nourished in royal courts, no one else; but you will esteem the one living in piety, in wisdom, in the fear of God, not only because of the things to come, but also because of these very present things. For even here this one is more powerful than that one. For if ever sickness should strike, the one having the purple robe is in no way helped toward the consolation of his illness by his bodyguards and his great pomp, but even with servants, and fathers, and everyone present, and with golden garments placed over and under him, he lies as if burning in a furnace; but the one living in piety and fearing God, with no father, no servant, no one else present, looking up to heaven not often, but even two or three times, has extinguished that entire furnace. And one might see this happening both in tribulations and in all unexpected events, those in wealth and high station being disturbed, but those in piety and wisdom bearing all things with tranquility. And before all these things, even if nothing dreadful occurs, the conscience of the one who fears God is full of greater and purer pleasure than the soul of the wealthy one. For that man, even if he enjoys external food, will be in a worse state than all those living in famine, reminding himself of his own evils and living with a wicked conscience; but this one, even if he lacks necessary food, will be more cheerful than those who enjoy every luxury, being nourished by good hopes, and he expects the rewards of his own right actions each day. But lest by prolonging the discourse I seem to be troublesome, leaving it to the more 55.167 industrious to select each lesson and to investigate the power stored up in it, I will end the discourse here, having exhorted your love to these things: not to enter here simply, but to receive the lessons like pearls and preserve them, and to meditate on them at home continually, and to say all these things to friends and to wives; and if a passion should disturb, or a desire should arise, or anger, or any other most irrational passion whatsoever, to chant these things continuously; so that both in the present life we may enjoy much calm, and in the life to come we may attain the eternal good things, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom and with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, honor, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. The Prophet indeed speaks this psalm; but he speaks it not from his own person, but from the person of the Maccabees, narrating and proclaiming beforehand the things that would be in that time. For such are the prophets; they run through all times, the past, the present, the future. But who these Maccabees are, and what they suffered, and what they accomplished, it is necessary to say first, so that what is said about the subject may become clearer. For these men, when Antiochus, who is called Epiphanes, came and corrupted all things, and forced many of the people then to forsake the ancestral way of life, remained unharmed by those temptations; and when the heavy war was blowing, and they could accomplish nothing more,
