the kingdom, having also cleansed itself of its former wickedness, now blossoms more vigorously and is seen and heard farther off and spreads everywhere.” 7.23.4 Then, next, he indicates also the time at which he wrote these things, through these words: “And again it comes to me to consider the days of the imperial years. For I see that those most impious men, once named, not long after have become nameless, but the more holy and God-loving one, having passed the seven-year period, is now completing his ninth year, in which we shall celebrate.” 7.24.1 In addition to all these, he also diligently composed the two books *On the Promises*, the occasion for which was Nepos, a bishop of those in Egypt, who taught that the promises made to the saints in the divine scriptures would be fulfilled in a more Jewish manner, and supposed that there would be a certain millennium of bodily luxury upon this dry land. 7.24.2 So, thinking to establish his own opinion from the Apocalypse of John, he composed a certain treatise on this subject which he entitled *A Refutation of the Allegorists*. 7.24.3 To this Dionysius objects in his *On the Promises*, in the first book setting forth his own opinion which he held concerning the dogma, and in the second discussing the Apocalypse of John; where, mentioning Nepos at the beginning, he writes these things about him: 7.24.4 “But since they bring forward a certain treatise of Nepos, on which they rely greatly as if it proves irrefutably that the kingdom of Christ will be on earth, in many other respects I accept and love Nepos, for his faith and his industry and his study of the scriptures and his great psalmody, in which many of the brethren still rejoice to this day, and I hold the man in very great reverence, all the more since he has gone to his rest. But truth is dear and to be honored above all; and one must praise and agree ungrudgingly if anything is said correctly, but examine and correct anything that appears to have been written unsoundly. 7.24.5 And if he were present and teaching by word of mouth only, unwritten discussion would have been sufficient, persuading and reconciling opponents through question and answer; but since a writing has been published, which seems to some most persuasive, and since certain teachers consider the Law and the Prophets as nothing, and have neglected to follow the Gospels, and have made light of the epistles of the apostles, and proclaim the teaching of this treatise as some great and hidden mystery, and do not allow our simpler brethren to think anything lofty and magnificent, either concerning the glorious and truly divine appearing of our Lord, or of our own resurrection from the dead and our gathering to him and being made like him, but persuade them to hope for small and mortal things, and such as are now, in the kingdom of God, it is necessary for us also to dispute with our brother Nepos as if he were present.” 7.24.6 To this, after other things, he adds, saying: “When I was, therefore, in the Arsenoite nome, where, as you know, this doctrine was prevalent for a long time, so that schisms and apostasies of whole churches had occurred, I called together the presbyters and teachers of the brethren in the villages, with those of the brethren who wished to be present, and I urged that an examination of the doctrine be held publicly, 7.24.7 and when they brought me this book as some invincible weapon and wall, I sat with them for three successive days from morning until evening and attempted to correct what was written; 7.24.8 and there I greatly admired the steadfastness and love of truth and facility in following and intelligence of the brethren, as we conducted the questions and the difficulties and the agreements in order and with forbearance, refusing to cling in every way and contentiously to opinions once held, even if they did not appear to be correct, and not shrinking from counter-arguments, but as far as possible attempting to deal with and establish the subjects proposed,

ἡ βασιλεία καὶ τὴν προοῦσαν ἀνακαθηραμένη κακίαν, ἀκμαιότερον νῦν ἐπανθεῖ καὶ πορρώτερον ὁρᾶται καὶ ἀκούεται καὶ διαφοιτᾷ πανταχοῦ». 7.23.4 εἶθ' ἑξῆς καὶ τὸν χρόνον, καθ' ὃν ταῦτ' ἔγραφεν, διὰ τούτων σημαίνει· «καί μοι πάλιν τὰς ἡμέρας τῶν βασιλικῶν ἐτῶν ἔπεισι σκοπεῖν. ὁρῶ γάρ, ὡς ὀνομασθέντες μὲν οἱ ἀσεβέστατοι μετ' οὐ πολὺ γεγόνασιν ἀνώνυμοι, ὁ δὲ ὁσιώτερος καὶ φιλοθεώτερος ὑπερβὰς τὴν ἑπταετηρίδα, νῦν ἐνιαυτὸν ἔνατον διανύει, ἐν ᾧ ἡμεῖς ἑορτάσωμεν». 7.24.1 Ἐπὶ τούτοις ἅπασιν σπουδάζεται αὐτῷ καὶ τὰ Περὶ ἐπαγγελιῶν δύο συγγράμματα, ἡ δ' ὑπόθεσις αὐτῷ Νέπως ἦν, ἐπίσκοπος τῶν κατ' Αἴγυπτον, Ἰουδαϊκώτερον τὰς ἐπηγγελμένας τοῖς ἁγίοις ἐν ταῖς θείαις γραφαῖς ἐπαγγελίας ἀποδοθήσεσθαι διδάσκων καί τινα χιλιάδα ἐτῶν τρυφῆς σωματικῆς ἐπὶ τῆς ξηρᾶς ταύτης ἔσεσθαι ὑποτιθέμενος. 