Emperor Anastasius, having sent Areobindus the son of Dagalaïphus, magister militum of the East, the husband of Juliana, and Patricius, magister militum of the great praesental command, and Hypatius, magister militum praesentalis, the son of Secundinus the patrician, and the patrician Appion, having made him praetorian prefect of the East, and an infinite multitude of an army 399 with them of infantry and cavalry forces. and both armies engaged with one another, and many were slaughtered and fell on both sides; concerning which war Eustathius the most learned chronicler wrote; who also died immediately, without having composed his account to completion. But the same emperor Anastasius recalled the magister militum Hypatius, son of Secundinus, to Constantinople, and sent in his place the most glorious Celer the Illyrian, a wise man; and the cities held by the Persians were given back through the same magister Celer. And there was peace and a cessation of the war, and the expeditionary forces and the whole army of both Romans and Persians withdrew. The most divine Anastasius immediately fortified Doras, a place in Mesopotamia, being very large and strong, situated between the borders of the Romans and Persians; and he built in it two public baths and churches and porticoes and granaries for storing grain and cisterns for water. The same place was called Doras for this reason by Alexander of Macedon, because he captured the king of the Persians there, and from there it has its name; but now having received the rights of a city it was renamed Anastasiopolis. And statues of the same Anastasius were erected there. 400 And in his reign Euphemius the patriarch of Constantinople was deposed; and he exiled him to Euchaita in Pontus as a Nestorian; and Macedonius became patriarch of Constantinople in his place, who was also himself deposed as a Nestorian. Likewise also Flavianus, patriarch of Antioch, was exiled as a Nestorian to Petra, a city so called, which is in Palaestina Tertia. And in his place Severus, one of the monks, became patriarch in Antioch the great, on the 6th of the month of November, in the year designated according to the Antiochenes 561. The same emperor, having relieved John the Paphlagonian from administering the public records of the praetorian prefecture, made him ex-consul, making Marinus the Syrian tractator and logothete in his place; who removed all the decurions from the city council, and appointed in their place the so-called vindices in every city of the Roman empire. The same emperor appointed as comes largitionum in Constantinople the ex-consul John the Paphlagonian, called Caiaphas; who made all the circulating small change into folles to circulate throughout the whole Roman state from then on. The same John melted down the bronze works of the forum of Constantinople, which the most divine emperor Con 401 stantine, having collected from each city as being the most beautiful, brought for the adornment of the same Constantinople on account of their excellence. The same John, having melted them down, made from them a great statue beyond all measure for the same emperor Anastasius; which he erected on the great column, standing empty in the so-called Forum of the Taurus; which column formerly had a statue of Theodosius the Great, and the same statue had fallen by itself during the earthquakes. And at that time the same emperor issued an edict, that no one should make a written contract of kopidermia, nor should the very name of kopidermos be spoken, nor the practice occur, his law stating thus: “it is our prayer to free those under the yoke of slavery; how then shall we tolerate those

Ὁ δὲ αὐτὸς βασιλεὺς κουφίσας Ἰωάννην τὸν Παφλαγόνα ἐκ τοῦ τρακτεύειν τὰ δημόσια χαρτία τοῦ πραιτωρίου τῶν ἐπάρχων ἐποίησεν αὐτὸν ἀπὸ ὑπάτων, ἀντ' αὐτοῦ ποιήσας τρακτευτὴν καὶ λογοθέτην Μαρῖνον τὸν Σύρον· ὅστις τοὺς πολιτευομένους ἅπαντας ἐπῆρε τῆς βουλῆς, καὶ ἐποίησεν ἀντ' αὐτῶν τοὺς λεγομένους βίνδικας εἰς πᾶσαν πόλιν τῆς Ῥωμανίας. ὁ δὲ αὐτὸς βασιλεὺς προεχειρίσατο κόμητα λαργιτιώνων ἐν Κωνσταντινουπόλει τὸν ἀπὸ ὑπάτων Ἰωάννην τὸν Παφλαγόνα τὸν λεγόμενον Καϊάφαν· ὅστις ἅπαν τὸ προχωρὸν κέρμα τὸ λεπτὸν ἐποίησε φολλερὰ προχωρεῖν εἰς πᾶσαν τὴν Ῥωμαϊκὴν κατάστασιν ἔκτοτε. Ὁ δὲ αὐτὸς Ἰωάννης τὰ χαλκουργήματα τῆς πλατείας Κωνσταντινουπόλεως ἐχώνευσεν, ἅπερ ὁ θειότατος βασιλεὺς Κων 401 σταντῖνος ὡς καλλιστεύοντα ἀπὸ ἑκάστης πόλεως συναγαγὼν ἤνεγκεν εἰς κόσμησιν τῆς αὐτῆς Κωνσταντινουπόλεως δι' ἀρετῆς. ὁ δὲ αὐτὸς Ἰωάννης χωνεύσας αὐτὰ ἐποίησεν ἐξ αὐτῶν στήλην μεγάλην εἰς πᾶσαν ὑπερβολὴν τῷ αὐτῷ Ἀναστασίῳ βασιλεῖ· ἥντινα ἔστησεν εἰς τὸν κίονα τὸν μέγαν, ἑστῶτα ἀργὸν εἰς τὸν φόρον τοῦ Ταύρου τοῦ λεγομένου· ὅστις κίων πρῴην μὲν εἶχε στήλην Θεοδοσίου τοῦ μεγάλου, καὶ ἦν πεσοῦσα εἰς τοὺς φόβους ἡ αὐτὴ στήλη μόνη. Ἐν αὐτῷ δὲ τῷ χρόνῳ ἐξεφώνησεν ὁ αὐτὸς βασιλεὺς διάταξιν, ὥστε μὴ ποιεῖν τινα ἔγγραφον κοπιδερμίας, μήτε δὲ αὐτὸ τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ κοπιδέρμου ὀνομάζεσθαι, μήτε τὸ πρᾶγμα γίνεσθαι, τῆς αὐτοῦ νομοθεσίας ἐχούσης οὕτως· ὅτι ἡμῖν ἐστιν εὐχὴ τοὺς ἐν ζυγῷ δουλείας ἐλευθεροῦν· πῶς οὖν ἀνεξόμεθα τοὺς
