would justify those on the earth through faith, he worked things beyond nature and reason, showing through these that he was God. Therefore he said: "If I do not do the works of my Father, do not believe me." But those who saw and were taught, besides not believing, called him a Samaritan, and one possessed by a demon, and a drunkard, and the son of a carpenter. But when the nations were being saved, burning with wicked jealousy, they would rather be consumed by fire than see these things being saved. And the prophet says that they suffered this also at the birth of the Savior, because a child was born to us, a Son. Therefore the prophet says to the Father: Lord, your arm is high, and they did not know it. As though they scorned some common man, though they ought to have recognized him through his works. But when they learn of his rising from the dead, they will be ashamed, for they also gave sufficient silver to the soldiers, so that it might not be reported to all. And they will be ashamed when they see him coming in the glory of the Father, when those who were honored on account of their fathers are shut out of the bridal chamber. For theirs are the promises, and the lawgiving, and the covenant, but now and then they will envy the nations, being sent to the eternal fire. "For they," he says, "made me jealous with what is not God, and I will make them jealous with what is not a nation." And for these things the prophet asks God to grant to them peace with him. For thus we shall receive full grace from you, having been honored so much on account of the fathers. And the prophet might say this about himself, confessing that having received many benefits from you, I will confess this to be the greatest: the peace of the nation with you. According to this: "Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ." This indeed having happened. we shall be a possession and an inheritance of God, knowing no other, obeying your law which says: "You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve." He might also call "peace" him of whom it is said, "For he is our peace." And the phrase, "for you have rendered all things to us," some say signifies the punishment brought upon them according to the desert of their sins. For since those things were justly brought upon us, grant the one who alone is able to deliver from hostility toward you. By reason of lordship, all things are yours. 