to leave us again. But what is wealth at all? A fleeting shadow, a dissolving smoke, a flower of the grass, or rather, even cheaper than a flower. Why then are you proud of grass? Does not wealth also come to robbers, and the effeminate, and prostitutes, and grave-robbers? Does this then puff you up, that you have such partners in your possession? But do you love honor? But nothing is more suited to honor than almsgiving. For those honors of wealth and power are constrained and come with hatred, but these come from the free choice and conscience of those who give honor. Wherefore those who give honor can never cast them out. If men bestow such reverence for almsgiving, and pray for all good things for them, consider how great a recompense, what a reward, they will receive from the man-loving God. Let us therefore seek this wealth, which remains forever, and never runs away; so that both here being great and there becoming glorious, we may obtain the eternal good things, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father be the glory, together with the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen. 59.193 HOMILY 34. So the woman left her water jar, and went away into the city, and said to the people, “Come, see a man who told
me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?” 1. We need much warmth and aroused zeal; for without this it is not possible to obtain the good things promised to us. And showing this Christ says, now, "If anyone does not take up his cross and follow me, he is not worthy of me;" and now, "I came to cast fire on the earth, and what would I, if it were already kindled?" by both of these wishing to set before us the ardent and fiery disciple prepared for every danger. Such a one was this woman also. For she was so kindled by what was said, as to leave her water jar, and the need for which she came, and running into the city, to draw all the people to Jesus. For "Come," she says, "and see a man who told me all that I ever did." Consider her zeal and intelligence. She came to draw water; and when she found the true spring, she henceforth despised the material one, teaching us, even if by a small example, yet still in the hearing of spiritual things to look down on all worldly things, and to make no account of them. For according to her own ability, what the apostles did, this woman has also done in a greater way. For they, when called, left their nets; but she spontaneously, with no one commanding her, leaves her water jar and does the work of an evangelist, winged by joy. And she does not call one or a second, like Andrew and Philip, but having stirred up a whole city and so great a populace, thus she led them to him. And see how intelligently she speaks. For she did not say, "Come, see the Christ," but she too with condescension, with which Christ had also ensnared her, draws the men. For, "Come, see a man," she says, "who told me all that I ever did." And she was not ashamed to say, "He told me all that I ever did." And yet it was possible to speak otherwise: "Come, see one who prophesies;" but when a soul is set on fire by the divine fire, it no longer looks to any of the things on earth, not to glory, not to shame, but is of one thing only, the flame which possesses it. "Can this be the Christ?" See again the great wisdom of the woman. She neither declared it clearly, nor was she silent. For she wished not to introduce them from her own declaration, but from hearing him to make them partners of this vote; which made her word more readily received. And yet he did not announce her whole life, but
