alone, persecuted and put to death by all, we kept festival even then, and every place of individual affliction has become for us a place of festal assembly, field, desert, ship, inn, prison; and the perfect martyrs kept the most joyous festival of all, feasting in heaven; 7.22.5 But after these things war and famine overtook us, which we endured along with the Gentiles, having endured alone the things they did to harm us, and also sharing in what they did and suffered at each other's hands, and again we rejoiced in the peace of Christ, which he has given to us alone; 7.22.6 And when we and they had obtained a very brief respite, this pestilence swooped down, a thing to them more terrible than any fear and more dreadful than any calamity, and as one of their own writers declared, a thing which alone of all things became beyond hope; but for us it was not such a thing, but a training and testing no less than any of the others. For it did not spare us, but it spread greatly among the Gentiles”. 7.22.7 Next to this he adds, saying: “At any rate, most of our brethren, through exceeding love and brotherly affection, not sparing themselves and clinging to one another, visited the sick without reservation, ministering to them diligently, treating them in Christ, departed this life most gladly with them, being filled with the suffering from others and drawing the disease upon themselves from their neighbors and willingly taking upon themselves the pains. And many who nursed and strengthened others, died themselves, transferring their death to themselves and that popular saying, which always seems to be only a matter of courtesy, they then fulfilled in deed, departing as their offscouring. 7.22.8 So the best of our brethren departed from life in this manner, some presbyters and deacons and some of the laity, being highly praised, so that this form of death, coming about through great piety and strong faith, seems to be in no way inferior to martyrdom. 7.22.9 And taking up the bodies of the saints in open hands and in their bosoms, closing their eyes and shutting their mouths, carrying them on their shoulders and laying them out, clinging to them, embracing them, adorning them with washings and garments, after a little while received the same treatment, those who were left always following those who went before them. 7.22.10 But the Gentiles did the very opposite. They thrust away those who began to be sick, and fled from their dearest, and cast them into the roads half-dead, and cast out dead bodies as refuse, avoiding the transmission and fellowship of death, which it was not easy to escape even though they contrived much.” 7.22.11 And after this letter too, when peace had been restored in the city, he again sends a festal letter to the brethren in Egypt, and in addition to this he composes others again; and there is also extant one of his on the Sabbath and another on exercise. 