Therefore, the Lord Jesus, our God, who had done no wrong, was struck, so that sinners who imitate him might not only receive forgiveness of their sins, but also become partakers of his Godhead through their obedience. And he who does not accept this with humility of heart, as if ashamed to imitate the sufferings of the Master, Christ will also be ashamed of him before the angels and his Father who is in heaven. And what is said is this: He, being God, became man for our sake. He was slapped, spat upon, and crucified, as it were, teaching and saying to each of us through what He, who is impassible in his Godhead, suffered: "If you wish," He says, "O man, to become God and to attain eternal life and to be with me, which your forefather once rightly desired but did not attain, then humble yourself as I was humbled for you. And putting away the boastful and arrogant demonic mindset, accept slaps, accept spitting, accept blows, (351) and endure these things until death and be not ashamed. But if you are ashamed to suffer for my commandments, as I, who am God, suffered for you, I too will consider it a shame for you to be with me at my coming with glory and I will say to my angels: 'This man was ashamed of me in my humiliation and did not deign to abandon the glory of the world and become like me, and now that he himself has been stripped of corruptible glory, and I have been glorified in the immortal glory of my Father, I am utterly ashamed even to look at him! Therefore, let him be cast out, let him be taken away like the impious, that he may not see the glory of the Lord!'" These things, then, will be heard by those who seemingly keep all the commandments, but because of shame and fear of men do not accept the insults and dishonors or reproaches brought upon them by them, nor endure the slaps nor the blows from them.
Tremble, O men, and be terrified, and the insults that God endured for our salvation, you too endure with joy! God is slapped by a most vile slave, giving you an example of victory, and you do not deign to suffer this from your fellow man? Are you ashamed to become an imitator of God, and how will you reign with him and be glorified with him in the kingdom of heaven, not having endured him? For if He, for his part, had been ashamed to become man for you and had left you lying in the fall of transgression (352) until the present, would you not have remained, wretched one, with the faithless and the impious in the depths of Hades? Do you believe that Christ is God? "Yes," he says. If then you believe that He is the God who made heaven and earth, who without being emptied was emptied from the bosom of the Father, who came down upon the earth from the infinite height of his Godhead and his ineffable glory and became a humble and poor man for you, you, being clay and ash and dust, do you not deign to come down from your supposedly high throne and be humbled before your brother, who stands below, at least in this visible world, but perhaps is superior to you in virtues? Will you not cast off the garment that seems to be splendid, being put to shame by his hair-shirt and humility? Will you not disregard all things that are truly a plaything and rather a mask of ugliness and not a glory of splendor? Will you not become in all things like your Creator and God, humbling yourself with your brothers? If then you do not endure to be made like him, you are, without realizing it, making yourself greater and more glorious than Him, showing yourself to us as another Annas or Caiaphas or Pilate and tyrant, wanting the Creator of the universe to stand beside you not as one seated with you but as one of the condemned.
These things, then, are for the rich and the rulers and those who sit above others and raise their eyebrows with a scornful attitude. But what of those who have supposedly left all things and become poor for the sake of the kingdom of heaven? What then shall we say? Behold, you have become poor, brother, and you have imitated (353) the
