10.38 Therefore it must be inquired why God made the moon full. Pay attention, for the thought is deep; for having been made on the fourth day, it ought to have appeared as a four-day-old moon; but again, if it were a four-day-old moon, it would not have occupied the extremity of the west; therefore it was found to have a surplus of eleven days; for as a four-day-old moon it appeared as a fifteen-day-old moon. Therefore, the moon has a surplus of eleven days over the sun, not in its creation, but in its appearance; for this reason, what it then gained in excess, it gives back to the sun. For the lunar number, being twenty-nine and a half days for each month, makes the year three hundred and fifty-four days in the twelve months; for if you thus calculate the month from twenty-nine and a half days, the days of the year become three hundred and fifty-four, so that the days which the moon then had in surplus, it gives back to the sun annually. Let the calculator calculate.

10.39 What would the friends of contention say about this too, hearing from him such great agreement with us, concerning the shape of the heaven, both the first and the second, and of the two spaces, which the firmament, being in the middle, created, and that the first heaven is not a sphere, but a vault according to the divine Scripture, and this second, visible heaven was solidified from waters and holds up the waters so that they are not dissolved by the heat of the stars, but are preserved by the coolness of the waters, and that the dew is from the firmament, and concerning the course of the stars, as they run through the northern regions by night, and concerning the angels, as having been created with the heaven and being spectators of the six-day creation of God, and being taught and amazed, and philosophizing about souls as being enclosed in bodies and operating in bodies.

10.40 How will not every mouth speaking unjust things against God and against us who study the divine Scripture according to the ecclesiastical tradition and discourse from it be stopped? For behold, it has been shown that both the prophets and the apostles and evangelists and the Lord Himself and all the divine Scripture, and furthermore also those renowned fathers and teachers among them, whether in truth or in pretense, not disagreeing with ours, but all bear witness to our account, that we have not walked a strange or unknown way of the church, but have said and written all things according to the meaning of the divine Scripture.

10.41 Not only this, but we have also set forth testimonies of the ancients from outside agreeing with our account as a product of tradition. God is witness, then apostles, prophets, the many-named choir of holy fathers, some of the schismatics and not insignificant ancient men from outside, the very nature of things clearly proclaiming the truth. But enough of these things. Therefore, O most beloved, having securely demonstrated all the aforementioned witnesses of our writing, let us send up thanksgiving to God the Savior of all, glory and honor and power to the Father and to his only-begotten Son and to the Holy Spirit unto the all-encompassing and endless ages of ages.
