἀνήρ, διὰ τὴν Χριστοῦ μαρτυρίαν τὴν κεφαλὴν ἀποτέμνεται, τοιᾶσδε ἕνεκεν αἰτίας. 7.15.2 τιμή τίς ἐστι παρὰ Ῥωμαίοις τὸ κλῆμα, οὗ τοὺς τυχόντας φασὶν ἑκατοντάρχους γίνεσθαι. τόπου σχολάζοντος, ἐπὶ τοῦτο προκοπῆς τὸν Μαρῖνον ἡ τοῦ βαθμοῦ τάξις ἐκάλει, ἤδη τε μέλλοντα τῆς τιμῆς ἔχεσθαι παρελθὼν ἄλλος πρὸ τοῦ βήματος, μὴ ἐξεῖναι μὲν ἐκείνῳ τῆς Ῥωμαίων μετέχειν ἀξίας κατὰ τοὺς παλαιοὺς νόμους, Χριστιανῷ γε ὄντι καὶ τοῖς βασιλεῦσι μὴ θύοντι, κατηγόρει, αὐτῷ δ' ἐπιβάλλειν τὸν κλῆρον· 7.15.3 ἐφ' ᾧ κινηθέντα τὸν δικαστήν Ἀχαιὸς οὗτος ἦν πρῶτον μὲν ἐρέσθαι ποίας ὁ Μαρῖνος εἴη γνώμης, ὡς δ' ὁμολογοῦντα Χριστιανὸν ἐπιμόνως ἑώρα, τριῶν ὡρῶν ἐπιδοῦναι αὐτῷ εἰς ἐπίσκεψιν διάστημα. 7.15.4 ἐκτὸς δῆτα γενόμενον αὐτὸν τοῦ δικαστηρίου Θεότεκνος ὁ τῇδε ἐπίσκοπος ἀφέλκει, προσελθὼν δι' ὁμιλίας, καὶ τῆς χειρὸς λαβὼν ἐπὶ τὴν ἐκκλησίαν προάγει, εἴσω τε πρὸς αὐτῷ στήσας τῷ ἁγιάσματι, μικρόν τι παραναστείλας αὐτοῦ τῆς χλαμύδος καὶ τὸ προσηρτημένον αὐτῷ ξίφος ἐπιδείξας ἅμα τε ἀντιπαρατίθησιν προσαγαγὼν αὐτῷ τὴν τῶν θείων εὐαγγελίων γραφήν, κελεύσας τῶν δυεῖν ἑλέσθαι τὸ κατὰ γνώμην. ὡς δ' ἀμελλητὶ τὴν δεξιὰν προτείνας ἐδέξατο τὴν θείαν γραφήν, «ἔχου τοίνυν, ἔχου», φησὶν πρὸς αὐτὸν ὁ Θεότεκνος, «τοῦ θεοῦ, καὶ τύχοις ὧν εἵλου, πρὸς αὐτοῦ δυναμούμενος, καὶ βάδιζε μετ' εἰρήνης». 7.15.5 εὐθὺς ἐκεῖθεν ἐπανελθόντα αὐτὸν κῆρυξ ἐβόα καλῶν πρὸ τοῦ δικαστηρίου· καὶ γὰρ ἤδη τὰ τῆς προθεσμίας τοῦ χρόνου πεπλήρωτο· καὶ δὴ παραστὰς τῷ δικαστῇ καὶ μείζονα τῆς πίστεως τὴν προθυμίαν ἐπιδείξας, εὐθὺς ὡς εἶχεν, ἀπαχθεὶς τὴν ἐπὶ θανάτῳ, τελειοῦται. 7.16.1 Ἔνθα καὶ Ἀστύριος ἐπὶ τῇ θεοφιλεῖ παρρησίᾳ μνημονεύεται, ἀνὴρ τῶν ἐπὶ Ῥώμης συγκλητικῶν γενόμενος βασιλεῦσίν τε προσφιλὴς καὶ πᾶσι γνώριμος εὐγενείας τε ἕνεκα καὶ περιουσίας· ὃς παρὼν τελειουμένῳ τῷ μάρτυρι, τὸν ὦμον ὑποθείς, ἐπὶ λαμπρᾶς καὶ πολυτελοῦς ἐσθῆτος ἄρας τὸ σκῆνος ἐπιφέρεται, περιστείλας τε εὖ μάλα πλουσίως, τῇ προσηκούσῃ ταφῇ
