he might take them away having gone up on the cross, is the clay, consider also. The waters are temptations which He took upon Himself for our sake, so that His salvation alone might be ours; For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to help those who are being tempted. and the depth of the interpreted waters is, into which those come who do not bear their trials bravely, from which God alone being able to rescue them, they cannot say, "Out of the depths I cried to you, O Lord"† and the following things he asks to be for him for our sake. For nothing startles or frightens him of the things that harm others. If, therefore, having arrived at death itself he begins to be amazed and distressed, it is primarily for our sake, and not least so that He might be shown to have truly become human, that He undertakes these sufferings. 714a Ps 68,15b We must understand "those who hate" as both the demons, and the men who hated him, such as were those saying, "Away, away, crucify him." 715a Ps 68,16 Let not the calamities hold me as a well, so that they become for me completely inescapable. For he states these things figuratively, abiding by his initial premise. For there also he said, "Because waters have entered, even unto my soul," and how, after saying, "And a tempest has overwhelmed me," does he now say "Let not"? Since it is possible for one who has been submerged to swim up again, he prays, concerning the things he was tempted by, not to experience them a second time. 716a Ps 68,17-19 Since from much goodness your mercy will be kind, which I ask to be upon those for whom I make my plea (for you will loose their sins), hear me; as you will look upon me interceding for all, not one by one or two by two, but according to the multitude of your compassions they will be saved and will have much benefit. For you sent me, wishing me to manage these things; for I was not sent to judge but to save the world, by your compassions toward those who receive benefits and by your kind mercy. The addition of "kind" shows that not all mercy is of this sort; for God says concerning the guilty to those who judge, "Your eye shall not spare him, nor shall you have mercy on him." But it is not plausible for these things to be said from the person of the only-begotten being bare of the incarnation, even if the address "servant" sometimes signifies someone's son; but clearly these things he was saying, having emptied himself and taken the form of a servant and having been made like us in all things apart from sin and having made our passions his own (I mean the natural and blameless ones). Attend to my soul and redeem it. For it to be redeemed is for it, not being among the dead, to not be held in Hades but also to redeem those there. These things concerning an irrational soul no one having a mind would say, as it has no life and subsistence of its own. And how could it be redeemed, let those who think thus say; for to be redeemed belongs to a human soul, that is, a rational one. It is possible and plausible to say that the soul of the intercessor is every soul made his own, so that, just as someone is called a man of God, such as Moses and Elijah, so also may be called his soul the one joined to him and having become one spirit with him. For he redeems every such soul by giving for it the one he assumed; for just as the body of Jesus has been given for human bodies, so his soul for their souls, so that the whole man might be given for all by the one who assumed him. Therefore, on account of my enemies who rejoice in the destruction of men, deliver me by raising me from the dead, so that they and the devil who has the power of death might be destroyed, and that the sleeping men might rise to salvation; and I pray on account of the enemies afflicting me who are not unknown; for they are before you. And my affliction is the wearing down of the men for whom you sent me, that I might redeem them from the devil who oppresses them.
