and the Lord casts fire on oil and flax, which the world has not seen nor is able to see (by world I mean those in the world and who think worldly thoughts). Just as a lamp is lit, I speak to you in perceptible terms, when it touches the fire, (239) so too understand me to speak spiritually of touching souls and lighting the divine fire. Before it touches, how will it be lit? And before it is brought near, how will it touch? Indeed, in no way, not at all! But when the lamp is lit and clearly illuminates all, and the oil runs out, will not the lamp be extinguished? Consider for me also another, greater thing, which frightens me more than all! My great lamp shining with abundant oil, and a plentiful wick, a mouse came or something else and either overturned the lamp or, licking little by little, drank the oil and ate the flax and extinguished the flame. But the still more wonderful thing, is that the whole flax, which is called a wick, having fallen into the oil, the fire is immediately extinguished, and my lamp becomes dark, not shining at all; understand my soul as the lamp, the virtues as the oil, and my mind as the wick, and in it the divine fire (240) shining and illuminating the soul together with the whole house of my whole body and all the thoughts and reflections in the house. καί ἐλαίου καί στυπείου πῦρ ἐμβάλλει ὁ ∆εσπότης, ὅ ὁ κόσμος οὐ κατεῖδεν οὐδέ κατιδεῖν ἰσχύει (Κόσμον λέγω τούς ἐν κόσμῳ καί τά κοσμικά φρονοῦντας). Ὥσπερ ἅπτει δέ ὁ λύχνος, ἐν τοῖς αἰσθητοῖς σοι λέγω, ὅταν τῷ πυρί προσψαύσῃ, (239) οὕτω καί πνευματικῶς μοι νόει λέγειν ταῖς ψυχαῖς προσψαύειν καί ἀνάπτειν πῦρ τό θεῖον. Πρίν προσψαύσῃ, πῶς ἀνάψει; Πρίν βληθῇ δέ, πῶς προσψαύσει; Ὄντως οὐδαμῶς, οὐδ᾿ ὅλως! Ὅταν δέ ὁ λύχνος ἅπτῃ καί τρανῶς φωτίζῃ πάντας, καί τό ἔλαιον ἐκλείψῃ, οὐ σβεσθήσεται ὁ λύχνος; Θέα μοι καί ἄλλο μεῖζον, ὅ φοβεῖ με πλέον πάντων! Φαίνοντά μου λύχνον μέγα ἐν ἐλαίου δαψιλείᾳ, ἀφθονίᾳ τε στυπείου, μῦς ἐλθών ἤ ἕτερόν τι ἤ κατέστρεψε τόν λύχνον ἤ κατά μικρόν ἐκλεῖξαν ἔπιε τό ἔλαιόν τε ἔφαγέ τε τό στυπεῖον καί τήν λαμπάδα ἔσβεσε. Τό δ᾿ ἔτι θαυμαστότερον, ὅτι τό στυπεῖον ὅλον, ὅπερ θρυαλλίς καλεῖται, ἐμπεσόν ἐν τῷ ἐλαίῳ σβέννυται τό πῦρ εὐθέως, καί ὑπάρχει μοι ὁ λύχνος σκοτεινός, ὅλως μή φαίνων˙ λύχνον νόει τήν ψυχήν μου, ἔλαιον τάς ἀρετάς δέ, τόν δέ νοῦν μου θρυαλλίδα, ἐν αὐτῷ δέ πῦρ τό θεῖον (240) φαῖνον καί καταφωτίζον τήν ψυχήν ὁμοῦ καί οἶκον ὅλον ὅλου σώματός μου καί τούς ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ πάντας λογισμούς καί ἐνθυμήσεις.
