9. But Jesus, he says, has this ineffable generation. For from the Mother of the alls, the first tetrad, in the place of a daughter, came forth 2.19 the second tetrad and became an ogdoad, from which came forth a decad. Thus there came to be a decad and an ogdoad. The decad, therefore, coming together with the ogdoad and making it tenfold, brought forth the number of eighty, and making the eighty tenfold again, it generated the number of eight hundred, so that the entire number of the letters, having proceeded from the ogdoad into the decad, is 8 and 80 and 800, which is Jesus. For the name Jesus, according to the number in its letters, is eight hundred eighty-eight. You have clearly also the super-celestial generation of Jesus according to them. Wherefore also the Greek alphabet has eight units and eight tens and eight hundreds, showing the sum of eight hundred eighty-eight, that is, Jesus, who is composed of all the numbers. And for this reason he is called Alpha and Omega, signifying his generation from all things. And again thus: when the first tetrad by progression of number is added up, the number ten appeared. For one and two and three and four, when added together, become ten, which is ι, and they wish this to be Jesus. But also Christ, he says, being of eight letters, signifies the first ogdoad, which, intertwined with the ι, brought forth Jesus. And, he says, he is also called Son Christ, that is, the dodecad; for the name Son is of four letters, and 2.20 Christ is of eight; which when put together showed the magnitude of the dodecad. Before, therefore, he says, the manifest form of this name appeared, that is, Jesus the Son, men existed in much ignorance and error; but when the six-letter name was manifested, which put on flesh, that it might descend to the perception of man, having in itself the six and the twenty-four, then, knowing † him, they ceased from their ignorance, and rose from death to life, the name having become for them a path to the Father of truth. For the Father of the alls had willed to dissolve ignorance and to abolish death. And the dissolution of ignorance was the full knowledge of him. And for this reason the Man was chosen who was dispensed according to his will, according to the image of the power above. 10. For from a tetrad * the Aeons came forth. And in the tetrad were Man and the Church, Word and Life. From these, therefore, he says, powers flowing forth generated the Jesus who appeared on earth, and the angel Gabriel fulfilled the place of the Word, the Holy Spirit that of Life, the power of the Most High that of the Man, and the virgin showed the place of the Church. And thus the man according to the economy is generated by him through Mary, whom the Father of the alls chose, having passed through a womb, through the Word for the full knowledge of him. And when he came to the water, he who ran up on high and completed the twelfth number descended upon him like a dove, in whom is the seed 2.21 of those who were sown with him and descended with him and ascended with him. And he says that the power itself which descended is the seed of the Father, having in itself both the Father and the Son, and the unnameable power of Silence known through them, and all the Aeons. And that this is the Spirit which spoke through the mouth of Jesus, which confessed itself to be the Son of man and manifested the Father; having descended, however, into Jesus and been united with him. And he abolished death, he says, the savior Jesus from the economy, but he made known the Father † Christ. Therefore he says † that Jesus is the name of the man from the economy, but that it was given for the assimilation and formation of the Man who was to descend into him, whom, having contained him, he also possessed