7.24.2 δόξας γοῦν οὗτος ἐκ τῆς Ἀποκαλύψεως Ἰωάννου τὴν ἰδίαν κρατύνειν ὑπόληψιν, Ἔλεγχον ἀλληγοριστῶν λόγον τινὰ περὶ τούτου συντάξας ἐπέγραψεν· 7.24.3 πρὸς ὃν ὁ ∆ιονύσιος ἐν τοῖς Περὶ ἐπαγγελιῶν ἐνίσταται, διὰ μὲν τοῦ προτέρου τὴν αὐτοῦ γνώμην ἣν εἶχεν περὶ τοῦ δόγματος, παρατιθέμενος, διὰ δὲ τοῦ δευτέρου περὶ τῆς Ἀποκαλύψεως Ἰωάννου διαλαμβάνων· ἔνθα τοῦ Νέπωτος κατὰ τὴν ἀρχὴν μνημονεύσας, ταῦτα περὶ αὐτοῦ γράφει· 7.24.4 «ἐπεὶ δὲ σύνταγμά τι προκομίζουσιν Νέπωτος, ᾧ λίαν ἐπερείδονται ὡς ἀναντιρρήτως ἀποδεικνύντι τὴν τοῦ Χριστοῦ βασιλείαν ἐπὶ γῆς ἔσεσθαι, ἐν ἄλλοις μὲν πολλοῖς ἀποδέχομαι καὶ ἀγαπῶ Νέπωτα τῆς τε πίστεως καὶ τῆς φιλοπονίας καὶ τῆς ἐν ταῖς γραφαῖς διατριβῆς καὶ τῆς πολλῆς ψαλμῳδίας, ᾗ μέχρι νῦν πολλοὶ τῶν ἀδελφῶν εὐθυμοῦνται, καὶ πάνυ δι' αἰδοῦς ἄγω τὸν ἄνθρωπον, ταύτῃ μᾶλλον ᾗ προανεπαύσατο· ἀλλὰ φίλη γὰρ καὶ προτιμοτάτη πάντων ἡ ἀλήθεια, ἐπαινεῖν τε χρὴ καὶ συναινεῖν ἀφθόνως, εἴ τι ὀρθῶς λέγοιτο, ἐξετάζειν δὲ καὶ διευθύνειν, εἴ τι μὴ φαίνοιτο ὑγιῶς ἀναγεγραμμένον. 7.24.5 καὶ πρὸς μὲν παρόντα καὶ ψιλῷ λόγῳ δογματίζοντα αὐτάρκης ἦν ἂν ἡ ἄγραφος ὁμιλία, δι' ἐρωτήσεως καὶ ἀποκρίσεως πείθουσα καὶ συμβιβάζουσα τοὺς ἀντιδιατιθεμένους· γραφῆς δὲ ἐκκειμένης, ὡς δοκεῖ τισιν, πιθανωτάτης καί τινων διδασκάλων τὸν μὲν νόμον καὶ τοὺς προφήτας τὸ μηδὲν ἡγουμένων καὶ τὸ τοῖς εὐαγγελίοις ἕπεσθαι παρέντων καὶ τὰς τῶν ἀποστόλων ἐπιστολὰς ἐκφαυλισάντων, τὴν δὲ τοῦ συγγράμματος τούτου διδασκαλίαν ὡς μέγα δή τι καὶ κεκρυμμένον μυστήριον κατεπαγγελλομένων καὶ τοὺς ἁπλουστέρους ἀδελφοὺς ἡμῶν οὐδὲν ἐώντων ὑψηλὸν καὶ μεγαλεῖον φρονεῖν οὔτε περὶ τῆς ἐνδόξου καὶ ἀληθῶς ἐνθέου τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν ἐπιφανείας οὔτε τῆς ἡμετέρας ἐκ νεκρῶν ἀναστάσεως καὶ τῆς πρὸς αὐτὸν ἐπισυναγωγῆς καὶ ὁμοιώσεως, ἀλλὰ μικρὰ καὶ θνητὰ καὶ οἷα τὰ νῦν, ἐλπίζειν ἀναπειθόντων ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ τοῦ θεοῦ, ἀναγκαῖον καὶ ἡμᾶς ὡς πρὸς παρόντα τὸν ἀδελφὸν ἡμῶν διαλεχθῆναι Νέπωτα». 7.24.6 τούτοις μεθ' ἕτερα ἐπιφέρει λέγων· «ἐν μὲν οὖν τῷ Ἀρσενοΐτῃ γενόμενος, ἔνθα, ὡς οἶδας, πρὸ πολλοῦ τοῦτο ἐπεπόλαζεν τὸ δόγμα, ὡς καὶ σχίσματα καὶ ἀποστασίας ὅλων ἐκκλησιῶν γεγονέναι, συγκαλέσας τοὺς πρεσβυτέρους καὶ διδασκάλους τῶν ἐν ταῖς κώμαις ἀδελφῶν, παρόντων καὶ τῶν βουλομένων ἀδελφῶν, δημοσίᾳ τὴν ἐξέτασιν ποιήσασθαι τοῦ λόγου προετρεψάμην, 7.24.7 καὶ τοῦτό μοι προσαγαγόντων τὸ βιβλίον ὥς τι ὅπλον καὶ τεῖχος ἄμαχον, συγκαθεσθεὶς αὐτοῖς τριῶν ἑξῆς ἡμερῶν ἐξ ἕω μέχρις ἑσπέρας, διευθύνειν ἐπειράθην τὰ γεγραμμένα· 7.24.8 ἔνθα καὶ τὸ εὐσταθὲς καὶ τὸ φιλάληθες καὶ τὸ εὐπαρακολούθητον καὶ συνετὸν ὑπερηγάσθην τῶν ἀδελφῶν, ὡς ἐν τάξει καὶ μετ' ἐπιεικείας τὰς ἐρωτήσεις καὶ τὰς ἐπαπορήσεις καὶ τὰς συγκαταθέσεις ἐποιούμεθα, τὸ μὲν ἐκ παντὸς τρόπου καὶ φιλονείκως τῶν ἅπαξ δοξάντων περιέχεσθαι, εἰ καὶ μὴ φαίνοιτο ὀρθῶς ἔχοντα, παραιτησάμενοι, μήτε δὲ τὰς ἀντιλογίας ὑποστελλόμενοι, ἀλλ' ἐς ὅσον οἷόν τε, τῶν προκειμένων ἐπιβατεύειν καὶ κρατύνειν αὐτὰ πειρώμενοι,