7.22.12 And again writing by letter to Hierammon and the brethren in Egypt, and having recounted many other things concerning the wickedness of Decius and those after him, he makes mention of the peace under Gallienus; 7.23.1 but there is nothing like hearing these things, which were as follows: “He then, of his own emperors, having betrayed one and attacked the other, quickly disappeared with all his race and root and branch, but Gallienus was revealed and acknowledged by all, at once an old emperor and a new one, being before them and present after them. 7.23.2 For according to what was said to the prophet Isaiah: Behold, the former things have come to pass, and new things which now shall spring forth. For just as a cloud, running under the sun's rays and for a little while darkening it, shadowed him and appeared in his place, then, when the cloud had passed by or melted away, the sun which had risen before appeared again rising, so Macrianus, having approached and drawn near to the established reign of Gallienus, the one is not, since he never was, but the other is just as he was, 7.23.3 and as if putting off old age

μόνοι πρὸς ἁπάντων διωκόμενοι καὶ θανατούμενοι ἑωρτάσαμεν καὶ τότε, καὶ πᾶς ὁ τῆς καθ' ἕκαστον θλίψεως τόπος πανηγυρικὸν ἡμῖν γέγονε χωρίον, ἀγρὸς ἐρημία ναῦς πανδοχεῖον δεσμωτήριον, φαιδροτάτην δὲ πασῶν ἤγαγον ἑορτὴν οἱ τέλειοι μάρτυρες, εὐωχηθέντες ἐν οὐρανῷ· 7.22.5 μετὰ δὲ ταῦτα πόλεμος καὶ λιμὸς ἐπέλαβεν, ἃ τοῖς ἔθνεσι συνδιηνέγκαμεν, μόνοι μὲν ὑποστάντες ὅσα ἡμῖν ἐλυμήναντο, παραπολαύσαντες δὲ καὶ ὧν ἀλλήλους εἰργάσαντό τε καὶ πεπόνθασιν, καὶ τῇ Χριστοῦ πάλιν ἐνηυφράνθημεν εἰρήνῃ, ἣν μόνοις ἡμῖν δέδωκεν· 7.22.6 βραχυτάτης δὲ ἡμῶν τε καὶ αὐτῶν τυχόντων ἀναπνοῆς, ἐπικατέσκηψεν ἡ νόσος αὕτη, πρᾶγμα φόβου τε παντὸς φοβερώτερον ἐκείνοις καὶ συμφορᾶς ἧστινος οὖν σχετλιώτερον καὶ ὡς ἴδιός τις αὐτῶν ἀπήγγειλεν συγγραφεύς, πρᾶγμα μόνον δὴ τῶν πάντων ἐλπίδος κρεῖσσον γενόμενον, ἡμῖν δὲ οὐ τοιοῦτο μέν, γυμνάσιον δὲ καὶ δοκίμιον οὐδενὸς τῶν ἄλλων ἔλαττον. ἀπέσχετο μὲν γὰρ οὐδὲ ἡμῶν, πολλὴ δὲ ἐξῆλθεν εἰς τὰ ἔθνη». 