I have rendered to those who render evil to me.» «If someone compels you to go one mile, go with him two, and to the one who wishes to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak also, and from the one who takes your things, do not demand them back. To the one who asks you, give, and from the one who wishes to borrow from you, do not close your hand; «for a righteous man shows mercy and lends; for the Father wishes that it be given to all, He who makes His sun rise on the evil and the good and sends His rain on the just and the unjust. Therefore it is just to give to all from one's own labors; «For honor,» it says, «the Lord from your just labors.» But the saints are to be preferred. You shall not murder, that is, you shall not destroy your fellow man, for you destroy what has come into being well; not as though all killing were evil, but only that of the innocent, the just [killing] being reserved for rulers alone. You shall not commit adultery, for you divide one flesh into two; «For the two,» it says, «shall be one flesh.» For man and woman are one in nature, in sympathy, in union, in disposition, in life, in manner, but they are separated in form and in number. Nor shall you corrupt a child; for the evil is against nature, having sprung from Sodom, which became the fuel for a divinely-sent fire. «Cursed is such a one, and all the people will say: Amen, amen.» You shall not commit fornication; «For there shall not be,» it says, «a fornicator among the sons of Israel.» You shall not steal; For Achar, having stolen in Israel at Jericho, being stoned with stones, departed from life, and Gehazi, having stolen and lied, inherited Naaman's leprosy, and Judas, stealing the things of the poor, delivered the Lord of glory to the Jews, and repenting, he hanged himself and burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out, and Ananias and Sapphira his wife, having stolen what was their own and having tested the Spirit of the Lord, were immediately put to death by the sentence of Peter, our fellow apostle. You shall not practice magic, you shall not practice sorcery; «For sorcerers,» it says, «you shall not allow to live.» You shall not kill your child in abortion, nor shall you kill the one who has been born; for every thing that has been formed, having received a soul from God, if killed, will be avenged, having been unjustly slain. You shall not covet the things of your neighbor, such as his wife or his child or his ox or his field. You shall not perjure yourself, for it was said not to swear at all; but if not, at least swear truly, because: «Everyone who swears by him will be praised. You shall not bear false witness», because: «The slanderer