2221 May it be that through Christ, we too, having been redeemed from the deadness in sins, may have your fellowship, at which time, knowing from what we have been delivered, we will know no other. But those who remained in the deprivation of life-giving righteousness, and were made dead on account of things relating to God, remain thus, having no cure, obeying none of the spiritual teachers who are able to heal. Therefore, sparing them, you have caused them to perish, not overlooking a longer time to live in wickedness, so that they might not be worse in the offspring of sin, as in the case of the flood he cut short the 120 years, and the 60 spoken of through the present prophet, in agreement with what the 57th psalm says: "Bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days." And again: "Do not take me away in the midst of my days." But some say that it is possible to understand "the dead" as also those whom Christ raised, like Lazarus; whom no other physician could have raised. Which Israel, considering, ought to have confessed Christ as God. But not having done this, he perished. Yet not completely. For the remnant has been saved. And every male of them is the ruling order. For the male rules the female. And you might also say the young men in understanding of the law, according to the prophetic saying: I will go to the great ones, and I will speak to them. And behold, with one accord they broke the yoke, they tore apart the bonds. Such also is this: "Woe to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites;" for whom he asks that evils be added. For not only did they fall from fellowship with God, through the ways they acted insolently against him, but they also perished by calamities from their enemies. And those spoken of as males, he also called glorious, as surpassing the rest, just as also evils, the afflictions. As in, "He who creates evils." And, "There is no evil in a city, which the Lord has not done." 19. 9Lord, in

δικαιώσῃ τοὺς ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς διὰ πίστεως, τὰ ὑπὲρ φύσιν καὶ λόγον εἰργάζετο, διὰ τούτων, ὡς Θεὸς εἴη, δεικνύς. ∆ιόπερ ἔφασκεν· "Εἰ οὐ ποιῶ τὰ ἔργα τοῦ Πατέρος μου, μὴ πιστεύετέ μοι." Οἱ δὲ ὁρῶντες καὶ διδασκόμενοι, πρὸς τῷ μὴ πιστεύειν, Σαμαρείτην, καὶ δαιμονῶντα, καὶ μέθυσον, καὶ τέκτονος ἐκάλουν υἱόν. Σωζομένων δὲ τῶν ἐθνῶν, πονηρῷ καιόμενοι ζήλῳ, πυρίκαυστοι γενέσθαι μᾶλλον ἤθελον, ἢ ταῦτα βλέπειν σωζόμενα. Τοῦτο δὲ καὶ ἐπὶ τῇ τοῦ Σωτῆρος γεννήσει πεπονθέναι φησὶν αὐτοὺς ὁ προφήτης, ὅτι παιδίον ἐγεννήθη ἡμῖν Υἱός. ∆ιὸ πρὸς τὸν Πατέρα φησὶν ὁ προφήτης· Κύριε, ὑψηλός σου ὁ βραχίων, καὶ οὐχ ᾔδεισαν. Ὡς δὴ κοινοῦ τινος ὑπερορῶντες ἀνθρώπου, διὰ τῶν ἔργων αὐτὸν ἐπιγινώσκειν ὀφείλοντες. Γνόντες δὲ αὐτοῦ τὴν ἐκ νεκρῶν ἀναβίωσιν, αἰσχυνθήσονται, ὅτε καὶ ἀργύρια ἱκανὰ τοῖς στρατιώταις ἔδωκαν, ὡς ἂν μὴ πᾶσιν ἔκπυστον γένηται. Αἰσχυνθήσονται δὲ καὶ ὅτ' ἂν ἴδωσιν αὐτὸν ἐρχόμενον ἐν τῇ δόξῃ τοῦ Πατέρος, ὅτε καὶ τοῦ νυμφῶνος ἐκκλείονται οἱ διὰ τοὺς πατέρας τετιμημένοι. Αὐτῶν γὰρ αἱ ἐπαγγελίαι, καὶ ἡ νομοθεσία, καὶ ἡ διαθήκη, νῦν δὲ καὶ τότε τὰ ἔθνη ζηλώσουσι πυρὶ τῷ αἰωνίῳ παραπεμπόμενοι. "Αὐτοὶ γὰρ, φησὶ, παρεζήλωσάν με ἐπ' οὐ Θεῷ, κἀγὼ παραζηλώσω αὐτοὺς ἐπὶ οὐκ ἔθνει." Ὑπὲρ δὲ τούτων αἰτεῖ τὸν Θεὸν ὁ προφήτης τὴν πρὸς αὐτὸν εἰρήνην τούτοις δωρήσασθαι. Οὕτω γὰρ πλήρη παρὰ σοῦ τὴν χάριν ληψόμεθα, τοσαῦτα διὰ τοὺς πατέρας τετιμημένοι. Καὶ περὶ ἑαυτοῦ δὲ τοῦτο λέγοι ἂν ὁ προφήτης ὁμολογῶν ὡς πολλὰς παρὰ σοῦ λαβὼν εὐεργεσίας, ταύτην μεγίστην ὁμολογήσω τὴν πρὸς σὲ τοῦ ἔθνους εἰρήνην. Κατὰ τό· "∆ικαιωθέντες οὖν ἐκ πίστεως εἰρήνην ἔχομεν πρὸς τὸν Θεὸν διὰ τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν καὶ Σωτῆρος Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ." Οὗ δὴ γεγονότος. κτῆσις ἐσόμεθα καὶ κλῆρος Θεοῦ, οὐδένα ἄλλον εἰδότες, τῷ σῷ νόμῳ πειθόμενοι λέγοντι· "Κύριον τὸν Θεόν σου προσκυνήσεις, καὶ αὐτῷ μόνῳ λατρεύσεις." Λέγοι δ' ἂν εἰρήνην καὶ τὸν περὶ οὗ λέλεκται, "Αὐτὸς γάρ ἐστιν ἡ εἰρήνη ἡμῶν." Τὸ δὲ, πάντα γὰρ ἀπέδωκας ἡμῖν, φασί τινες δηλοῦν τὴν κατ' ἀξίαν τῶν ἁμαρτημάτων δίκην αὐτοῖς ἐπαχθεῖσαν. Ἐκείνων γὰρ δικαίως ἡμῖν ἐπαχθέντων, δὸς τὸν μόνον ἀπαλλάξαι τῆς πρὸς σὲ δυσμενείας δυνάμενον. Λόγῳ μὲν δεσποτείας ἅπαντα σά. 2221 Γένοιτο δὲ διὰ Χριστοῦ καὶ λυτρωθέντας ἡμᾶς τῆς ἐν ἁμαρτίαις νεκρώσεως, οἰκείωσιν ἔχειν τὴν σὴν, ὅτε καὶ τίνων ἐῤῥύσθημεν εἰδότες, ἄλλον οὐκ ἔτι γνωσόμεθα. Οἱ δὲ τῇ στερήσει τῆς ζωτικῆς δικαιωσύνης ἐμμείναντες, καὶ νεκρωθέντες διὰ τὰ τῷ Θεῷ, μένουσιν οὕτως, οὐκ ἔχοντες ἴασιν, μηδενὶ τῶν ἰᾶσθαι δυναμένων πνευματικῶν διδασκάλων πειθόμενοι. ∆ιὸ φειδόμενος αὐτῶν, ἀπολέσθαι πεποίηκας, μὴ παριδὼν ἐν κακίᾳ χρόνον ἐπιζῆσαι μακρότερον, ὡς ἂν μὴ χείρους ὦσιν ἐν τοῖς τῆς ἁμαρτίας γεννήμασιν, ὡς ἐπὶ τοῦ κατακλυσμοῦ τὰ ρκʹ συνέτεμεν ἔτη, καὶ τὰ ξʹ τὰ διὰ τοῦ παρόντος εἰρημένα προφήτου, συμφώνως οἷς ὁ νζʹ λέγει ψαλμός· "Ἄνδρες αἱμάτων καὶ δόλιοι οὐ μὴ ἡμισεύσουσι τὰ ἡμέρας." Καὶ πάλιν· "Μὴ ἀναγάγῃς με ἐν ἡμίσει ἡμερῶν." Τινὲς δέ φασι δύνασθαι νοεῖν νεκροὺς καὶ οὓς ἤγειρεν ὁ Χριστὸς, ὡς τὸν Λάζαρον· οὓς οὐκ ἂν ἕτερος ἀνέστησεν ἰατρός. Ὅπερ ἔδει σκοποῦντα τὸν Ἰσραὴλ, Θεὸν ὁμολογῆσαι Χριστόν. Τοῦτο δὲ μὴ ποιήσας, ἀπώλετο. Πλὴν οὐκ ἄρδην. Σέσωσται γὰρ τὸ κατάλειμμα. Πᾶν δὲ ἄρσεν αὐτῶν ἐστι, τὸ ἡγούμενον τάγμα. Τὸ γὰρ ἄῤῥεν ἡγεῖται τοῦ θήλεως. Εἴποις δ' ἂν καὶ τοὺς ἐν συνέσει τῇ τοῦ νόμου νεανικοὺς κατὰ τὸ προφητικὸν τό· Πορεύσομαι πρὸς τοὺς ἁδροὺς, καὶ λαλήσω πρὸς αὐτούς. Καὶ ἰδοὺ ὁμοθυμαδὸν συνέτριψαν ζυγὸν, διέῤῥηξαν δεσμούς. Τοιοῦτον καὶ τό· "Οὐαὶ ὑμῖν, Γραμματεῖς καὶ Φαρισαῖοι ὑποκριταί·" οἷς αἰτεῖ προστεθῆναι κακά. Οὐ μόνον γὰρ τῆς Θεὸν ἐξέπεσον οἰκειότητος, δι' ὧν εἰς αὐτὸν ἐπαρῴνησαν, ἀλλὰ καὶ ταῖς ἐκ τῶν πολεμίων ἀπώλοντο συμφοραῖς. Τοὺς δὲ ἄῤῥενας ῥηθέντας, καὶ ἐνδόξους ἐκάλεσεν, ὡς τῶν λοιπῶν ὑπερέχοντας, ὥσπερ οὖν καὶ κακὰ, τὰ κακωτικά. Ὡς τὸ, "Ὁ κτίζων κακά." Καὶ τὸ, "Οὐκ ἔστι κακία ἐκ πόλει, ἣν Κύριος οὐκ ἐποίησεν." ιιθʹ. 9Κύριε, ἐν