7.22.7 τούτοις ἑξῆς ἐπιφέρει λέγων· «οἱ γοῦν πλεῖστοι τῶν ἀδελφῶν ἡμῶν δι' ὑπερβάλλουσαν ἀγάπην καὶ φιλαδελφίαν ἀφειδοῦντες ἑαυτῶν καὶ ἀλλήλων ἐχόμενοι, ἐπισκοποῦντες ἀφυλάκτως τοὺς νοσοῦντας, λιπαρῶς ὑπηρετούμενοι, θεραπεύοντες ἐν Χριστῷ, συναπηλλάττοντο ἐκείνοις ἀσμενέστατα, τοῦ παρ' ἑτέρων ἀναπιμπλάμενοι πάθους καὶ τὴν νόσον ἐφ' ἑαυτοὺς ἕλκοντες ἀπὸ τῶν πλησίον καὶ ἑκόντες ἀναμασσόμενοι τὰς ἀλγηδόνας. καὶ πολλοὶ νοσοκομήσαντες καὶ ῥώσαντες ἑτέρους, ἐτελεύτησαν αὐτοί, τὸν ἐκείνων θάνατον εἰς ἑαυτοὺς μεταστησάμενοι καὶ τὸ δημῶδες ῥῆμα, μόνης ἀεὶ δοκοῦν φιλοφροσύνης ἔχεσθαι, ἔργῳ δὴ τότε πληροῦντες, ἀπιόντες αὐτῶν περίψημα. 7.22.8 οἱ γοῦν ἄριστοι τῶν παρ' ἡμῖν ἀδελφῶν τοῦτον τὸν τρόπον ἐξεχώρησαν τοῦ βίου, πρεσβύτεροί τέ τινες καὶ διάκονοι καὶ τῶν ἀπὸ τοῦ λαοῦ, λίαν ἐπαινούμενοι, ὡς καὶ τοῦ θανάτου τοῦτο τὸ εἶδος, διὰ πολλὴν εὐσέβειαν καὶ πίστιν ἰσχυρὰν γινόμενον, μηδὲν ἀποδεῖν μαρτυρίου δοκεῖν. 7.22.9 καὶ τὰ σώματα δὲ τῶν ἁγίων ὑπτίαις χερσὶ καὶ κόλποις ὑπολαμβάνοντες καθαιροῦντές τε ὀφθαλμοὺς καὶ στόματα συγκλείοντες ὠμοφοροῦντές τε καὶ διατιθέντες, προσκολλώμενοι, συμπλεκόμενοι, λουτροῖς τε καὶ περιστολαῖς κατακοσμοῦντες, μετὰ μικρὸν ἐτύγχανον τῶν ἴσων, ἀεὶ τῶν ὑπολειπομένων ἐφεπομένων τοῖς πρὸ αὐτῶν. 7.22.10 τὰ δέ γε ἔθνη πᾶν τοὐναντίον· καὶ νοσεῖν ἀρχομένους ἀπωθοῦντο καὶ ἀπέφευγον τοὺς φιλτάτους κἀν ταῖς ὁδοῖς ἐρρίπτουν ἡμιθνῆτας καὶ νεκροὺς ἀτάφους ἀπεσκυβαλίζοντο, τὴν τοῦ θανάτου διάδοσιν καὶ κοινωνίαν ἐκτρεπόμενοι, ἣν οὐκ ἦν καὶ πολλὰ μηχανωμένοις ἐκκλῖναι ῥᾴδιον». 7.22.11 μετὰ δὲ καὶ ταύτην τὴν ἐπιστολήν, εἰρηνευσάντων τῶν κατὰ τὴν πόλιν, τοῖς κατ' Αἴγυπτον ἀδελφοῖς ἑορταστικὴν αὖθις ἐπιστέλλει γραφήν, καὶ ἐπὶ ταύτῃ πάλιν ἄλλας διατυποῦται· φέρεται δέ τις αὐτοῦ καὶ περὶ σαββάτου καὶ ἄλλη περὶ γυμνασίου. 7.22.12 Ἑρμάμμωνι δὲ πάλιν καὶ τοῖς κατ' Αἴγυπτον ἀδελφοῖς δι' ἐπιστολῆς ὁμιλῶν πολλά τε ἄλλα περὶ τῆς ∆εκίου καὶ τῶν μετ' αὐτὸν διεξελθὼν κακοτροπίας, τῆς κατὰ τὸν Γαλλιῆνον εἰρήνης ἐπιμιμνήσκεται· 7.23.1 οὐδὲν δὲ οἷον τὸ καὶ τούτων ὧδέ πως ἐχόντων ἀκοῦσαι· «ἐκεῖνος μὲν οὖν τῶν ἑαυτοῦ βασιλέων τὸν μὲν προέμενος, τῷ δὲ ἐπιθέμενος, παγγενεῖ ταχέως καὶ πρόρριζος ἐξηφανίσθη, ἀνεδείχθη δὲ καὶ συνανωμολογήθη παρὰ πάντων ὁ Γαλλιῆνος, παλαιὸς ἅμα βασιλεὺς καὶ νέος, πρῶτος ὢν καὶ μετ' ἐκείνους παρών. 7.23.2 κατὰ γὰρ τὸ ῥηθὲν πρὸς τὸν προφήτην Ἡσαΐαν· τὰ ἀπ' ἀρχῆς ἰδοὺ ἥκασιν, καὶ καινὰ ἃ νῦν ἀνατελεῖ. ὥσπερ γὰρ νέφος τὰς ἡλιακὰς ἀκτῖνας ὑποδραμὸν καὶ πρὸς ὀλίγον ἐπηλυγάσαν ἐσκίασεν αὐτὸν καὶ ἀντ' αὐτοῦ προεφάνη, εἶτα παρελθόντος ἢ διατακέντος τοῦ νέφους, ἐξεφάνη πάλιν ἐπανατείλας ὁ προανατείλας ἥλιος, οὕτω προστὰς καὶ προσπελάσας ἑαυτὸν ὁ Μακριανὸς τῆς ἐφεστώσης Γαλλιήνου βασιλείας, ὃ μὲν οὐκ ἔστιν, ἐπεὶ μηδὲ ἦν, ὃ δὲ ἔστιν ὁμοίως ὥσπερ ἦν, 7.23.3 καὶ οἷον ἀποθεμένη τὸ γῆρας
