of the poor provokes the one who made him.” You shall not speak evil: “For do not love,” he says, “to speak evil, lest you be rooted out.” Nor shall you bear a grudge: “For the ways of the grudge-bearing lead to death.” You shall not be double-minded nor double-tongued: “For a man’s own lips are a strong snare for him.” And: “A talkative man will not be guided aright upon the earth.” Your word shall not be empty: “For you will give an account for every idle word.” You shall not lie: “For you will destroy,” he says, “all who speak lies.” You shall not be covetous nor a plunderer: “For woe,” he says, “to the one who covets his neighbor with evil covetousness.” You shall not be a hypocrite, lest you place your portion with them. You shall not be malicious nor arrogant: “For the Lord opposes the arrogant.” You shall not show partiality in judgment, because: “The judgment is the Lord’s.” You shall not hate any man. “You shall surely rebuke your brother, and not bear sin because of him.” And: “Rebuke a wise man, and he will love you.” Flee from every evil and from everything like it: “For abstain,” he says, “from what is unjust, and terror will not come near you.” Do not become angry, nor envious, nor jealous, nor frenzied, nor rash, lest you suffer the fate of Cain and of Saul and of Joab: for the one killed his brother Abel because he was found to be preferred by God and because his sacrifice was accepted, the other persecuted the holy David who had conquered Goliath the Philistine, being jealous at the praise of the dancing women, and the other killed the two generals, Abner of Israel and Amasa of Judah. Do not be an augur, for it leads to idolatry: “For divination,” says Samuel, “is a sin,” and “There shall be no augury in Jacob, nor divination in Israel.” You shall not be an enchanter or one who purifies your son, you shall not practice divination by sounds or by signs, nor shall you practice augury, nor shall you learn wicked things; for the law forbade all these things. Do not be a desirer of evil things, for you will be led into an immoderation of sins. You shall not be foul-mouthed nor high-eyed nor a drunkard; for from these things come fornication and adultery. Μὴ γίνου ἐπιθυμητὴς κακῶν, ὁδηγηθήσῃ γὰρ εἰς ἀμετρίαν ἁμαρτημάτων. Oὐκ ἔσῃ αἰσχρολόγος οὐδὲ ·ιψόφθαλμος οὐδὲ μέθυσος· ἐκ γὰρ τούτων πορνεῖαι καὶ μοιχεῖαι γίνονται. Μὴ γίνου φιλάργυρος, ἵνα μὴ ἀντὶ Θεοῦ δουλεύσῃς τῷ μαμωνᾷ. Μὴ γίνου κενόδοξος μηδὲ μετέωρος μηδὲ ὑψηλόφρων, ἐκ γὰρ τούτων ἁπάντων ἀλαζο νεῖαι γεννῶνται· μνήσθητι τοῦ εἰπόντος· «Κύριε, οὐχ ὑψώθη ἡ καρδία μου, οὐδὲ ἐμετεωρίσθησαν οἱ ὀφθαλμοί μου, οὐδὲ ἐπορεύθην ἐν μεγάλοις οὐδὲ ἐν θαυμασίοις ὑπὲρ ἐμέ· εἰ μὴ
