For when the mortal mind is made to disappear by the immortal mind, and death is pursued by life, the soul then, as if risen from the dead, confessedly sees itself, just as those who have risen from sleep see themselves, and it recognizes God who raised it, whom contemplating and to whom giving thanks, it worships and glorifies His infinite goodness. But the body has no inspiration or motion or thought whatsoever towards its own desires, but becomes entirely dead and breathless in these things.

There are times when a person even often forgets, so to speak, the things according to nature, because the soul is always dwelling intellectually in the things beyond nature. And reasonably so; "For walk in the Spirit," he says, "and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh." For the flesh, as has been said, becoming dead through the visitation of the Spirit, will leave us undisturbed for the rest of our lives, and you will live unhindered, because "the law is not made for a righteous man," according to the divine apostle, as he is one who clearly lives above the law. "For where," he says, "(358) the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty," liberty certainly from the bondage of the law. For the law is a guide and a schoolmaster and a leader and a teacher of righteousness in saying: "You shall do this and that," and again: "You shall not do this and that," but grace and truth are not so, but how? "And you shall do and say all things according to the grace given to you and speaking in you," as it is written: "And they shall all be taught of God," not learning what is good through letters and inscriptions but being taught this in the Holy Spirit, nor in word only but in the light of the word and in the word of light being mystically initiated into divine things. "For then you shall be teachers both to yourselves and to your neighbors," he says, "and not only that, but also the light of the world and the salt of the earth."

Those therefore before grace, being under the law, were sitting under its shadow; but those who came into being after grace and the day were freed from the shadow, that is, the bondage of the law, having clearly become above it, as by a kind of ladder, of the evangelical life, being lifted up on high and living with the lawgiver, being themselves lawgivers rather than guardians of the law.

Is there then one who has ears to hear, that he may be able to perceive the power of the things spoken by the Spirit? Is there now one who possesses the mind of Christ, that he may understand well and in a manner worthy of God the things written by this one? (359) Will one be found now who has Christ speaking in him, that he may be able to interpret well the mysteries hidden in the words? "For we speak wisdom," he says, "not of this age, which is passing away, but wisdom in a mystery, which is hidden" from the many, but to us exceedingly revealed and known, to those who are instructed in the fear of God and always look to Him.For we do not speak what we do not know, but we testify to what we have seen, that the light already shines in the darkness, both by night and by day, both within and without; within in our hearts, and without in the mind, shining around us without evening, unchangeably, unalterably, without form, speaking, working, living and giving life, and making into light those who are illumined. We testify that God is light, and all those deemed worthy to see Him have beheld Him as light, and those who have received Him have received Him as light, because the light of His glory goes before Him and without light it is impossible for Him to appear, and those who have not seen His light have not seen Him either, because He is light, and those who have not received the light have not yet received grace; for those who have received grace have received the light of God and God, just as the light, Christ, said: "I will dwell in them and walk among them."

But those who have not yet experienced this or been deemed worthy, all such are under the law before grace, (360) slaves and disciples of slaves and hearers of the law and children

Τοῦ θνητοῦ γάρ φρονήματος ὑπό τοῦ ἀθανάτου νοός ἐξαφανιζομένου καί τῆς νεκρότητος ὑπό τῆς ζωῆς διωκομένης ἡ ψυχή τότε, ὡς ἐκ νεκρῶν ἀναστᾶσα, ἑαυτήν ὁμολογουμένως ὁρᾷ, καθάπερ οἱ ἐξ ὕπνου ἀναστάντες ἑαυτούς βλέπουσι, καί τόν αὐτήν ἀναστήσαντα ἐπιγινώσκει Θεόν, ὅν κατανοοῦσα καί ᾧ εὐχαριστοῦσα, προσκυνεῖ καί δοξολογεῖ τήν ἄπειρον αὐτοῦ ἀγαθότητα. Τό δέ σῶμα οὐκ ἔχει πρός τάς ἰδίας ἐπιθυμίας τήν οἱανοῦν ἔμπνευσιν ἤ κίνησιν ἤ ἐνθύμησιν, ἀλλά νεκρόν ὅλον καί ἄπνουν ἐν τούτοις γίνεται.

Ἔστιν ὅτε καί αὐτῶν εἰπεῖν πολλάκις τῶν κατά φύσιν ὁ ἄνθρωπος ἐπιλανθάνεται τηνικαῦτα διά τό ἐν τοῖς ὑπέρ φύσιν ἀεί ἐνδιατρίβειν νοερῶς τήν ψυχήν. Καί εἰκότως· "Πνεύματι γάρ, φησί, περιπατεῖτε καί ἐπιθυμίαν σαρκός οὐ μή τελέσητε". Νεκρά γάρ ἡ σάρξ, ὥσπερ εἴρηται, διά τῆς ἐπιφοιτήσεως γινομένη τοῦ Πνεύματος, ἀνενοχλήτους ἡμᾶς τοῦ λοιποῦ ἐάσει καί ἀνεμποδίστως βιώσετε, ἐπειδή "νόμος τῷ δικαίῳ οὐ κεῖται", κατά τόν θεῖον ἀπόστολον, ὡς ὑπέρ νόμον δηλονότι πολιτευομένῳ. "Ὅπου γάρ, φησί, (358) Πνεῦμα Κυρίου, ἐκεῖ ἐλευθερία", ἐλευθερία ἐκ τῆς τοῦ νόμου πάντως δουλείας. Ὁ γάρ νόμος ὁδηγός καί παιδαγωγός καί χειραγωγός καί διδάσκαλος δικαιοσύνης ἐστίν ἐν τῷ λέγειν· "Ποιήσεις τό καί το" καί αὖθις· "Τό καί τό οὐ ποιήσεις", ἡ δέ χάρις καί ἡ ἀλήθεια οὐχ οὕτως, ἀλλά πῶς; "Καί ποιήσεις πάντα καί εἴπῃς κατά τήν δοθεῖσάν σοι χάριν καί λαλοῦσαν ἐν σοί" καθά γέγραπται" "Καί ἔσονται πάντες διδακτοί Θεοῦ", οὐ διά γραμμάτων καί χαραγμάτων τό καλόν ἐμανθάνοντες ἀλλ᾿ ἐν Ἁγίῳ Πνεύματι τοῦτο ἐκδιδασκόμενοι, οὐδέ ἐν λόγῳ μόνῳ ἀλλ᾿ ἐν φωτί λόγου καί ἐν λόγῳ φωτός μυστικῶς τά θεῖα μυούμενοι. "Τηνικαῦτα γάρ καί ἑαυτοῖς καί τοῖς πλησίον, φησί, διδάσκαλοι ἔσεσθε, οὐ μήν ἀλλά καί φῶς τοῦ κόσμου καί ἅλας τῆς γῆς".

