of the devil, of the antichrist, the promise of the Holy Spirit, the adoption of God, our faith required throughout, the Father and the Son, everywhere; and in short, by characterizing all things, it is proposed to see one and the same complexion of both the Gospel and the Epistle. 7.25.22 «But the Apocalypse is very different from and foreign to these, neither touching nor bordering on any of them, so to speak, not even having a common syllable with them; 7.25.23 but neither does the Epistle have any memory or notion of the Apocalypse—leave aside the Gospel—nor the Apocalypse of the Epistle, while Paul, through his epistles, has given some indication even of his own revelations, which he did not write down separately. 7.25.24 «Moreover, it is also possible to infer from the phrasing the difference of the Gospel and the Epistle from the Apocalypse. 7.25.25 For the former are written not only faultlessly in the Greek language, but also most eloquently in their words, their reasonings, and the syntax of their expression, far indeed from any barbaric phrase or solecism or any kind of vulgarism being found in them; 7.25.26 for he had, as it seems, both gifts of the word, the Lord having granted him both, that of knowledge and that of expression. But that this one saw revelations and received knowledge and prophecy I will not deny; however, I see his dialect and language are not accurately Greek, but he uses barbaric idioms and in some places even commits solecisms; which it is not necessary to point out now. 7.25.27 For let no one think I have said these things in mockery, but only to establish the dissimilarity of these writings». 7.26.1 Besides these, there are extant also several other epistles of Dionysius, such as those against Sabellius to Ammon, bishop of the church in Bernice, and the one to Telesphorus, and the one to Euphranor, and again to Ammon and Euporus; and he also composed four other treatises on the same subject, which he addresses to his namesake Dionysius in Rome. 7.26.2 And we have several more epistles of his besides these, and indeed also lengthy treatises written in the form of an epistle, such as the ones "On Nature", addressed to his "son" Timothy, and the one "On Temptations", which he also dedicated to Euphranor. 7.26.3 In addition to these, writing to Basilides, bishop of the dioceses in the Pentapolis, he says that he has written a commentary on the beginning of Ecclesiastes, and he has left us various epistles addressed to this person. So much for Dionysius; but come now, after the account of these things, let us hand down for posterity to know what our own generation was like. 7.27.1 Xystus having presided over the church of the Romans for eleven years, is succeeded by Dionysius, namesake of the one in Alexandria. At this time, when Demetrianus in Antioch had also departed this life, Paul of Samosata receives the episcopate. 7.27.2 Since this man held low and degraded opinions about Christ, contrary to the teaching of the Church, as if he had become a man of common nature, Dionysius of Alexandria, having been invited to come to the synod, pleading old age and bodily weakness, postponed his attendance, setting forth by letter his opinion on the matter in question; but the rest of the pastors of the churches came together from all different directions, as against a defiler of Christ’s flock, all hastening to Antioch. 7.28.1 Of these, the most distinguished were Firmilian, bishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia; and Gregory and Athenodorus, brothers, pastors of the dioceses in Pontus; and in addition to these, Helenus of the diocese in Tarsus and Nicomas of the one in Iconium; moreover also Hymenæus of the church in Jerusalem, and Theotecnus of the neighboring Caesarea; Maximus besides these, he too presided with distinction over the brethren in Bostra; and one would not fail to find countless others together with presbyters and deacons of the
