of an ambassador to the emperor of the Romans, Justin. At which time Paul the patriarch of Antioch died, and 416 Euphrasius of Jerusalem was made in his place, who created a great persecution against those called orthodox, killing many. And in the same times the Blue faction was disorderly in all the cities, and they disturbed the cities with stonings and assaults and murders; for they also rose up against the rulers of each city, beginning from Byzantium. and these things were done until the promotion that occurred in Constantinople when Theodotus became urban prefect, formerly comes of the East; who was appointed in the first indiction, and suppressed the populace of the Byzantines, punishing many of the disorderly according to the command of the emperor Justin. among whom he arrested a certain Theodosius, surnamed Zticca, who was a man of great wealth, and an illustris in rank, and having executed this man on his own authority, he did not refer it to the emperor. And having incurred the anger of the emperor, he was removed from his office and stripped of his rank, ordered to go out to the East. and after he reached the East, he fled in fear in the third indiction, taking refuge in Jerusalem, and hid there; and in his place Theodorus, an ex-consul, surnamed Teganistes, was promoted to urban prefect. And in Antioch Ephraimius the Amidene was promoted; who fought against the populist Blues; and for the rest, the popular power of the Blue 417 faction ceased from making disturbances in the cities; and the theatrical shows were suspended, and the dancers from the East and all were exiled, except, however, for the great Alexandria in Egypt. The same emperor forbade the Olympic games from being celebrated in Antioch from the 14th indiction. And 77 Alytarchs served from Afranius until the five hundred and sixty-eighth, from when the Olympics were forbidden. At the same time, when Anatolius the Carian was comes of the East, it happened in Antioch that a great fire occurred by divine wrath; which fire foretold the coming indignation of God. For it burned from the martyrium of Saint Stephen to the praetorium of the magister militum. And after these things there were also many fires in various neighborhoods of the same city, and many houses were burned and many souls perished, and no one knew from where the fire was kindled. At the request of Ephraimius the patriarch of Antioch the same emperor generously gave for the burned areas two centenaria of gold. And in the same time it happened that the so-called Dyrrhachium, a city of the province of Epirus Nova, suffered from a divine disaster, from which the emperor Anastasius came; who also built many things there, 418 having provided them also with the hippodrome. But the emperor Justin provided many things for the renewal of the same city of the Dyrrhachenes, which was formerly called Epidamnus; and likewise he was also generous to the survivors. and in the same time Corinth of Greece also suffered; and the same emperor bestowed many things there too. and in the meantime Anazarbus, a city of Cilicia, suffered from a divine disaster, its fourth suffering; and the same emperor rebuilt it. and at the same time Edessa, a great city of the province of Osroene, was overwhelmed by a divine disaster of river waters, in the evening. As the same river, the one called Skirtos, was passing through the middle of the city, men and all perished along with their houses. And those who survived and lived in the same city said that at another time the same river had also flooded the same city, but it did not destroy it so. since we have learned that in other times the same pattern occurred, and after the wrath had ceased the buildings of splendor near the foundations of the same river