Οἱ οὖν πρό τῆς χάριτος ὡς ὑπό νόμον ὄντες, καί ὑπό τήν αὐτοῦ σκιάν ὑπῆρχον καθήμενοι· οἱ δέ μετά τήν χάριν καί ἡμέραν γενόμενοι, τῆς σκιᾶς ἤτοι τῆς δουλείας τοῦ νόμου ἠλευθερώθησαν, ὑπεράνω δηλονότι γεγονότες αὐτοῦ, ὡς διά κλίμακός τινος, τῆς εὐαγγελικῆς πολιτείας, εἰς ὕψος ἀρθέντες καί τῷ νομοθέτῃ συμβιοτεύοντες, νομοθέται καί αὐτοί μᾶλλον ὄντες ἤ νόμου φύλακες.

Ἆρά γε ἐστίν ὅς ἔχει ὦτα ἀκούειν, ἵνα δυνηθῇ τῶν ὑπό τοῦ Πνεύματος λεγομένων ἐνωτισθῆναι τήν δύναμιν; Ἆρα καί νῦν ἐστιν ὁ νοῦν κεκτημένος Χριστοῦ, ἵνα νοήσῃ καλῶς καί θεοπρεπῶς τά ὑπό τούτου γραφόμενα; (359) Ἆρα καί νῦν εὑρεθήσεταί τις ἔχων λαλοῦντα ἐν αὐτῷ τόν Χριστόν, ἵνα καλῶς ἰσχύσῃ διερμηνεῦσαι τά ἐγκεκρυμμένα τοῖς λόγοις μυστήρια; "Σοφίαν γάρ λαλοῦμεν, φησίν, οὐ τοῦ αἰῶνος τούτου τήν καταργουμένην, ἀλλά σοφίαν ἐν μυστηρίῳ, τήν ἀποκεκρυμμένην"μέν τοῖς πολλοῖς, ἡμῖν δέ καί λίαν ἀποκαλυπτομένην καί γινωσκομένην, τοῖς τῷ φόβῳ τοῦ Θεοῦ στοιχειουμένοις καί ἀεί βλέπουσι πρός αὐτόν.Οὐ γάρ ὅ οὐκ οἴδαμεν λαλοῦμεν, ἀλλ᾿ ὅ εἴδαμεν μαρτυροῦμεν, ὅτι τό φῶς ἐν τῇ σκοτίᾳ ἤδη φαίνει καί ἐν νυκτί καί ἐν ἡμέρᾳ καί ἐντός καί ἐκτός, ἐντός μέν ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ἡμῶν, ἐκτός δέ ἐν τῷ νοΐ περιλάμπον ἡμᾶς ἀνεσπέρως, ἀτρέπτως, ἀναλλοιώτως, ἀσχηματίστως, λαλοῦν, ἐνεργοῦν, ζῶν καί ζωοποιοῦν καί φῶς τούς λαμπομένους ἀπεργαζόμενον. Ἡμεῖς μαρτυροῦμεν ὅτι ὁ Θεός φῶς ἐστι, καί οἱ αὐτόν καταξιωθέντες ἰδεῖν πάντες ὡς φῶς ἐθεάσαντο, καί οἱ λαβόντες αὐτόν ὡς φῶς αὐτόν ἔλαβον, ὅτι προπορεύεται ἔμπροσθεν αὐτοῦ τό φῶς τῆς δόξης αὐτοῦ καί δίχα φωτός ἀμήχανόν ἐστι φανῆναι αὐτόν, καί οἱ μή ἰδόντες τό φῶς αὐτοῦ οὐδέ ἐκεῖνον εἶδον, ὅτι ἐκεῖνος φῶς ἐστι, καί οἱ μή λαβόντες τό φῶς οὔπω τήν χάριν ἔλαβον· οἱ γάρ τήν χάριν λαβόντες φῶς Θεοῦ καί Θεόν ἔλαβον, καθώς εἶπε τό φῶς, ὁ Χριστός· "Ἐνοικήσω ἐν αὐτοῖς καί ἐμπεριπατήσω".

Οἱ δέ μήπω τοῦτο παθόντες ἤ ἀξιωθέντες, πάντες οἱ τοιοῦτοι ὑπό τόν πρό τῆς χάριτος νόμον εἰσί, (360) δοῦλοι καί μαθηταί δούλων καί ἀκροαταί νόμου καί τέκνα
