you may please God with trembling, on the one hand working with your hands, on the other singing psalms, on the other praying, or anything else to pass the day. Yes, my child, fulfill my joy, so that hearing the things concerning you I may rejoice and boast. And pray also for me, your humble father. The brothers with me, your brothers, greet you. 172 {1To Hegesimus, my child}1 Well done, child Hegesimus, I consider you a confessor of Christ; for you have led the way well to enter the stadium of salvation with your brothers. You were stripped with Christ, you were scourged with him, you became conformed to the body of his glory. Do you not rejoice? Do you not leap for joy? How many in number are your brothers, and yet you were deemed worthy to contend for the prize with the nine. From where did this come to you, O child? Glorify, sing hymns to, praise the Lord who has freely magnified you. Do not, however, fall back, but be strengthened yet more in the love of Christ, eagerly and fervently serving him through every commandment; for the contest of martyrdom is still at hand, until death is present. Do not grow drowsy in your soul; work with your hands, sing psalms with the spirit, sing psalms also with the mind. Cleanse the mind from the evil thoughts that defile the heart. Rejoice in hope, endure in affliction, be mindful of your departure, remember the fearful day of recompense. Be ready, if it be necessary, both to be scourged again, and perhaps even to die, for Christ's sake, so that it may be yours to say in joy that for your sake we are being put to death all day long, we were regarded as sheep for the slaughter. Pray also for me, the sinner, that I may be saved in all things; the brothers with me, your brothers, greet you. Grace be with you; amen. 173 {1To Stephen, my child}1 Grace to you, brother Stephen, my beloved child, athlete of Christ; I visit you through this letter, I greet you from my heart. Good is your contest and exile for Christ; you chose to bear blows, that you might become conformed to the sufferings of Christ, being crowned in a manner worthy of your name with the martyrdom of Christ. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in the heavens. But since the contest is still at hand, there is need of endurance, so that thus you may receive the promise of God to the end, prepare yourself perhaps to be scourged again, and not only that but also to die a martyr's death. And who is worthy to endure this? I know your struggles in the monastery, both the ascetic and the martyric ones, the eagerness and zeal of your heart, from which you were also led to enter the stadium of the martyrdom of Christ. Still excel, still be valiant through endurance, so that you may dance with the confessors, with the martyrs. Concerning the guarding of your soul, it is superfluous for me to write to you, knowing your exactness, your modesty, your soberness, your vigilance. Be in these things, so that your progress may be proclaimed, remember the day of death and you will always be without negligence. Pray and pray earnestly for my lowliness that I may be saved in all things; the brothers with me, your brothers, greet you very much. Grace be with you; amen. 174 {1To Ephraim, my child}1 Greetings, child Ephraim, the good soldier of Christ; how are you? How is the exile? How is your endurance? Do you give thanks to God that you have been deemed worthy for his name to suffer the things which you have suffered? Do you glorify and praise him that out of all the brotherhood you became one of the ten, second in being flogged and first in rank? Do you sing hymns to him and love him that you saw your blood poured out upon the earth and your flesh torn for the holy icon of Christ? Thanks be to the Lord, my brother, who called you to his confession with the rest; you shone among your brothers, or rather in the church of God. See then your calling, see your glory, where you were below and where Christ has exalted you; for consider yourself and your own affairs and give glory to the good God, for it is not of him who wills, nor of him who runs, but of God who shows mercy. Stand fast then yet, my child, enduring the labor of your inner thoughts; for this war is great and unceasing until the end of life. As you excelled outwardly by bearing blows and imprisonments, excel also against the
